Queer appropriation

Funny innit that for a certain section of TQs the tipping point from 'stunning and brave' to 'appropriation' is blokes like Harry Styles. Not rapists and creepy transbian fetishists.

The frothing on social media for these 'queer bating' cultural interlopers is hilarious to see. Why are some attempts at GNC/ NB / gender fuckery not valid?

Just to try to understand this, they're saying "identifying" as a "cis" man, but wearing a frock is "appropriation"? And not appropriation from "cis" women, but from trans?

If so then it really is about policing stereotype roles. If you're a man and you want to wear a frock or makeup then you must redefine yourself as a woman?

NicolaSturgeonsSOGIbottom · 06/02/2023 17:02

Non binary and gender fluid young uns and the ever-shifting sands of what is and isn’t socially acceptable is going to cause all
sorts of bother within the progressive, intersectional stack.
The tradtrans crowd aren’t going to be spared and they certainly can’t keep up - I just found this,
RMW misgendering Sam Smith on Twitter:

Poor Sam Smith.
They’re/They’re Sam Smith.

Some of the people I follow on Instagram are constantly sharing stories about how awful Harry Styles is for appropriating "queer culture" despite not being queer.

Personally I love him. A man wearing a dress without claiming he's a woman. Fab. plus he's hot

NicolaSturgeonsSOGIbottom · 06/02/2023 17:16

Do you think they would have gone after Bowie for being too heteronormative?

I came across the word ‘homonormative’ for the first time the other day.

JustStopOilyPoshKids · 06/02/2023 17:18

It's awash with in groups/ out groups. There's the normals/mainstream/ cishet and there's queer. Which is some marginalised, oppositional group. But by the logic of self ID why is HS not living their own authentic truth, rejecting the cisheteronormative hegemony?! What's lacking in his performance? Slogans? Hair dye?

Or is it that he's already had a successful, mainstream career?

I thought about appropriation early with the news from the Grammy Awards:

YES! Now for sure. Obviously being a trailblazer, art schooly and having Genet references has cemented Bowie as worthy in queer folklore. But he would never get away with being a basic he/him pop icon and not wanting to talk about his sexuality now

And they are all appropriating 90s/2000s stuff and attempting to apply ‘Queer’ social rules on top.

The punk sub Reddit is basically stuck in a never ending loop where teenagers make declarations about this thing or that thing not being punk and older millennials and gen Xers trying to point out that making rules about what is and isn’t punk isn’t punk.

Also, the young ‘uns want to posthumously cancel GG Allin.

Arf @ cancel GG Allin. I guess he'd need a pretty big trigger warning!

Styles always looks like he badly needs a bath.

And the less said about Smith... well, the more he'll hate it, I suppose.

I agree. I love him too. Did these people never see Bowie ? Or Marc Bolan? Mick Jagger ? Grace Jones ? Annie Lennox ?

THE MOB CAME FOR BEYONCÉ?

😱😱😱😱

Whowhatwherewhenwhynow · 06/02/2023 17:37

I don’t understand the logic behind saying he appropriates “queer style”.
he wears dresses and other traditionally stereotypically female clothing. Why is that appropriating queer people and not just wearing what he wants?

Maybe the people criticising him are American ? There is a much longer British tradition of bands breaking stereotypes .

Whowhatwherewhenwhynow · 06/02/2023 17:44

Maybe

Surely though giving the message that men wearing dresses is only for gay/queer men is reinforcing stereotypes of what it means to be gay?

turbonerd · 06/02/2023 17:45

Harry Styles, Harry Schmyles.

I want to know what they think about Timothee Chalet (? Spelling) in his halterneck outfit! He is even prettier than Styles, so maybe his (zis) appropriation is more .. eh appropriate.

turbonerd · 06/02/2023 17:47

Also, you just know they have missed ALL the prog rock guys AND the poodle rock dudes in their Quest for Outrage

Well yes.
I was an eighties teenager, all my male friends wore shedloads of makeup, and all kinds of outfits, whether gay or straight. It feels as though we have gone backwards into strict stereotyping.

Not worth a new thread but seeing as The Grammy’s came up in this one:

Dave Chapelle win.

www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/general-news/dave-chappelle-grammy-netflix-the-closer-trans-controversy-1235316559/

Delphinium20 · 06/02/2023 19:58

Ohh I LOVE that Dave won this.

In an irony similar to JKR, The Closer is actually dedicated to a transwoman who was a friend of Dave's. TRAs hounded her and she committed suicide.

JKR, "I know and love trans people."

Chapelle: dedicates final punchline in honor of transwoman who is a fellow comedian.

Honestly-who hates transpeople, really?!?

I like this quote from big boss CEO for the Recording Academy:

Harvey Mason jr
The Hollywood Reporter in part, “We don’t control who the voters vote for.”

“If the voters feel like a creator deserves a nomination, they’re going to vote for them,” Mason jr. said, addressing controversial nominees. “We’re never going to be in the business of deciding someone’s moral position or where we evaluate them to be on the scale of morality. I think our job is to evaluate the art and the quality of the art. We can make sure that all of our spaces are safe and people don’t feel threatened by anyone. But as far as the nominations or the awards, we really let the voters make that decision
