PM programme on now. Evan Davis says there will be an item where gamers discuss whether to boycott the new Hogwarts Legacy game.

OP posts:

Even if LGBT-supportive people do want to play this game, maybe it will be shared around on torrents or the pirate bay.

Perhaps they should just go without, when so many people are struggling to eat or pay bills?

Sounds like someone is supporting theft there.

GCAcademic · 03/02/2023 14:49

It's £50 a copy, you must be in a very fortunate position to waste a couple hundred pounds at a time when lots of people are struggling to eat or pay bills.

Some women have jobs, money and autonomy. Shocking, isn't it?

Ladyofthesea · 03/02/2023 16:10

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 02/02/2023 17:20

I've never played a computer game in my life. Think I'll buy a few copies of this though.

Same here.

nauticant · 03/02/2023 16:30

No Evan Davis on PM tonight.

I wonder if they'll get the woman presenter, Carolyn Quinn I think, to apologise on his behalf?

IwantToRetire · 03/02/2023 16:52

At one time I was complaining nearly every day about how ED was using PM to further his personal agenda. Never once got a reply.

And hard as it might seem, I think compared to other occassions he was less overt than he has been. ie adding in the words other people say ...

But if as has been said they then repeated the clip on the Today programme that really is bad.

The point is it isn't a story. Stacey and friends failed months ago to get anyone to boycott it. The only reason for bringing this up now was to promote Stacey.

And even with the cuts the BBC is having, using such a pathetic clip again is just unjustifiable.

I still cant work out how ED ever got the job. He spends his time sniggering and seems quite out of his depth.

And of course uses his position to do biased reporting.

I think I saw someone ask about postal address for complaints. I think this is it:

I'm sorry to hear you have too much money you need rid of, but wouldn't it make more sense to donate to perhaps a homeless charity instead of a billionaire who lives in a mansion/castle in the richest part of Edinburgh?

Marg, women can spend their money on what they want to, we’re not in Gilead yet. And how do you know that we don’t all have monthly donations to food banks/heat banks/etc? It is literally none of your business how people spend their money.
Go and hector billionaires about how they spend their money. I mean, you could have included JKR in that group, but she’s not a billionaire anymore, y’know, after giving so much to charity…..

MargaritaPie · 03/02/2023 17:45

It just seems strange IMO to make a point of saying you will buy multiple copies of an expensive video game you have zero intention of playing.

But you're right, it's a free country so people can throw bundles of cash in their fire to keep warm if they so wish.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/02/2023 18:08

I can buy you one becuase you're obviously desperate to play it Grin

ickky · 03/02/2023 18:11

Can't wait, game looks brilliant. I ordered it ages ago, also ordered the deluxe version which I wouldn't normally do, just to give a bit more royalties to the fabulous JKR.

I don't think the boycott has worked, it's sold out now on shopto.

What a crying shame.

Jkr will likely pass on her share of the profit, but sure, many with spare cash may prefer to just support charities directly - there's a range of good ideas in the Philanthropy section of this, as it happens. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J.K.._Rowling

Speakingofdinosaurs · 03/02/2023 19:01

Sent my complaint to the BBC

ReunitedThorns · 03/02/2023 19:25

It's currently the highest selling game on Amazon (no.1 spot is taken by a credit pack).

Boycott going well I see.

IWannaBeInTheRoomWhereItHappens · 05/02/2023 15:30

I will buy it, I'm a gamer and it looks incredible. All thanks to JKRs amazing world building in the first place.

SinnerBoy · 05/02/2023 16:03

WifeOfTiresias · 03/02/2023 13:40

News flash Evan, there are many, many people around the world who agree with JKR. This was one of the most blatantly unbalanced pieces of reporting I have heard in a long time and Evan really needs to be brought to account on this.

Yet when Steph McGovern mocked Boris Johnson, by using his own words and described herself as a girly swot, she was carpeted immediately. Is there some sort of connection, do you think?

Saltovinegar · 06/02/2023 06:28

Thank you, this thread has reminded me to preorder a copy for my Switch.

