EpicChaos · 16/02/2023 04:08

Earlier, @Fenlandia posted a link to a tweet on the
" Can anyone direct me to a tweet? " thread.
I clicked on to read it - very interesting in itself and worth the time it took to read it.
Anyhoo, after reading, i continued scrolling, as one does and came across a thread by a guy called Jake Crain
It seems that our Lia might not be the little sweetie-pie that we all think he is, colour me shocked! thanks to some digging by that nasty terf Riley Gains. Shameful, i tell thee, shameful!

She even shamefully talks about the situation on Jake Crains youtube channel

Oh dear. Why am I not surprised?

WookeyHole · 16/02/2023 06:06

Good for her for speaking out and great to see it being discussed so openly.

Oh dear. Why am I not surprised?

I am very surprised if castration has actually occurred. The rest, not so much.

Needmoresleep · 16/02/2023 06:12

I doubt the castration as well. The kink....we have seen it before.

BettyFilous · 16/02/2023 06:19

Riley is great. I don’t appreciate her going along with the host to blame “feminists” for Lia in women’s sports. I was surprised at her answer considering Filia gave her a platform to speak last autumn. 😕

BettyFilous · 16/02/2023 06:35

Okay, I watched as far as the pickled balls and the “satanic Grammies”. Fundy Christians in the US are fascinating when they get going on satanic influences. They’re not wrong on women being exposed to dicks in changing rooms but we part ways after that. I didn’t realise Lia had been nominated for woman of the year by Sports Illustrated. Wankers.

puffyisgood · 16/02/2023 07:39

Yeah, I stumbled across the full thread but couldn't get too excited about it. Lea Thomas has no place in women's sport because she's a man, end of story. Beyond that I'm not really sure that it's fair or in the public interest for there to be scrutiny of her predilections or of whatever she gets up to with other consenting adults.

SinnerBoy · 16/02/2023 07:46

They gave him the trophy for photo purposes and posted hers to her. What a bloody travesty.

I was thinking about that, after watching as I also feel uncomfortable with the whole “satanic” thing, but then I started wondering about context. In a country where Christianity lies so heavily, it might also be true that the opposite is also true. I don’t have enough background to know.

Riley Gaines is very brave for speaking out. It is incredible that she is such a lone voice in America talking about such a blatant disregard for women in sport. I do tend to turn off when people start to blame the left - perhaps they haven't looked into the way the transition of young boys, in particular, is so closely linked to homophobia. However, she is right here - there are some feminist organisations who include transwomen as women. And while I have no problem with what consenting adults get up to in private, the sexualised photos of Lia Williams are bizarre- is it normal for high profile athletes to post very sexualised, bondage type images in public and pose with supposed genitals in jars? I don't care if if it's meant to be satanic or not, but it shows an enormous lack of self awareness and understanding of what is appropriate for a public figure to broadcast to the world. I think it needs to be said because the debate is cloaked in such a fluffy, wholesome inclusion and diversity way, but the motivation behind all this is much darker and the embarrassment about speaking of it (don't be so mean and inappropriate ladies!) is one of the ways women are shut up.

Since the loopholes in social norms and or laws were used to gain access to women’s spaces and the loopholes still remain, given that these “predilections” are also being made public (by choice) then I think it may be in the public interest to understand what kind of men are likely to use such loopholes if they are left open.

HaveYouSeenNancy · 16/02/2023 08:34

Riley Gaines is really impressive, I hadn't heard her talk before. How could anyone disagree with her? I hadn't considered the length of time that an elite swimmer takes to put their costume on, but imagine spending 15 minutes naked and twisting around while a naked male stranger is in the same room, just before he cheats you out of your win.

NotBadConsidering · 16/02/2023 08:52

DD15 swims competitively. The race suits are ridiculous. They are super expensive for a start. And they are tiny. I mean, really tiny. When you hold them up to a person’s body it’s hard to fathom how they’ll get into them. They have to be carefully pulled on so as to not tear them or pull the seam apart which is usually some sort of glue. They really squeeze into them. Most girls warm up in their usual swimmers then go and put them on because once you’re in them you can’t go to the toilet. If they need to pee, they usually just go in locked shower cubicle and run the shower.

im actually surprised they make one big enough for Thomas to squeeze a male frame into. Even the biggest women swimmers aren’t as big as him.

It turns my stomach to think of my DD trying to get hers on with a male standing there. I don’t think she would. She would just leave or rather die.

