Thoughts on Calvin Robinson?

Long time lurker, stepping out the darkness to ask this.

Was asked today by a friend who knows I'm GC what my thoughts are on Calvin Robinson. Apparently he's becoming a face of GC views?!

I was shocked. He is anti abortion (in all cases), doesn't think same sex marriage should be legal, and isn't a feminist in any sense of the word.

I'm genuinely concerned that our movement is being picked up by people like him, who couldn't care less about women. When he says biological sex is real, he couldn't give a damn about how that leads to discrimination/violence. It made my blood boil and I want to know what other people think.

Wow he gets a lot of hatred! I'm surprised. Is it because he's black

No, it's because he's a prick. See also Laurence Fox.

Shelefttheweb · 16/03/2023 09:05

Having had him bought to m attention, I watched a video of an address he did about racism - or rather critical race theory which he says CoE have embraced. His problem with it was CRT makes white people to be ‘sinners’ by virtue of their skin colour/ancestral sin and that ‘sin’ can never be absolved. This goes directly against the Bible’s teaching that Jesus can forgive all sin.

beastlyslumber · 16/03/2023 09:06

@CryptoFascistMadameCholet I love Glen Loury's voice! I've heard him speak about being a black conservative and how people just can't compute. It's so incredibly racist (and it's always from the people who claim to be anti-racist).

Why is he a prick? Because he has opinions and beliefs you disagree with? I find that kind of intolerance and bigotry quite childish, if I'm honest.

Unless you can back up your assertion that he's a prick because of something he's actually done?

Signalbox · 16/03/2023 09:15

I strongly suspect his story about why the church wouldn't ordain him isn't the whole truth.

Why’s that?

Nice strawman.

As I said before, he is a poundshop Katie Hopkins, spouting whatever crap which will get him a platform. The only thing he's really interested in is Calvin Robinson.

Wow he gets a lot of hatred! I'm surprised. Is it because he's black - but not saying what black people are "supposed" to say about social issues? Black conservatives do get a lot of hatred, don't they?

I think he comes across as a person who wants the limelight. As far as I can see he's a pretty standard conservative evangelical in his beliefs, so his basic sense of how people should try to behave is quite different than mainstream secular society.

Black conservatives do get a lot of shit though not nearly so much in the UK as the US. I am sure there is some of that though I don't really see that kind of thing on this board.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 16/03/2023 09:20

So the OP is ‘stepping out of the darkness’.

Well , I believe that.

beastlyslumber · 16/03/2023 09:21

?? How is it a strawman, @noblegiraffe ? You are claiming he's a prick based on nothing but the fact that you disagree with his opinions.

At least with Katie Hopkins you could point to where she's been personally abusive towards others. Whereas CR is a religious conservative who says the sorts of things a religious conservative would but as far as I know isn't abusive or criminal.

So it's actually you who's behaving like a "poundshop Katie Hopkins" here, name calling and frothing over someone having opinions you don't like.

noblegiraffe · 16/03/2023 09:22

he's a pretty standard conservative evangelical in his beliefs

Except when he was pretty standard Brexit Party candidate, then in the pandemic he was pretty standard anti lockdown ivermectin peddler.

noblegiraffe · 16/03/2023 09:23

No, that's your strawman again.

I think he's a prick because I've seen his behaviour over the years and how he jumps on any right wing bandwagon in the interests of self-promotion.

As I said, I first heard him talk as a teacher at a teaching conference. He's worn several different hats since then.

They seem like opinions that can all work together. You can be a brexiteer and a religious person at the same time. Is he only supposed to have one opinion that he's allowed to talk about?

donquixotedelamancha · 16/03/2023 09:25

How can someone who isn't a feminist be the face of Gender Critical FEMINISM?

Also, surely Calvin Robinson isn't famous enough to be the face of anything?

I think your 'friend' is pulling your leg.

So being pro Brexit and anti lockdown makes a person a prick?

beastlyslumber · 16/03/2023 09:27

Ah so you think he's a prick because he wants to be in the limelight. So you think every radio host/TV presenter/writer/podcaster is a prick. Because wanting to have a public platform is what makes a person a prick. Why though? I mean, lots of people do want a public platform. What's intrinsically wrong with that?

noblegiraffe · 16/03/2023 09:27

Signalbox · 16/03/2023 09:25

Peddling ivermectin certainly does.

However, I thought he was prick when he was a teacher, which was certainly an opinion shared by many who listened to his talk that day.

beastlyslumber · 16/03/2023 09:33

Sorry @noblegiraffe but it sounds like personal prejudice to me. He hasn't done you any harm, you just don't agree with his opinions and for some reason you disapprove of him seeking a public platform. But there's no substance to your claim that he's a bad person. It looks like bigotry and intolerance to me.

Why can't you accept him having different views to you? You say it's not because he's black. Is it his religion then? Or you just really can't tolerate different opinions in anyone? (In any case, I really hope you weren't at that teaching conference as a teacher.)

noblegiraffe · 16/03/2023 09:38

Yes, it is indeed 'personal prejudice' not to like pompous grifters spouting whatever right-wing garbage will get them on GB News that day. 😂 I guess that is my burden and something that I'll have to work on.

I don’t disagree that CR has a pompous, prickish air about him* but neither Brexit nor anti lockdown are exclusively right wing positions, I know loads of Lexiteers (aka the Tony Benn position, very common in the NW) and left wing libertarians who were troubled by the government’s ridiculous restrictions liberty (eg the police fines for ‘an illegal picnic’).

*Most vicars and priests I’ve come across have a similar prickish air, tbf.

donquixotedelamancha · 16/03/2023 09:49

Prejudice means to pre-judge someone based on (for example) characteristics rather than words. PP has explicitly explained what words and actions cause her to dislike CR- that's not prejudice by definition.

I don't know him at all but a quick google showed he was indeed promoting Invermectin as a treatment for Covid despite having no medical training and despite clear medical advice against it. That alone makes me think he's an idiot at best.

noblegiraffe · 16/03/2023 09:50

He stood as a Brexit Party candidate. I don't think they could be described as 'left wing'.

NotHavingIt · 16/03/2023 09:56

Who is Calvin Robinson and how might we have heard of him?

ScholesPanda · 16/03/2023 09:57

He's a crank (a term not used enough given the absolute explosion in their number), but not a leader of anything.

wincarwoo · 16/03/2023 09:58

He's against same sex marriage and sex before marriage. In that respect he would like to impose restrictions on other people's lives.

The only 'movement' I see myself being part of is the the one to push back against Queer Theory ( and Gender Identity theory) in all its forms; especially when it infringes on the integrity and the boundaries of women and children.