Happylittlechicken · 06/02/2023 06:47

Just bought It for DD. Can’t believe you’re encouraging piracy @marg shocking. Just shocking,

lechiffre55 · 06/02/2023 09:54

You know if you are sick of the BBC bias that there's something you can do that REALLY hurts them right?
Stop paying for the TV license. That money goes directly to supporting the BBC. Just stop paying them your money which they use to make propaganda against you.
If you want to stop paying you may not watch or record any live broadcast TV on any channel on any device in your home. You also may not use the BBC iPlayer service in any way.
If you want to try and make the process smoother you can formally let them know that you don't need a TV license any more, but it doesn't make much difference, and you are under no legal obligation to do so.

What you CAN'T do if you don't have a TV license:
You can't watch or record BBC or any other live broadcast TV on ANY channel. e.g. ITV
You can't watch or record live TV on say Sky because that's live broadcast TV. Even though you pay for Sky, it's still live broadcast so you need a TV license.
You can't watch BBC iPlayer under any circumstance.

What you CAN do if you don't have a TV license:
Watch on demand shows and movies on any service like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Now TV ( but NOT iPlayer ). Basically any streaming service where the show doesn't have a schedule, and it starts when you click play. You may NOT watch live broadcasts on these services.
Also videos on the internet like you tube are fine. As long as they are not being broadcast live. So for instance you couldn't watch KJK broacast her protests while they were streaming live, but once the stream has stopped you can now watch it becuase it's no longer live. Watch the day after if you really want to cover your butt.
You can listen to the radio including BBC stations without a TV license.
You can visit the BBC website to say read the news or look at the weather forecast. You just can's use BBC iPlayer website.

What will happen if you do this:
The BBC sub contracts to companies like Crapita to go after TV license non payers. They take the attitude everyone needs a TV license - an assumption of guilt which seems contrary to the legal assumption of innocence.
They will send you no end of stupid threating letters. I get at least one every month. These letters escallate in how urgent and scary they are borderline threatening you will all sorts of consequences. The truth is they are just trying to scare you into paying up. You can safely ignore them. Every so often the letters get to the end of the scary track and reset back to the beginning again. I have a stack a foot tall of these bloody things.
When the electric or gas man comes to read the meter they will pay attention to if you have a TV on watching live TV. They also do the TV licensing, so if they see you watching TV they will come back with their TV licensing badge another time and they will know you have been watching live TV. Don't cheat. They will have you.

Do not cheat. Do not cancel your TV license and then watch TV. Make a stand for your rights and stick to it. It's surprisingly easy to get over. When we cancelled it took me 3 days to get over the TV not being on anymore. There's a huge variety of legal alternatives out there. You'll no longer be paying the BBC money to waste on propaganda. Choose to make a stand and do it properly. You'll discover how many amazing and legal alternatives there are to the BBC. Your own money won't be used against you any more. Help get rid of their bias. The amount of people already not paying the license fee is a huge problem for the BBC. Every single person who cancels the TV license is making a huge difference. That's 3 Harry Potter games worth of fuck you to the BBC bias. Vote with your wallet.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 06/02/2023 10:34

I cancelled mine last year. Did it online, got a bit of a refund on what I had paid as I used to pay for the year. Don't miss it; I have Netflix, Amazon and Disney plus so I've loads to watch. I used YouTube for watching the Remembrance Sunday parade live, that's the only time I would have otherwise watched live TV. A little bit gutted to miss watching the latest Strike adaptation but I got over it.

I was expecting a lot of "you don't have a TV licence!!" letters but actually haven't had any.

I don't use BBC news as a source at all anymore either. Switched to Sky News website and a sub to The Times.

I don't miss the BBC at all. Which is a shame, as I really do believe in the idea of a independent, unbiased national news service - but the BBC has strayed too far away from that now.

nauticant · 06/02/2023 10:47

For anyone looking at the BBC and wondering what happened, there's a parallel in the US with NPR. Peter Boghossian made a series on youtube about this and it's a very interesting watch:

An easy entry point is the amusing dinosaur emoji episode:

This is a new low for you Maggie.

It's not your concern what women spend their own money on.