I think Gaines is excellent in her speaking. I think she’s still young and working out other feminist positions. I think she is a victim of indecent exposure by any other name. Any other such occurrence with a male who did not declare a transgender identity would result in arrest.

Boiledbeetle · 16/02/2023 09:01

Hadn't read the comments before I watched. So was rather surprised at the turn the conversation took at 20 minutes in.

Don't think I'll be eating pickled onions for a while, that jar of pickled testicles will keep popping to my mind!

😂😂😂

What is it with picked body parts? The jury is still out on whether IW has a similar display solution for 'her' cervix!

I don't think we're violently disagreeing, you're right I'm sure that this adds a bit of relevant colour to the story, but it's imo always worth remembering that the key test for entry to women's spaces isn't how kind, how noble, how otherwise virtuous you are, it's not what you look like, and it's absolutely not what your sexual preferences are... it's simply that you're a woman, a test which Ms Thomas outright fails.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 16/02/2023 10:21

She spoke well but I think went into too much sordid detail about Thomas' sexual ... proclivities and she didn't make it clear why these were relevant (I hopped out at the start of the castration scene though).

I agree that it's a question of whether someone is a man and it simply should be a case of no men in women's changing rooms or sports, but I find it fascinating the way that once you over-ride the natural boundaries or norms, then all sorts of other boundary violations follow.

No one would have a problem saying 'No' to any other man who wanted to change or swim with women - so why does saying 'I am a transwoman' over-ride this?

If Riley Gaines had posted photos of herself and her husband in their sexy underwear, surrounded by bondage gear, then announced that they were getting sterilised and were pictured with their ovaries and testicles in jars, serious questions would be raised about their mental health and the appropriateness of this behaviour by someone who could be a role model for children. I am sure it would be international news. Lia Thomas does this and it is somehow barely noticed. No one would have a problem saying to any other sports person 'This is not appropriate', so why does saying 'I am a transwoman' over-ride this?

She makes the point that some feminists are supporting transwomen. And this is the case. Many 'third wave' feminists are all in with TWAW and exclude women who will not agree to this - and villify them, too. She also mentions TERFs and calls them 'true liberals', so is saying that not all feminists support TWAWs, only some. I am pretty sure FiLia knows this perfectly well. If we go the way of saying 'no true feminist would support TWAWs' we are on a hiding to nothing, though it is a pity women have to oppose other women on this issue - and utterly ridiculous that any feminist would support men's inclusion in this way; but they do and it is no good hiding from this fact.

I don't think she did exactly. They spoke about how feminists are pushing this and how "unfeminist this is" (true). She said there was a split - some feminists are, others are pushing back against it (I suppose that would include FILIA). That is pretty much what is happening. Also segued their point back into the main thing being that women need equal opportunities to succeed and respect. Which of course is super hard to argue against (rather than a straw woman of an angry rad feminist want women to be masculine which sometimes gets set up).

Definitely no violent disagreement. I agree 100% with your principle that no men, however virtuous, should be in women’s spaces.

I do think it is relevant when trying to convince others that the current trans lobby demand - self-ID - is unworkable. The number of men who are at the forefront of that particular campaign who are later revealed to be sleazy at best, criminal at worst, is eye opening. It is a feature, not a glitch.

Datun · 16/02/2023 18:43

Good for her.

That video will resonate with so many Americans.

Three infuriated jocks, fuming about a girl deprived of her rightful place in swimming and traumatised by some bloke smashing all her boundaries and insisting on watching her disrobe.

It's offensive on so many levels. The unfairness, the misogyny, the voyeurism.

Neither Riley nor those men are coming at this from the point of view of feminism. They just see a whole load of nonsensical shit, fucking women over.

But from what I can see they are all this close to acquiring late onset feminism.

Long may it remain contagious.

Needmoresleep · 17/02/2023 06:13

I assume the reason why Riley Gaines is willing to speak out is because she has a different background to some of the other swimmers. Lia’s Princeton teammates appeared equally upset, and their spidey senses probably told them that he was a creep. However they were told their scholarships and indeed their future careers were at stake.

Such is the division in the States that it appears easier for natural republicans from bible states to speak out. Which in turn becomes a self fulfilling prophesy. It’s not that only Riley is prepared to speak out. It is that only Riley is able to speak out without jeopardising her future. The others almost certainly agree with her, and she will know this.
