Thoughts on Calvin Robinson?

Long time lurker, stepping out the darkness to ask this.

Was asked today by a friend who knows I'm GC what my thoughts are on Calvin Robinson. Apparently he's becoming a face of GC views?!

I was shocked. He is anti abortion (in all cases), doesn't think same sex marriage should be legal, and isn't a feminist in any sense of the word.

I'm genuinely concerned that our movement is being picked up by people like him, who couldn't care less about women. When he says biological sex is real, he couldn't give a damn about how that leads to discrimination/violence. It made my blood boil and I want to know what other people think.

Sorry Signalbox - this just made me laugh.

Helleofabore · 15/03/2023 22:26

really? Posting something about the Pope saying that gender ideology being harmful was delete worthy?

Or was it me saying the Pope wasn’t a feminist?

twitter.com/objectuk/status/1635705409578074122?s=46&t=HTxp6zC_d4GZ2FFv4a-YeQ

was I too sarcastic?

MalagaNights · 15/03/2023 22:38

@Helleofabore I could not figure out what you'd said that would result in a deletion either!

Maybe the Pope is on here and he's offended because he is a huge feminist.

Helleofabore · 15/03/2023 22:45

I doubt the Pope believes he is a feminist. Maybe it was Calvin who was upset that he was lower in the hierarchy…

Oh… maybe Joanne Rowling was unhappy about being bumped down the hierarchy… or did I say that she was higher than the Pope and the Pope was unhappy with that???

I don’t know.

Actually there was a meeting of the GC (it was a big room) and we all voted Calvin to be our 'face'. Did you not get the outlook invitation?

Are you sure that meeting was quorate?

Who counted the ballots?

I realise I was absent so can’t really complain (no baby sitter!) about the outcome but surely Calvin wasn’t the only candidate standing at The Big Terf Meeting 2023?

DemiColon · 15/03/2023 23:06

BordoisAgain · 15/03/2023 19:20

How so?

The main reason they refused to ordain him was that he said he didn't believe in systemic racism. They sent him to seminary to study with no intention that he be allowed to be ordained in the end, they seem to have been afraid to just tell him know, and once it was clear that his work was fine, tried to make sure he didn't get through behind the scenes. He describes having a conversation with the (white) bishop where she patted him on the knee and said, "But Calvin, I can assure you that it does exist."

They can't engage with any of the identity politics stuff in a meaningful way and are too scared to look like baddies even if they could.

SirCharlesRainier · 15/03/2023 23:15

I think he's an absolute prick, with whom I am in agreement on a specific matter (sex being real and immutable) - a matter which happens to be as indisputable as whether the sky is blue.

It's likely that plenty of absolute pricks also believe the sky is blue. I'm not gonna start believing it's orange in response.

I stood as well (my husband agreed to babysit our children so I could attend) but it was felt that as Calvin was a man he would command more authority as the face of feminism. I couldn’t really argue against that so stood aside. Also, as many women have found (especially if they have to address court), his deep voice commanded more respect too.

It looks as though "long time lurker" @meatbasedbreakfast has stepped back into the darkness. How unexpected...!

Big weird to assume Calvin Robinson is the Chief Terf of Terf Island rather than someone who objects to Gender Ideology and Drag Queen event for minors on the basis of his conservative Christianity.

You’d think the dog collar and cassock outfits would make it pretty obvious?

Especially as we all know the chief Terf of Terf island Is datun, unless she got cheesed off with the position.

How could he possibly be the face of anything when most people have no idea who he is? He is a fake priest cosplaying a version of traditionalism. No one takes him seriously. I’m surprised you take such thoughts on board, why would you be looking to a man as a figurehead of gender critical thinkers? Women have been crying in the wilderness about this for years. I also find it deeply concerning you require ideological purity to judge someone worthy of being in the gender critical gang. People can be pro life and gender critical, there’s no contradiction. Likewise with gay marriage. You don’t have to share the views of one dull man to be gender critical. I doubt if you are a genuine poster at all.

I think the issue is more that Twitter TRA know the game's up and that this is about the only argument they've got left.

Yes.

twitterexile · 16/03/2023 07:16

Also that the use of 'right wing' is a slur which can be 'weaponised'. Being right wing is normal, mainstream and legal

So much this. I hold some pretty right wing views, some pretty left wing views and plenty of views in the middle. So many people think that saying something is 'right wing' kills the argument and makes them right....not so.

Signalbox · 16/03/2023 07:44

He is a fake priest

Why fake?

beastlyslumber · 16/03/2023 07:52

He's an ordained CofE priest I believe. He seems like a decent person to me, someone who follows the principals of his faith. I don't share his religion but I don't understand all the hate for him. Rather him than some tube who says God got biology all wrong.

beastlyslumber · 16/03/2023 07:53

I think the Cof E wouldn’t have him because he doesn’t believe in systemic racism. He might have changed his position on that after that experience.

I think he’s a deacon of the Free Church.

beastlyslumber · 16/03/2023 08:06

Ah okay. I remember listening to a podcast with him when he was doing his training, so assumed he'd gone on to be ordained. Good on him causing a headache for the CofE!

noblegiraffe · 16/03/2023 08:26

He's a grifter who jumps on whatever right wing bandwagon is going to try to raise his profile. A poundshop Katie Hopkins.

During covid he was making videos of himself hugging Laurence Fox and wittering on about ivermectin. Before that he was trying to get himself elected as a candidate for the Brexit Party.

I first became aware of him as he gave a talk at a teaching conference about how tough it was being a Tory teacher. No mate, your colleagues have a problem with you because you're a prick.

I strongly suspect his story about why the church wouldn't ordain him isn't the whole truth.

Of course it was quorate. If there's any one thing The GC are best at, it's reading the legal fine print.

Anyway, our 'chief' Calvin Robinson is an avid collector of Talking Points That Will Get Me on GB News. If the liberal/leftwing academy view was that sex is binary, he would be arguing the opposite. I wouldn't think he is sincere on anything. He has all the leadership skills and intellectual gravitas of a Greggs serviette.

beastlyslumber · 16/03/2023 08:48

Wow he gets a lot of hatred! I'm surprised. Is it because he's black - but not saying what black people are "supposed" to say about social issues? Black conservatives do get a lot of hatred, don't they?

Plus, he does have spectacular hair.

They really do!

I was listening to the most recent episode of the Glenn Loury Show the other day and he was saying that there was a point in his life where he tried his best to discard his (American, small c, not Tory) conservative views and embrace the Democratic Party because it was that or be ostracised by his entire family.

Looking forward to his autobiography, which he said is now with his publishers. I hope he does an audio book because I would love to hear it in his voice.
