Protecting your autistic daughter

I'm an autistic woman and I would've been furious if my parents had effectively censored all communication with me to eradicate any inkling of trans ideology. I don't agree with trans children taking medication until they become adults but I DEFINITELY don't agree with them being lied to by omission.

PauliString · 15/02/2023 18:08

That's interesting, Bagel. Did you in fact have any education on transgender ideology when growing up?

OriginalUsername2 · 15/02/2023 18:10

Clever mum!

ArabellaScott · 15/02/2023 18:10

Interesting!

I was educated under Section 28 so I didn't have any education on anything other than heterosexual relationships. I wish I had had the option.

PicklesAndTequila · 15/02/2023 18:12

Mine isn't trans, but I've lost her to her peers who are in the cult
She is autistic, as is her bf and they are both v high functioning.
I miss her.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 15/02/2023 18:14

Wouldn't have washed with mine.

bagelbagelbagel · 15/02/2023 18:16

It's censorship. Agreeing with censorship is bonkers.

Wouldn't have washed with mine.

It didn't with mine, until it did.
She's studying biology ffs.
She knows, I know she knows, but to stand up against all of your friends, your captured University?
Not easy for a young autistic woman.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 15/02/2023 18:17

Actually dd didn't do assemblies so that wouldn't have made a difference and she would have rebelled at 15 about clubs.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 15/02/2023 18:19

Dd is fully into it, wants testosterone etc. She's bright. I'm working on it.

Gender identity isn't a sexuality. Now, it can be employed to give the appearance of 'rectifying' a child's/young person's sexuality. Apparently, there are references to this being the alleged aim of some parents who brought their children to the Tavistock Clinic.

So would mine at 15.

bagelbagelbagel · 15/02/2023 18:23

I know gender identity isn't a sexuality. But it falls under the LBGTQ+ umbrella and we had no discussion about anything relating to LBGTQ+.

I'd like to hear more about this. Mostly interested to see how 'gender ideology' is being noted and defined as a set of beliefs that can be supported or opposed. That seems quite significant progress.

Delphinium20 · 15/02/2023 18:49

If parents choosing what books their 11-year-old can and cannot read makes someone a Nazi, then most parents are Nazis.

FFS.

Someone mentioned term was out in some places. Odd that a young person would use their spare time reading mother chat boards. Seriously, go outside and meet some people.

Wellies54 · 15/02/2023 18:52

How is this censorship? What an amazing mother!

As parents we have a responsibility to protect our children from harm. How dare anyone tell a child that they could have been born into the WRONG body?!!! How dare anyone suggest to a child that they might need medication to correct their body, that they should take medicine which will sterilise them and damage them in many other ways too. How dare anyone suggest to a child that they should undergo surgery to remove their breasts or alter their genitals.

Would you tell a child that starving or cutting themselves is a reasonable way to deal with the troubles in their life? Is protecting them from this kind of self harm censorship too?

This has nothing to do with encouraging children to express their personality or discover their sexuality in a healthy, supportive and accepting environment.

EHCPs can last until age 25. I cannot comprehend how it's ok to blinker adults in this way.

nofluffsgiven · 15/02/2023 19:07

I think kids need to be educated on these things. Everyone should be.

SunnySnowdrop · 15/02/2023 19:10

What evidence did she provide for that?

My child would be furious if I tried to censor them like this.

Wellies54 · 15/02/2023 20:10

@SunnySnowdrop @bagelbagelbagel As the mother of an autistic daughter I am genuinely interested in what some posters think is being unfairly censored by this mother. Do you think it is right to say to a child 'there's a chance you were born in the wrong body' ? Is it right to say to a girl 'if you don't like stereotypically girly things you might be a boy but your body is wrong for your brain ' ? Please explain if you think I am missing something here?

BoredOfThisMansWorld · 15/02/2023 20:30

Trans people exist, nothing wrong with my gender non conforming kids knowing this.

Christians and Muslims exist too, and that's fine. We're atheist but interested to learn about other people's beliefs.

Unfortunately, gender ideology has been taught as fact, not "other people's beliefs".

I've spent years modelling to my children that it's fine that so many people mistake them for the opposite sex. Girls and boys are of equal worth. Sex only matters when it matters. And gender stereotypes are bullshit.

Along comes gender ideology to tell them that actually, "misgendering" someone is akin to violence! That, because of their personalities, they are the opposite sex after all! Trusted teachers in schools are teaching that gendered stereotypes are innate!

Protecting children from harmful, regressive views being taught as fact is not "censorship". Allowing gender non conforming children to thrive without input from adults who believe in gender stereotypes is hardly "blinkering" them.

Ofcourseshecan · 15/02/2023 20:31

This is excellent news. I hope other parents will take it up. Children should never be fed lies and propaganda; I despair of the teaching profession, seeing what they are telling children in place of facts.

Zodfa · 15/02/2023 20:43

Kids get so much of this stuff from the Internet (fandom spaces in particular are rife with it) and peers generally. School assemblies are an absolute drop in the ocean.
