Reports now seem to be not mentioning rape, per se.
Not that it's any better

The 53-year-old, also known as Amy George, previously appeared at Selkirk Sheriff Court facing charges of threatening and abusive behaviour, and abduction.

He returned to the dock on Friday over a breach of sections 19, 20, 23 and 25 of the Sexual Offences Scotland Act.

They cover the sexual assault of a young child by penetration, sexual assault on a young child, sexual exposure to a young child, causing a young child to look at a sexual image and being in possession of an indecent photograph.

Truly, while I get that it sounds all kinds of wrong, it is established practice to say ‘safe and well’ in these circs.

It’s not new, and it’s not something they do for the perpetrator’s sake. It’s not intended to shield him.

They could hardly come out and say the victim had been found traumatised by sexual assault/rape, because at that stage her name was still all over the press because of the ongoing search for her. Huge violation of her privacy to say anything indicating what she’d been through.

Also they may not yet have known, if she was not ready to explain fully.

I can't imagine that the forensics were not very thorough when the police first found the poor child as the physical evidence on her body and clothes would have been crucial. There would be reasons this wasn't felt to be something that needed to be in the public domain to this point, but I doubt as with other current cases, we'll know much until the court case as important not to jeopardize a fair trial.

Re the sexual assault of a young child by penetration charge, in the Scottish Sexual Offences legislation, the word
"penetration" can include with a penis.

That poor child.

Feministwoman · 17/02/2023 15:41

(IANAL, by the way, but I have read the relevent bit of the law.)

picklemewalnuts · 17/02/2023 16:04

Dear Lord, what she endured.

DialSquare · 17/02/2023 16:05

I just can't stop thinking about her. As PP have said, I hope she has all the support she needs.

PronounssheRa · 17/02/2023 16:24

Oh FFS

That poor child

KatMcBundleFace · 17/02/2023 16:26

I see the rapist was still allowed access to red nail polish in jail.

That poor poor child. I'm so angry.

rioseco · 17/02/2023 16:29

I am SO FUCKING SiCK OF THIS

nilsmousehammer · 17/02/2023 16:34

Bloody hell that poor child.

rioseco · 17/02/2023 16:41

I wonder if Sturgeon got wind of this.

I did wonder

picklemewalnuts · 17/02/2023 17:09

I'm kind of thinking 'how could NS live with herself, then remembering that the prison policy and self ID didn't allow this crime to happen.

Maybe the flapping Overton window did, but NS isn't hugely responsible for that.

Somehow that enrages me more than anything. No matter what he has done, nothing must disturb his fantasy life.

Yes, the thought crossed my mind.

I wonder how she felt with her 'Transwomen are not a threat' line.

To be clear, women have never claimed that they were any more of a threat than any other male. But for Sturgeon to claim that they were categorically incapable of being a threat was absurd and outrageous and as shown by this case, clearly wrong.

NS did enable an environment where transwomen became a sacred caste not to be questioned, where behaviour of fetishes (AGP) in public became accepted, where little girls in schools got taught some men are women and it is fine for them to go into women’s toilets and changing rooms, where this transwomen butcher would have felt empowered and believe that should he go to prison he could serve his sentence surrounded by women, and where his crimes would have been hidden as a woman’s crime. NS was very nearly responsible for this little girl being denied the right to request a female to examine her following her ordeal. And when she grows up, if she needs ongoing therapy, to find she is denied the opportunity to do that in a single sex environment.

Walrussy · 17/02/2023 17:33

Poor little girl and her poor family. I'd hoped it wasn't anything like that.
I'm sure, in the name of consistency and dignity for all, there'll be angry clamours about this "lady" being misgendered in court and the media. Definitely.

Rightsraptor · 17/02/2023 17:53

A reminder of the IPSO consultation into the reporting of sex & gender identity.

Please do it if you can. We really need to stop this reporting of 'men as wonen' rubbish.

I do wonder if the boring kind of woman, in the cells for violent and serious abuse of a child, would get nail varnish from the police on request.

stealtheatingtunnocks · 17/02/2023 18:57

Sally Magnusson BBC Scotland news just called this scumbag “he”. She looked very comfortable while using that term, too.

Alex Cole Hamilton said in Holyrood that a raped woman does not deserve the right to request a female forensics medic to gather the evidence. Not to get a female medic, to request one.

who took the evidence from this girl’s tiny little body and her previously innocent mind?

Many MSPs who voted against the “swap gender for sex” campaign and for rhe GRR BIll have young daughters.

i hope they realise what they were voting for. I hope they think it was worth it.

That poor girl has nowhere to go for female only services. Apart from a service set up by JKR.

i keep thinking I can’t get more anger. My capacity for anger is endless.

When arrested, Kate Scottow couldn't even get sanitary products.

"Safe and well" is a very odd phrase because it certainly gives the impression that the person is basically fine. But, it's the standard police phrase it seems. It was the same one used when I was found at complete rock bottom, suicidal and just broken. But I was described as being "safe and well". I most definitely was not well, at all. I've always taken it with a pinch of salt when hearing it since then.

This poor girl endured this ordeal about a mile from where I live. It's absolutely awful to think she was going through this and nobody knew while we were all out desperately looking for her. If only she had been found sooner but by the sounds of things it seems if it had been any later it might have been a very different outcome. Utterly awful. The guy is a complete weirdo and always has been. I hope they do to him in jail whatever he's done to her and any other child.

scratchedbymycat · 17/02/2023 14:30

I agree. I think it probably means "not dead". A poster on another thread commented it could have been heading that way which totally chilled me. It probably was. How on earth could he have ever released her and got away with it? What other options had he left himself? I feel quite sick.

Police speak for 'still alive.

Like when the hospital call to tell you your mum's 'poorly' and you arrive to find her not just dead but stone cold.

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 17/02/2023 22:45

I suspect "safe and well" usually means "found conscious and was able to walk independently to the ambulance we had waiting".
