Ana Kasparian is the cohost of the Young Turks YouTube channel. Full on TWAW and very Owen Jones/Bernie Saunders. I watch the channel occasionally and she has been leading the lambasting of JK Rowling for ... whatever it is JKR is supposed to have done.

Anyhoo, she tweeted today an objection to the whole cervix Havers, menstruators thing. You will never guess how people responded. Actually, you will guess. But let's see if she backs down.

@CryptoFascistMadameCholet thank you, that gave me a proper laugh. I've been catching up on the threads and feeling a bit tearful.

Just look at the unique circumstances of the last decade growing up into teen trans angst...the wiring in to kid's brains of social media, just no precedent even two decades ago...the viralness of any fad going, whether trans/NB, now tics and tremors...the herd mentality and purity spiral nature of today's online culture...populism and identity politics to a degree unheard of even at the start of 2010s...the death of kinship to bands, sports teams etc, so many kids just don't identify with music or sport the same way we did in the past, it's now the social attitudes of Sam Smith, Harry Styles or the TRA Harry Potter cast that matter...the replacement of the maudlin but non demanding goths with the 2023 version except this group are way more demanding...a couple of decades of Helicopter Parenting, never saying No leading to this generation of highly strung kids with no boundaries and huge demands...and society as a whole that has forgotten how to say no, to support kids by both putting an arm around them at same time showing them boundaries, no more Tough Love in 2023.
Nope it's not going to be the adults that sort the crisis they've helped create, but the new teens growing up, and maybe even older teens naturally getting bored and de-transitioning in greater and greater numbers.
Leaving an isolated group of recent graduates who will struggle in the real world.

There are strong rumours that what will kill this movement are Gen Alpha. Ie under-14 year olds.

I’m seeing this in my family - 11 year old DD says increasingly amusing/profound things. Yesterday it was

DD: ‘Mum, can I ask you a question about nonbinary people?’

Me: (wonders if she thinks I’m a fascistic science-denier based on something she’s second hand learned from a school friend’s TikTok) ‘Sure, go ahead’

DD: ‘They haven’t actually come up with a
way to exist outside of the sex binary, have they? They are still all male or female, they just made up a different thing and called it nonbinary… and that just made a new binary… nonbinary people and binary people… Isn’t that a bit of a silly and pointless thing to do, when girls can have short hair anyway?’

Me: (expels coffee from nose): ‘Yep’.

(exit DD stage left carrying bucket of crewcut sporting Barbie Dolls)

Your dd sounds fantastic

I can't help thinking that much of it was also children let loose on the Internet before the dangers of misinformation was as widely known or considered. My 12yo DS has grown up being told both by me and by school to treat social media with caution. This younger generation has grown up being told from multiple sources that content online isn't always trustworthy.
They're a lot more cynical and internet-savvy in their tweens than those even a few years older were at their age.

This is a MUST WATCH.

Thank you - this is such a good listen.

HorribleNecktie · 04/07/2023 14:00

Christ it’s over 2 hours long, can someone give us the highlights?

nauticant · 04/07/2023 17:14

Ana Kasparian used to be one of the outriders of progressive thinking. However, as time has gone on she's felt greater pressure to accept narratives that, as a matter of faith, have to be accepted by progressives. Even if they're untrue. Where often the untruth is to push stories while deliberately omitting facts that are inconvenient to the acceptable narratives. Having had this awareness she's now seeing how awful the (particularly online) progressive world can be to those who ask questions that disrupt the narratives. As such, she's now being targeted but instead of this making her recant, she's making a stand in talking about how she actually sees things. Not in terms of what her tribe considers to be acceptable.

She's still committed to criticising the "opposing side" if they're being equally partisan/manipulative/authoritarian.

I've not watched it all. What I did watch I found to be fascinating. You can get the sense of it in the first 15 minutes.

The terfiest bit is around 22 mins.

Thanks for this, really useful.

I highly recommend to anyone else short on time listening for a bit from 22 mins.

How refreshing to hear somebody admit and own past mistakes and commit to truth and (genuine) education going forwards. I have a lot of respect for AK for doing this.

MrGHardy · 05/07/2023 23:13

The reddit echo chamber is going nuts about this too, quite hilarious.

RocketPanda · 05/07/2023 23:56

I have to give her a lot of respect to admit she was wrong about some things especially in this day and age where women are being hounded out of the public eye for daring to question anything.

lechiffre55 · 06/07/2023 08:40

Yep I respect her for this. It takes effort and bravery, especially in that community, to take a step back and re-eveluate. I can only imagine how much abuse she's getting for breaking from the herd. I hope she finds a broader more balanced audience to support her and it becomes an overall positive experience for her.

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 06/07/2023 09:40

I was genuinely amazed when I first heard it - I have Sitch and Adam on my Spotify play list so when the episode began I assumed they had someone on pretending to be Ana as satirical commentary.

I user to watch the Young Turks and stopped a few years back due their Trump derangement syndrome (I dislike Trump too but he’s just a rich incompetent asshole, he’s not Lucifer) but I will start listening to Ana’s show again now that she’s back on earth.

I haven't fully caught up on this yet but for some reason reddit recommended a thread in r'vaush to me where a transwoman who used to host TYT reacts to Ana's turn to evil. I was interested in learning that Ana is actually only saying this because she is being paid to do so by Russia!!!!!

Mercymymercyme · 06/07/2023 15:51

I’ve never heard of Ana before, but that tweet just tells me she had not one idea what gender ideology is about.

Because it’s utterly unconcerned about the impact on women of its ideology. They just don’t care if you feel dehumanized or degraded, Ana. You only exist as an ally. Not as a woman with dignity or worth in your own right.

And if you are not an ally, you deserve to be deliberately ( not as collateral damage, but deliberately) dehumanized and destroyed.

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 06/07/2023 16:03

The male trans person who has now stormed out of TYT in a snit hasn’t even bothered to update (pronoun) name on YouTube.

Is deadnaming yourself a thing?
