Former US transgender centre case manager speaks up

From Bari Weiss' The Free Press:

I Thought I Was Saving Trans Kids. Now I’m Blowing the Whistle.

It's a rather gruelling piece, going into more graphic detail than we've seen from previous whistleblowers, such as from the Tavistock. But then, as Helen Joyce has noted - the Tavistock is incredibly cautious compared to the US clinics.

One such excerpt:

How little patients understood what they were getting into was illustrated by a call we received at the center in 2020 from a 17-year-old biological female patient who was on testosterone. She said she was bleeding from the vagina. In less than an hour she had soaked through an extra heavy pad, her jeans, and a towel she had wrapped around her waist. The nurse at the center told her to go to the emergency room right away.

We found out later this girl had had intercourse, and because testosterone thins the vaginal tissues, her vaginal canal had ripped open. She had to be sedated and given surgery to repair the damage. She wasn’t the only vaginal laceration case we heard about.

Other girls were disturbed by the effects of testosterone on their clitoris, which enlarges and grows into what looks like a microphallus, or a tiny penis. I counseled one patient whose enlarged clitoris now extended below her vulva, and it chafed and rubbed painfully in her jeans. I advised her to get the kind of compression undergarments worn by biological men who dress to pass as female. At the end of the call I thought to myself, “Wow, we hurt this kid.”

There are rare conditions in which babies are born with atypical genitalia—cases that call for sophisticated care and compassion. But clinics like the one where I worked are creating a whole cohort of kids with atypical genitals—and most of these teens haven’t even had sex yet. They had no idea who they were going to be as adults. Yet all it took for them to permanently transform themselves was one or two short conversations with a therapist.

That woman describes exactly what we all fear happening.

howmanybicycles · 09/02/2023 11:56

It's great when people like this speak up. Conversations about what is really being done to vulnerable adults and kids need to be direct and not dressed up with silly words like 'bottom surgery'

GrinitchSpinach · 09/02/2023 12:25

The details are horrifying. Brava this woman for speaking up.

pattihews · 09/02/2023 12:37

I think it's great she's exposed this. I note that even though she's seen through this aspect of gender reassignment she's still fully on board with gender ideology — proud to tell us that she's in a relationship with a transman and to the left of Bernie Sanders. You would hope that knowing all the damage she's been involved in, she'd have asked some deeper questions.

Being a total cynic, I wonder whether it's occurred to her that the lawsuits are coming and this is her way of getting a defence in first. But as I say, glad it's out there.

Believing in gender ideology is in a way no different to believing in any religion.

Change has to come from within. You cannot impose equal marriage upon Catholicism, for example. It is a change that the Catholic Church has to embrace. A gender-believer recognising the harm that belief is causing is a step towards embracing change that safeguards from harm.

I don't care what she believes. I don't care what lifestyle her relationship takes. I care that she recognises that it is harmful to base medicine upon gender beliefs, and that it is harmful to impose gender belief upon others.

Marking my place to remind me to read this when I have wine to hand.

I used to laugh at how people used to believe in blood-letting or the four humours, but history just repeats itself. Someone needs to tweet this piece at John Oliver (scoffs at anyone questioning the trans kids narrative), Boy George (believes doctors can literally change people's sex) or any of the other credulous fools out there.

What is she referring to here?

"I am doing so knowing how toxic the public conversation is around this highly contentious issue—and the ways that my testimony might be misused."

^^ How can what she has written be misused?

Blister · 09/02/2023 16:38

Not sure where the ^^ came from... text entry on mobile really needs to improve.

Donald Trump could quote it in his election campaign.
I have the feeling American politics is so polarised that anything not wholly supportive of what is perceived as the liberal way will be perceived as giving fodder to the right.

StephanieSuperpowers · 09/02/2023 17:06

But who cares who uses this content as long as the things she describes are stopped? Even if it takes Donald Trump to stop it.

In a similar vein, Jesse Singal apparently felt compelled to have a full two long paragraphs saying he hated Trump in an otherwise serious and useful piece about all the failings in a research paper the other day. Somewhat jarring.

I agree with you on this but I think there are people who would argue that the harm caused by a Trump victory would be so great that no matter the cost nothing should be done that might help him.

Delphinium20 · 09/02/2023 17:54

If Donald Trump uses it too much, it will just take that much longer to stop it because human nature is to dig in on the opposite when your enemies have a strong opinion on the other.

Don't underestimate the tribalism of the US. The less Trump says the better.

Clymene · 09/02/2023 18:25

That is a horrifying read. I really didn't want - don't want - to be right on this. I don't want to be able to say 'I told you so'.

The failure to follow up desisters and detransitioners is disgraceful

Fully agreed. Millions of Americans will reflexively take the opposite view on anything Trump says. Political tribalism is loads worse in the US than in the European countries I am familiar with.

This began with the birth of Fox News and the slow development of two separate information/quasi-information channels for many Americans, roughly based on voting preferences. So sometimes the two sides don't even believe in the same description of facts or events which happened. (I don't mean analysis or bias in coverage which have always differed, but the basic belief in what happened or what the facts might be.)

That is very similar to how we are being told that it's school biology to believe that there are only two sexes, and that more recent science has proved there are many sexes or that the sexes are bimodal etc. What does one do when the nature of facts is debated?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/02/2023 22:04

Just read the full article. Horrifying. Seems to be getting a lot of attention on US Twitter.

bloodyapple · 09/02/2023 22:06

God this is awful

Delphinium20 · 09/02/2023 22:46

That was a painful read. My god. Those poor children-that one girl who asked for her breasts back....I just can't fathom how anyone can do this to children.

Thelnebriati · 09/02/2023 23:01

All of those side effects were predictable. I'm horrified by these people.

NotBadConsidering · 09/02/2023 23:04

I came to post this. Nothing she’s written surprises me. I’ve seen it with my own eyes.

Moopsi · 09/02/2023 23:13

It's great that more and more articles like this are being published. I suspect the TRAs will say that it's all made up or some other nonsense.

nocoolnamesleft · 09/02/2023 23:26

Harrowing read.

Rainbowshit · 09/02/2023 23:31

Absolutely horrifying.

Moomoola · 09/02/2023 23:32

Woh. That’s horrendous. Well done her
