8 years for two rapes??? Is that it? He could be out well before 8 years grrrrr… 😡
Im guessing after all the hoo ha he will be in a male prison - hope he gets a bloody hard time off other inmates.

lechiffre55 · 28/02/2023 11:02

According to these guidelines rape should be 4 – 19 years’ custody. So this means for 2 rapes he's getting two absolute minimum terms, which seems excessivly lenient consider he's got two rapes under his belt already.

DerekFaker · 28/02/2023 11:09

The prosecution said he specifically targetted vulnerable women.

Sorry maybe that link should have a content warning - it goes into some detail about the rapes.

caramac04 · 28/02/2023 11:11

I agree the sentence is very light. I hope the victims are able to challenge it, I’m not sure if they can.
This man is clearly dangerous to women and to think he could be out in four years is wrong imo.
Well if he becomes a prison bitch he might begin to understand what he has out his victims through. Karma eh?

I will be staggered if his legal team don't push the open goal Sturgeon gave them. He was removed from a women's facility for no other reason than he and his case came to light and the public were very loudly unhappy. Other males with equal or worse criminal records were left in situ. The policy was not sorted; he was singled out.

He has no business in a women's prison: no male does. He'd have however every case to claim it was discriminatory treatment for no better reason than a politician wetting themselves. It was.

cosmiccosmos · 28/02/2023 11:45

The whole thing stinks. The judge referred to Bryson as 'she', an insult to women. He'll get out and do it again and again, there is no justice.

SinnerBoy · 28/02/2023 12:04

I didn't realise that he'd been convicted of two previous rapes. Surely that's grounds for his latest victims to appeal, on the grounds that it's unduly lenient?

MoirasSaggyBundles · 28/02/2023 12:06

Watching BBC news. Reporters taking great care not to use gendered language for HIM.

Judge on sentencing guidelines: Judge is taking into account Bryson's own circumstances as a "vulnerable" person, childhood issues, dyslexia and ADHD. But then says that Bryson's vulnerability doesn't excuse what he did. So that has meant his vulnerabilities don't excuse him from a custodial sentence, but he's got the minimum custodial sentence. I think that's what's happened.

I just came to mention the BBC having read the article on their website. Studiously avoiding gender other than when quoting Bryson's ex.

Sorry I mean the Judge is sentencing him for two rapes. I don't mean another two rapes as well as these two. My point is he's got rape as a pattern of behaviour, not a one off. To me this means he's got an established taste for it now, and is more of a danger to women.

LizzieSiddal · 28/02/2023 12:50

Disgracefully short sentence. Just awful.

FusionChefGeoff · 28/02/2023 12:54

The BBC report does actually use one pronoun and it's 'he'!!

"The trial heard that Bryson, from Clydebank, had preyed on vulnerable women who he met online."

Ah, so they did. I must have been distracted by the photo of a beautiful woman just under that sentence.

Great spot! I missed it when I read the article, probably because it just seemed so natural that it didn't stand out.
I wonder if the same happened when it went in i.e. the journalist writing it just didn't over think it.
It will be interesting to look back on this article in a few hours/days and see if it still says "he" at that point. Screenshot added to show current wording...

miawallacesfeet · 28/02/2023 13:14

This is probably why: The judge said reports suggested Bryson had a set of neuro-developmental disorders.

ReunitedThorns · 28/02/2023 13:14

In many respects I'm disappointed that reports refer to him as "he", they should call him "she" and at the bottom of the article have an section stating that due to editorial guidance issued by trans rights groups they must refer to him as "she".

MummBRaaarrrTheEverLeaking · 28/02/2023 13:30

I was watching bbc news when the news broke. Presenter was he/himming a good few times, I couldn't believe my ears! Then they did the pre-recorded bit of the report where they go into the case and showed his photo sans silly wig (which I thought was good too, so people watching can see exactly who we're talking about here).

Anyway, cut back to the presenter to sum up the story again, and this time it was "she" this and "she" that Confused

Boiledbeetle · 28/02/2023 13:54

The appallingly short length of sentence is an insult to the victims.

PaterPower · 28/02/2023 13:57

I understand that MH issues have to be factored in to sentencing decisions, but what exactly is going to change for Bryson, such that he will no longer be a threat to vulnerable women on release in just 4 years time?

It’s too short to be a meaningful punitive sentence for what he subjected his victims to, and also too short to ensure any in-prison counselling (if he gets any) is effective at stopping him reoffending.

MarshaBradyo · 28/02/2023 13:59

I wonder if they used he in court

I agree the sentence seems short

MichaelFabricantWig · 28/02/2023 14:03

Did the judge address him as she? The sentencing remarks are usually directed at the criminal so not in the third person.

sentence seems very lenient. The poor women who were raped by this man

Agree I would perhaps wonder if the difficulties actual make him more of a danger
