“Miller's now-closed butcher's shop, Millers of Melrose, featured in one of JK Rowling's Strike novels and at one point the relevant passage was displayed in the window.”

🤯

We had the receipts for that early!

"discrimination is bad in all forms and two wrongs don't make a right."

Okay.

If it is wrong to discriminate between men and women, is it also wrong to hold separate sporting events for men and women?

If it is wrong to discriminate against men and women, is it wrong to give separate music awards for men and women?

If it is wrong to discriminate against men and women, is it wrong to suggest that men and women have different calorific requirements?

Is the JKR reference a complete coincidence?

As in, is it a complete coincidence that she mentioned this shop in her book?

I haven't read the book and I'm confused.

ShireWifeofNigelFarage · 09/02/2023 11:01

Thanks @Happylittlechicken!

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11730763/Transgender-butcher-police-say-man-arrives-court-disappearance-schoolgirl.html

So he is at Selkirk Sheriff Court (but wasn’t listed on the court schedule in advance).

Nice of the cops to supply a blanket - shame we don’t get to see the outfit that goes with that nail varnish.

At least Questions doesn’t have to worry about the ‘transwoman’ thing anymore, cops are adamant that this ‘individual’ is a man.

Perhaps @ArabellaScott should have the title of the thread changed to ‘Girl abducted in Galashiels appears to have been held by man who calls himself Amy’?
‘Man who says he is a woman’ is a far more useful descriptor than ‘transwoman’ anyway.

I missed it! Though something weirdly satisfying about the connection.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 09/02/2023 11:04

Have they started to put some stronger coffee in the Scottish police stations or is something else going on here?

Dunno.

The mention of the butchers is positive/neutral and potentially long predates this bloke regularly crossdressing at work (although he’s been known as a cross dresser for years).

But perhaps a chance encounter between them planted the seed that eventually grew into JK’s tervern tree?

I guess we won’t know before trial/conviction is done and dusted, maybe not ever.

There was a report in The Times the other day about how the GRR Bill had pissed off the Police because a rational sex offender amendment had been binned and replaced with a weak version that landed the responsibility (and presumably blame when it goes wrong) on the Police. Without the Police having been consulted.

nauticant · 09/02/2023 11:08

That was to YetAnotherSpartacus.

borntobequiet · 09/02/2023 11:08

Pouty selfies all over social media - a blanket over head going into court. What a weird world we live in.
I do hope that if they plead guilty the defence is “But trans”.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 09/02/2023 11:10

Thank you! I'm behind on my reading but I will look it up.

Agencies buck passing and going in fear to take responsibility is yet another aspect of this that is common in serious case reviews of major safeguarding disasters.

nauticant · 09/02/2023 11:16

Ahh, the text string archive, followed by a dot, followed by fo, with no spaces, will trigger auto-hide on MN.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 09/02/2023 11:19

Got it! Thanks.

Absolutely!

And they’ll do a lot of a finger pointing at anti -discrimination EDI policies no doubt (policies that should never have been signed off on as not legally compliant, but lobby group compliant)

YetAnotherSpartacus · 09/02/2023 11:23

There was an interesting interactive table in that article that Labour should take note of.

Discrimination is necessary sometimes. It's obvious to most people with half a brain.

I don't call keeping reserved spaces for women and disable people discrimination, but I can't think of a better word. I think that most people see it for what it is, protection and are happy with the situation.

It's not discriminatory, as would be refusing to employ and Indian person, for example.

Blaming transition for their crimes seems to constitute something of a defence for many of these men.

At what point does it become a motivation?

GrabbyGabby · 09/02/2023 11:40

Come on ladies, you know better than this. Justwllingthetruth is nowhere near being a worthy opponent. Save your words for somone a bit less sanctimonious and hard of thinking. Discriminate more.

Justellingthetruth · 09/02/2023 11:51

@ShireWifeofNigelFarage

another shouting rant from you.
dear me.

Helleofabore · 09/02/2023 11:52

I don't call keeping reserved spaces for women and disable people discrimination, but I can't think of a better word.

It is discrimination in its essential form though, isn’t it? It is a form of positive discrimination in that it makes things better for women and disabled people. But it is negative discrimination against others.

Having a poster just keep repeating ‘discrimination = bad’ is showing just one of the inane tactics of those who can only think ideologically. Without any real sense of wider scope that is reality and how ‘discrimination’ works.

Justellingthetruth · 09/02/2023 11:54

@GrabbyGabby

wow if you ever try and stop discrimination here you get comments like that.

I hope you se it's beneath you.

I am to be clear against discrimination for all.
I am for safety for all and happy balances.
I actually think self determination with out a medical view is wrong but I am also against discriminatory headlines like this one.

so really calling oppenent says you are against these things and if you are I hope in time you will foregive yourself
