eererrrrrr look at history……

Oh come on! We're not mocking Sam 'because he's non-binary and we all hate non-binary people', we're having a laugh because he's just a bog standard man who says funny things. It's not hatred or wanting to discriminate against a particular group. We just don't see him as being quite as special as he thinks he is.

I don’t read it as you mocking Sam Smith. I hear jeering at the use of a gender neutral pronoun that someone who wants to use one is using.

He's an attention seeking bell end, who's trying to force people into using non-existent words, when others exist, quite probably in an attempt to trip innocents up, so he can have a whine and make out he's oppressed. To get attention and sympathy from credulous dolts.

This meme made me Giggle so hard I nearly woke up DP who's having a nap on my bosom.

Menthol Flavour Lozenges, appropriate - he seems a bit menthol.

FuzzyPuffling · 17/02/2023 19:38

I LOVE the "Fisherman's Thems". Perfect. I wonder if they come in "Prize Plum" flavour too?

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 17/02/2023 19:40

absolutely, when sam says ‘jump’ we don’t actually have to

and I probably would use ‘them’ but his themming has led to ‘gender neutral’ brit awards and ive no fucking interest changing perfectly fine words like Angler

Using or denying the use of language dehumanises at worst and this removes moral value for the individual / group. There's a good study on it above.

There seem to me to be different types of comments on this thread

  • I don't like Sam Smith ( fair enough). Just say that
  • I don't like the words Sam Smith chooses to use to feel more inclusive. ( why are you so bothered by the language?)
  • I think the words are ridiculous and will mock those that use them
RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 17/02/2023 19:51

What part of history working?

,,,,, can you not see what you're saying?? Surely ..... I mean, really, reread what you just wrote @Wellies54

WhiteFire · 17/02/2023 19:55

When I read fisherthem, it just reminds me of an old LP my Dad had, it was a Christian folk group from around the 70's called Fisherfolk, it was a long forgotten memory and thanks to SS it has come jolting back.

Oh and fwiw I don't like SS, (sorry). Sam's voice just sends a wave of depression over me.

BCBird · 17/02/2023 19:57

It messed with jy headvthe new terminology. Hope we are not going to have to specify our pronouns or all the pupils at school. Will be frightened to say anything in case I slip.up.

Wellies54 · 17/02/2023 20:07

@workingitoutnow I am saying I don't hate him I just think it's funny that he feels he can't say the word 'man' because he's declared that he isn't a man. I'm all for things being gender neutral where it creates greater equality but I also recognize that everyone has a sex. Not sure what the problem is with that.

I'm much more bothered by the erasure of the word woman, which is happening in literature describing periods, menopause etc. 'people who bleed' has even been used I believe! Infact, what was that article about not using words such as woman, man, son, daughter, male, female etc.? It's much more worrying to erase language that has been used for hundreds of years and has a clear and relevant meaning - to women, for example - than to laugh at a word like 'fisherthem' which was made up 5 minutes ago and has no real meaning.

workingitoutnow · 17/02/2023 19:01

Omg, how absolutely mean are you all??????

ffs, if Sam Smith chooses a pronoun and chooses to use that, so what??

I hate gendered words, they are exclusive and drive a lack of inclusion. I am not a chairman, fireman, policeman - gender neutral words are more inclusive.

i am just wondering whether you realise where such hate of gender neutral pronouns may lead?

Will it lead a horse to water ?

On your first point I think he's a pillock (yes HE )
On your second point he only uses those words to get media attention
On your last point , I think you will find it's called satire !

mach2 · 17/02/2023 20:18

Hah!

mach2 · 17/02/2023 20:19

The "Hah!" is for the Fisherman's Thems.

Between this and a cunt in waders, I can't stop laughing.

TWETMIRF · 17/02/2023 20:36

Mean contains both man and men so extra gendered

Fairislefandango · 17/02/2023 20:37

Oh don't be so silly. Even if they don't buy into pronoun pandering, everyone is perfectly used to people like Sam Smith calling themselves 'they'. That wouldn't have merited a thread. But appending 'them' onto the end of a noun when there are several obvious ways of saying that you go fishing without mentioning what sex you are is just laughably twatty. But no, we're all being so meeeeaan! Hmm

Sam Smith is a rich celebrity. I am not interested in showing him deference because he's rich and famous. No matter whether he expects that deference to take the form of using them at his command, or being called His/Their Imperial Magnificence, or whether he wants me to tug my forelock as he passes.

It's 2023!

When you talk about dehumanising through the use or denial of language, what are your thoughts on females being described as menstruators, or womb havers, or vulva havers, or cervix havers?

You see, those words are used to describe many of us, against our will, and are deeply offensive. It's being forced on us, that's the language we are expected to accept. We are - sometimes literally - policed in our use of language by a tiny number of people.

Sam flaming Smith is part of that movement. So do forgive me if I don't feel particularly inclined to think he's anything other than a self serving prat.

This 👆

smith is an over privileged whining pita whose actions have already negatively impacted women - they can get in the sea

And them / they didn’t make sense before. As chairwoman or chair person didn’t make sense 50 years ago. Times change

No, I'm pretty sure that 'fisherthem' will always sound ridiculous.

I'm genuinely wondering how many actual fishermen identify as non binary.

Very true.
I declare I am being "womean". Stick that up yet non gendered arse, Sam Smith!
