International women's day

I know this has happened before, but I am really sick of it all. There are so many Pride events, why can't women have International Women's Day?

Fuck this shit. UCD has gone too far, this has to be out and out trolling. For those who are not Irish, UCD is one of the biggest universities, with a worldwide reputation in science and medical fields not a tiny backwater arts college. The only alumni event listed for IWD is the Lydia Foy talk...so a biological male and a male barrister speaking for IWD.
Although I already knew they were captured...a few years ago I was looking at a HCP colleagues research proposal (in healthcare) and asked why he'd used gender not sex. He was told the UCD ethics board wouldn't approve his research proposal if he used sex!

International women's day

I am now afraid to read anything on the IWD, because of all the disrespect women are getting in some places. I am interested in how sex-based appropriation keeps women and girls down and how despite that there are women doing incredible things, and perhaps things might be getting better?

I am not interested in yet another trans day as the yearly calendar is already full of them.

Never mind International Women’s Day; I now want International Women’s Island. A nation run for women, by women.

nilsmousehammer · 02/03/2023 18:45

I'm also now allergic to it.

Call it international male people with women identities day and be done with it, the whole day now is just about thumping women over the head with the information that the best and most important kind of woman is a male one. Who's opted into the selected best bits with male privilege lifejacket securely attached.

Not building good will in any way.

ReunitedThorns · 02/03/2023 18:55

It's to be expected, but remember that it is International Day of Transgender Remembrance also in March, we've just had LGBT+ History Month in February, Pride Month is July, plus a whole load of other trans days too.

It's like the BBC's list of 98 Women plus a couple token trans women.

Who are they remembering?

The number of trans homicide victims in the UK is less than one per year.

International is more than the UK though.

IWD has been shit for years, with men moaning there isn't an imd.

It's a similar story all over the world though. Even the people who run the TDOR website could only come up with 375 trans deaths globally in 2021, and they had to plump the figures up by including a few suicides.

Of the homicide victims, some were murdered by other trans people, quite a few were murdered for reasons completely unrelated to being trans, and a sizeable number were Brazilian prostitutes. I'm not saying Brazilian prostitutes deserve to be murdered, but it is probably one of the most dangerous occupations imaginable, and it's not clear that transgender Brazilian prostitutes are any more likely to be murdered than other Brazilian prostitutes, which is the appropriate comparator.

International Men's Day is on November 19th, by the way.

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 02/03/2023 19:20

Oh yes the figures are totally inflated/ no way of knowing if they were killed for being trans or not.

And yes, I know there's an IMD. Weirdly the men who are so bothered about it didn't/don't.

For what it’s worth (not very much tbh) I don’t want an IMD.

Re Fae Johnstone, do companies not do any kind of checks on the person they are choosing to represent them? I mean it's a man, we all know that, but that aside, why choose such a nasty one?

Yes, this is what Fae thinks of women with different opinions to Fae

You've already pointed it out and here's the proof. I only found out last year, when my wife told me.

internationalmensday.com/

For some reason, I'd lived for 51 years without knowing about it, or even caring, or feeling left out.

AnybodyAnywhere · 02/03/2023 20:35

I wonder how many trans men and their supporters will be demanding that men are de platformed from speaking to other men about their history and their rights?

How many trans men will we see advertising products aimed at men?

AnybodyAnywhere · 02/03/2023 20:36

On International Mens Day (I meant to put! 🙄

Brefugee · 02/03/2023 20:47

For some reason, I'd lived for 51 years without knowing about it, or even caring, or feeling left out.

i used to belong to a feminist group and on IWD we'd tweet resources and info and so on relating to women. often resources for women fleeing DV and so on. And so of course we got the "wah wah when is IMD" and "wah wah nobody organises anything for men"

So one year we bookmarked them all, and on 19th November tweeted them saiyng "YES! it's your day! what are you doing?" cue abuse
and the kicker? we spent IMD tweeting resources about men's mental health and so on. And most of the supportive comments and retweets came from... women.

Check out Richard Herring.

nilsmousehammer · 03/03/2023 06:55

The whole 'day for this' and 'day for that' thing is nothing but a pita of silly gestures anyway, and anything women-focused invariably provokes a fuck ton of moaning from men of various identities and for various reasons, but solely because it's women.

Can we just not have this stupid thing at all? Get it out of the diary. It can be just a 'day' and women therefore get it as a day off from the never ending crap.

None.

Because no men a. would stand for it, or b. believe TMAM.

IWD has been a thing since at least 1911 and i, for one, am very happy it exists. All jokes aside about "yes, the other 364 days a year" - in Berlin it is now a Public Holiday and in many eastern European countries it is a day when men acknowledge women's contributions to society, at home, in the workplace etc and it is very jolly and lovely.

My local car parts place does an IWD special and women get 15% off - i usually use that day to get my lights checked/replaced and new windscreen wipers if needed. It is a small nod to us.

You can ignore it if you like, it is no skin off anyone's nose, and joining in or doing anything at all to acknowledge the day is not compulsory.

Brefugee · 03/03/2023 08:33

he stopped doing it a couple of years ago, i think

Gillette had a whole advertising campaign about a trans man learning from their father over how to shave their face.

I've seen a lot of "non-binary" women modelling men's clothing in men's magazines.

And you have Elliot Page too.

So let's try and not pretend that trans men are not featured on stuff aimed at men.

RosaBonheur · 02/03/2023 18:58

I would argue that the transgender community have it had planned for years what they would do if a transgender person was murdered (for whatever reason) in the UK. The day is essentially emotional blackmail.

Currently I believe that 2 women are killed each week, 3 men killed each week, and 1 trangender person killed every 4 years in the UK. So statistically it is safest to be transgender.
