Mumsnet vibrator: for "mothers, women and people with wombs"

Amongst otherthings that stand out from the article:

"We knew from previous activations with our community that sex and motherhood is a deeply-rooted taboo. The lack of conversation and resources on the topic is leaving women and people with wombs feeling side-lined as sexual beings. At Smile Makers, we have been tackling taboos around female sexuality for over 10 years and that was obviously an important one to remove"

Where to start with the language mangling? Confused

What other people with wombs other than women are there? I mean they obviously know these people are female as they talk about female sexuality, but I’m curious as to who else but women would a) have a womb b) be a mother? Why are mothers singled out what about aunts, sisters, grandmothers….

@Happylittlechicken Trans men.
And it's soooo important that they don't feel excluded from every product for which 99.9% of users will not be trans men.

That can fuck right off. Blah. It's WOMEN. Mades me mad.

Actually 'previous activations with our community' is almost as hideous as the womb crap!

How about women who no longer have wombs?

If it’s a vibrator, WTF has a womb got to do with it?

It your vibrator's in your womb, you've gone very wrong somewhere.

Yuck! Mental picture of some weirdo with an extensive anatomy collection. I'm assuming they're trying to be inclusive (I'm starting to feel that can get in the sea along with 'be kind'). Don't many TM have a hysterectomy, either electively, 'cos dysphoria, or because of the baleful affect of excessive testosterone on women's bodies.

Quite - does my hysterectomy exclude me from purchasing this product?

The entire rest of the article references women and specifically mothers though, there's no ambiguity what a woman or mother is either.

I can't get upset at one token 'and womb owners' reference in that article to tick the inclusivity box for any person that might want to use the toy and who doesn't wish to refer to themselves as a woman.

I'm not sure 'person with a womb' is a very inclusive alternative for describing those people not happily covered by 'women' tbh but I'm assuming someone will have checked with that sub-set of vibrator users and found it suitable!

By being 'inclusive' have they not 'excluded' women without wombs? And what about blokes who 'feel' like they have a womb? and what does having or not having a womb have to do with vibrators anyway? I am totally lost!

Maybe David Lynch is in their target market? (His uterus belonged to one of his film producer's daughters and now resides in a jar)

You're fine as long as you identify as a woman, of course.

The question is, what about adult human females who, like you, have had a hysterectomy, but no longer identify as women? Is this advertisement aimed at them? Is this product suitable for them?

An earlier version spoke of 'vulva owners' but they seem to have edited that out after feedback on the AIBU thread.

Report
GrumpyPanda · 01/02/2023 17:44

Logically, surely this means "women" don't have wombs since they're listed as separate entities?

Is motherhood and sex a deeply rooted taboo? Confused God knows which community they’ve been engaging with to come up with this guff but it’s a community for whom the clitoris has passed them by. Probably trans women…

"The idea of anything entering down there after giving birth is enough to make you cringe."

Cringe?

"motherhood is a deeply-rooted taboo"

No it isn't.

"sex and motherhood is a deeply-rooted taboo"

The two together make a taboo? These days?

"people with wombs feeling side-lined as sexual beings"

Well the advert has certainly dehumanised these "people". "With wombs".

And apart from anything else, the first thing I thought when I saw the picture was that it looks like that slanty nozzle you use on the vacuum cleaner that makes a very loud sound and sucks very hard but seems to be for the skirting board?

Aside from all that, I'm creeped out by "The Whisperer". Yes, I know it's supposed to suggest that you can get off without the chainsaw-like cacophony of an inferior vibrator motor waking all under-fives within a ten mile radius, causing them to sleepily barge into your bedroom and destroy the mood with their questions. But it makes me think of unpleasant, sleazy men leaning in to make quiet but unwanted comments, or feathery-stroker types who think they're being arousing when it's quite the opposite.
