Wow! I mean , congratulations Dan! You really are taking gender-non-conformity to the extreme.

Total respect. I mean, c-section, obviously, no?

And is your partner supportive? How exciting. For her to become a dad, that's just ... amazing!

What?

Oh. Oh, I see.

Sorry. Wrong end of the stick.

He isn't pregnant ; she is.

Although , at a stretch , one might say ' they' are expecting a baby.

Well yes: he is still “expecting” his first child to be born isn’t he…. It doesn’t say he is pregnant.
Think people are reading too much into this tbh.

raspberrywine · 26/03/2023 08:29

Why are posters saying "pick your battles"? I think OP was making fun, being amusing. Not taking things seriously. Hardly a battle.

Nobody posts lightheartedly on the Feminism board. It's used for serious discussion or the naughty corner as MNHQ sees fit

He clearly knows what a woman is when he wants to procreate.

Yep,they always do.

OhVicIveFallen · 26/03/2023 08:37

Aww, you got my hopes up. I thought he'd made a public apology to jkr admitting he shouldn't be speaking for women. What an odious little twerp he is.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 26/03/2023 08:39

I find that news report jarring. It takes two people to make a baby, one male, one female. I would find it less jarring if it was a headline about a pregnant woman as it's not uncommon for a pregnant woman not to reveal who the father is, but in the case of a man, he is only expecting because a woman is pregnant, and she has simply been erased from this headline. Why not write 'Daniel Radcliffe and partner expecting ...'? It just feels like part of a pattern of minimising what an enormous thing it is for a woman to go through pregnancy and childbirth. This casual taking of women's reproductive labour for granted is what's made it possible for surrogacy to be accepted in some countries and circles.

It's probably just a thoughtless bit of wording but it's telling that it can happen.

midsomermurderess · 26/03/2023 08:45

‘Amusing’. Others will be the judge of that. We do t need your point explaining, it’s just a bit of desperate shoehorning.

MidsomerMurmurs · 26/03/2023 08:46

BertieBotts · 26/03/2023 07:36

Surely expecting doesn't mean pregnant and has always been used this way?

Er things must have changed pretty recently then! Of course “expecting” means pregnant - in an old-fashioned, 1950s, Call The Midwife, jolly hockeysticks vibe.

Picture an early 1960s docker addressing a nun:
“My wife’s expecting, sister”
”My wife’s in the family way” etc.

For a man to say “I’m expecting” in this particular context is just cringe. (And obviously it’s a different usage from “I’m expecting the number 3 bus to turn up in a minute”).

But times change, and I have heard couples (the male partner speaking) saying “we’re pregnant”. Again: cringe.

Ive never seen a lighthearted post or fun post on this bit of the board, mostly very intensely angry (for obvious reasons).

I agree he is expecting a child, he is expecting to be a dad. Bad choice of picking on someone.

Coxspurplepippin · 26/03/2023 09:12

Sometimes there are wonderfully humourous threads/posts on this board, but I think it's often a case of 'you have to laugh or else you'd cry'.

That's true. I shouldn't have said nobody posts here lightheartedly because that's untrue - but this thread isn't one of those.

sukiwh · 26/03/2023 09:31

This thread is just pathetic. Find something worth bitching about. This isn’t it.

Why do we need to make fun of someone's very happy news because they've said something we don't agree with in the past?

I think this thread is in poor taste, sorry.

Rightsraptor · 26/03/2023 09:37

In that case, I am also 'expecting' even though I won't see 60 again.

Daniel R has announced that his partner is pregnant. I expect it will be a baby: it pretty much always is. Ergo - I'm expecting baby.

But I had expected him to use a surrogate.

Prescottdanni123 · 26/03/2023 09:42

It is not Daniel Radcliffe's fault that the newspaper didn't include his partner's name in the headline as well.

SBHon · 26/03/2023 09:48

The press are hardly going to write about someone who isn’t famous, they’ve focussed solely on him because he’s famous. There’s no hidden agenda.

BellePeppa · 26/03/2023 09:53

He is expecting a child as I don’t see that as particularly gender specific but I get the rage when men or even couples say ‘we are pregnant’. For heaven’s sake pregnant women there’s no need to take that exclusively female experience and turn it into a male one. Would a woman ever say We are having a vasectomy? Congrats to him but he’s going to get a shock when he finds out his baby is going to have a biological sex when it’s born (and no Daniel it won’t be ‘assigned’ it’ll be a biological fact). I’ve gone right off him nowadays and he’s firmly joined Emma Watson in the annoying gender-twattery pile. Rupert seems ok though and was a far better actor out of the three of them.

Autienotnautie · 26/03/2023 09:53

You understand he would not have created the headline (and likely doesn't know it exists) I know little about Radcliffe beyond potter so have no idea if his wife/partner is famous or not. But I assume he is more well known. Obviously it could have read Daniel Radcliffe's partner is expecting a baby. But that's on the editor surely?

It’s an attention grabbing headline. Daniel Radcliffe’s partner isn’t famous, hence no mention in the headline. If it were Emma Watson, the headline would be the same - nobody is really interested in her partner, only her. If it were Jay-Z and Beyoncé, the headline would be different, as they are equally famous.

Happysalley · 26/03/2023 10:19

Well, he is 'expecting' his partner to present him with a fully formed baby in 9 months. Let's hope the pregnancy isn't too hard on him and he has lots of support during this difficult time.

Hmmmm the Spartacus threads say different.

We are very well known for our humour in the face of stupidity. See most threads longer than about 4 pages, we always descend into frivolity and food memes.

Pretty good cheese one recently, it had all the puns, all the cheese and tunnocks tea cakes. Cant get much funnier in fact.

Fairislefandango · 26/03/2023 10:32

I'm as terfy as they come but the headline is correct. Pregnant is a biological state, expecting is a mental one. He IS expecting a baby. I'm expecting to go to a farm in an hour...

^This. I'm expecting dd home shortly.

GoodChat · 26/03/2023 10:33

I acknowledged my error on a later post @Ourladycheesusedatum Smile

Congratulations! 🎉
