I live in Rosie Duffields constituency. Just had local election door knock from labour party

He asked what my main concerns were. I said my main issue was that i stood with Rosie and felt that Labour, as a party, from the top down, did not offer her enough support. And my main concern was womens safe spaces.

Man said, well, this is local elections and not about that, and that issue is more complicated than you think. What are your concerns, locally?

I said the local council is involved in issues to do with womens safe spaces. Like the womens refuges, the womans changing room at the local pool, etc. All spaces where biological men should not have access and that womens safe spaces was my main concern.

There followed a debate. And his stance is that its not that simple, i am being brainwashed by the right wing media, and that Rosie is in fact, (drumroll please...), mainly being supported by American right wing anti abortion groups.

Arrrrrghhhhhh. So that is where my local labour door knockers are at. Saying Rosies main core of support is American right wing anti abortion groups and i am being fooled by them. Silly, foolish, female me.

@Sazzasez and I didn’t “convince” myself. The ICO found in my favour both times. So the ICO convinced me that they breached my data rights :)

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 24/02/2023 08:54

The latest posts from our visitor have very much confirmed my thoughts on the productiveness of engaging with them

SinnerBoy · 24/02/2023 09:10

Interestingly, I can find no evidence of an ICO ruling for either Julian Brazier, nor Rosie Duffiled. Brazier has had a car crash reported and there's an ICO ruling against a company in Leeds, Brazier Consulting Services Ltd, but no mention of a Julian.

SinnerBoy · 24/02/2023 09:12

The director, Edward James Brazier is not the MP.

Yes, I googled that too.

They would be public record, of course.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/02/2023 09:17

So the ICO "found in his favour" twice against two consecutive Canterbury MPs but it's not recorded anywhere? Fascinating.

SinnerBoy · 24/02/2023 09:32

Sazzasez · Today 09:16

They would be public record, of course.

Yes, there seem to be many of them. A kind and generous soul would ascribe it to him making a simple mistake.

TrombonesAreNotBones · 24/02/2023 09:44

It is funny how an over-reach concludes in a topple, isn't it.

Kucinghitam · 24/02/2023 09:53

How very interesting!

Ha ha, love this expression @TrombonesAreNotBones - nicked it for my collection, thanks!

TrombonesAreNotBones · 24/02/2023 12:18

Grin you're welcome!

ijclark · 24/02/2023 12:48

@Ereshkigalangcleg happy to oblige :)

@SinnerBoy @Sazzasez I’m afraid the ICO don’t make these responses to complaints public, no.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/02/2023 12:52

They do when they take it seriously enough to sanction people, I think. But clearly they thought it was a minor slap on the wrist kind of thing.

ijclark · 24/02/2023 12:55

It is recorded and where it happens repeatedly, sanctions are imposed. In terms of the previous MP, several constitutes complained about the same breach, and the local Conservative office was required to undergo data protection training and warned of future breaches. The ICO doesn’t tend to dispense major fines and punishments unless the breach is very significant. Nonetheless, it is a breach of a constituents data protection, which is a serious matter for obvious reasons.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 24/02/2023 20:55

We seem to have gone off topic. The doings of the ICO are fascinating.

PopGoesTheProsecco · 24/02/2023 23:03

Back to the election point of this thread. Rosie Duffield is a brilliant constituency MP. Someone upthread said that her office didn’t respond to emails - that’s 100% not my experience. I would not have an ASC diagnosis for my daughter if it weren’t for her office’s intervention with CAMHS.

ijclark · 25/02/2023 07:04

@PopGoesTheProsecco tbf her office is quite good, but she’s absolutely useless. I know many people in the constituency who have written to her and don’t get a reply. I also know people who have worked in her office and, well, they have a very interesting perspective. From what I understand of how the office operates, it’s highly likely the staff did all the work to get you the support you needed.

Either way, if your MP publicly leaks special category data about you to get at you, that’s not a sign of an ethical or a “brilliant” MP.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 25/02/2023 07:45

My MP replies to every letter and email, always with a bland and predictable letter. He has an awful reputation locally for not doing anything. Obviously too busy signing letters. Thank god he's stepping down before the next election.

TheBiologyStupid · 25/02/2023 12:09

Off-topic, but I'm reminded of an anecdote that the Labour MP Tony Banks used to tell about his experience as a newly elected member in the early '80s. He was assigned an old hand to teach him the ropes and Banks was astonished when his mentor dumped all the correspondence from his constituents in the bin unopened. "But what if it's important?," he protested. "If it's important they'll write again," came the reply. "But how do you know that one of those letters wasn't from someone writing again?" "Look, son," the old MP explained, "the proportion of my constituents who bother to write to me is tiny, the proportion who write again if they don't get a reply is even smaller, and the number of them who are so annoyed that they won't vote for me at the next election is tinier still. I've got a majority of 20,000 so I'll be safely re-elected until I choose to retire".

Banks was Minister for Sport when I heard him talking in the early '90s. He said he hoped that MPs had since become more responsible and accountable, but was making a point about the relative futility of letter writing as a campaign tactic and the need to be more creative to achieve political goals. Of course, behind-the-scenes lobbying that constituents don't have access to is probably the most effective tool for change, which is why we're in the mess that we currently are.

Sazzasez · 25/02/2023 13:33

My MP answered me a couple of times. Both times it was incoherent gibberish - it really gave the impression of feeding a random selection of sentences into a kaleidoscope & churning them round.

It’s a marginal seat & said MP is not standing again.

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 25/02/2023 19:08

I can see you have history with your MP ipclerk. You feel she is out to get you for some reason? My MP has nothing to leak on me... he isn't prone to getting invoked.

FigRollsAlly · 08/03/2023 12:49

Rosie just asked a question at PMQs about the importance of people being able to discuss women’s rights when canvassed on the doorstep for the upcoming local elections. She stresses the importance of canvassers treating people with respect so it sounds like she’s aware of the opposite happening. Sunak said he agreed with her and supported her.
.

LizzieSiddal · 08/03/2023 12:54

I heard her question @FigRollsAlly I wonder why she wasn’t a little more specific as to what has happened to her.

FigRollsAlly · 08/03/2023 13:00

Yes, if I hadn’t read this thread and known all the background from other threads I wouldn’t have understood that this question was anything other than a generalised IWD one. I guess she can’t really stand up and say that labour canvassers in her constituency are behaving so badly.
