Men taking over IWD? #imyourally

Shamdyhandy · 07/03/2023 17:25

For IWD tomorrow there’s a campaign for men to ‘take over’ social media and show how they’re allies to women. Their mission states ‘we’re taking over social media to hear from the young men of today about the women that inspire them.’

imyourally.org.uk

Am I the only one who thinks this should not be another space for men to take over and assert their viewpoint?

There’s loads of posts already on LinkedIn…and they’re full of people praising the men for how great they are to do this…..is this what IWD is about now? Men?

Tell them to STFU.

Shamdyhandy · 07/03/2023 17:52

I would do but might damage my professional standing!

This is always the problem.

RoseslnTheHospital · 07/03/2023 17:56

There is no need for men to "take over" social media, it is already dominated by them. Using their leverage on one day a year is a piss poor effort imo, and no man should be praised for it. Maybe try amplifying women for 365 days, just a crazy thought.

AnneWhittle · 07/03/2023 17:59

obviously we need an International Women's Allies Day

Whatsnewpussyhat · 07/03/2023 17:59

Ridiculous.

It's bad enough IWD gets co opted by men who claim to be women. Now women must pander to and profusely thank men who take over and talk over them.

Why cant they have just allowed actual women's voices to be heard.
Just one fucking day and they take that too.

HiccupHorrendousHaddock · 07/03/2023 17:59

Blokes, stand the fuck down. We get one day focussing on women. You get most of society. Be an ally every other day by all means; March 8th is for us.

Yes! They could have done that today, and announced that they're only going to like tweets tomorrow but otherwise stay quiet.

IF they need to announce something. Which clearly they do.

pepperminttaste · 07/03/2023 18:07

It's like they can't help themselves. Remember a few years ago for IWD the PSNI got female police officers to nominate male colleagues who supported them during their career so they could be awarded a certificate?

Women can't have just one day.

nilsmousehammer · 07/03/2023 18:16

Rule of misogyny. If it's not relevant or useful to men then it's worthless.

Boiledbeetle · 07/03/2023 18:16

Soo...totally missing the fucking point and making a day about women all about the men.

Shocked! I'm shocked!

jlpartnerrs · 07/03/2023 18:17

<facepalm>

AncientBallerina · 07/03/2023 18:26

A few years ago the company I work for had one speaker - a man - on IWD. I’ve mostly ignored it since then. The last thing I need is anymore mansplaining. This year though there is a panel - 3/4 women and one man. But what is interesting is that while it’s headed as International Women’s Day the subheading and throughout the blurb, women are referred to as females. It reads so weirdly. No one actually calls women females do they? As in you might say, female loos or female changing rooms, but you’d never say ‘I went out last night with some females from work’. Is this another attempt to mess with the language around women?
Sorry/ slight derail!

Clymene · 07/03/2023 18:27

Oh piss off

Shamdyhandy · 07/03/2023 18:31

@Clymene me? Or the men?

OP posts:
ApocalipstickNow · 07/03/2023 18:33

Aw that’s lovely. There’s so few men’s voices on the internet after all. Be nice for them to get a chance to speak.

(heavy sarcasm)

Merlott · 07/03/2023 18:39

Imagine if all men just stopped posting for 1 day instead!

Clymene · 07/03/2023 18:43

Shamdyhandy · 07/03/2023 18:31

@Clymene me? Or the men?

The men of course'

Take over the internet? How about they shut up for once in their lives.

BoredOfThisMansWorld · 07/03/2023 18:47

JFC

This is one of the most tone deaf things I've read.

PermanentTemporary · 07/03/2023 18:48

'There was no brief, no budget and no client'

And precious little thought

Kind of shows they're a clueless bunch playing at PR or whatever it is they do. Reputation fail.

Roundaboot · 07/03/2023 18:51

My company has organised lots of events/talks for IWD. There are two organised for "how to be better allies" which have been labelled "men only".

Take a guess how many of other events are for women only?

Can men just not shut up for one bloody day?

nilsmousehammer · 07/03/2023 19:02

I am beginning to loathe March 8th. In fact it's triggering me, and I demand a safe space, and that everyone indulge me in my strongly felt inner feeling that IWD doesn't exist and anyone who says it does is a bigot.

Delphinium20 · 07/03/2023 19:08

JFC. Just performative bullshit from men who won't pay us and can't be bothered to share in domestic duties.

Loveacuppa · 07/03/2023 19:14

At first glance I read the title # as "imorrally".

Which seems apt.

pastaandpesto · 07/03/2023 19:14

Performative wankshittery.

With every year that passes, I am becoming increasingly convinced of the direct inverse correlation between how loudly people / companies profess their values, and the degree to which those values actually govern their actions.

I'm lucky to work with some excellent men who have a very strong moral compass and who are quietly but relentlessly supportive of their female colleagues. I cannot imagine any circumstances in which any one of them would draw attention to this publicly.
