Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Women's rights general conversations - Thread 3

Continuation of Thread 2.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions, grr"- that sort of thing).

Press conf. 11 am.

I bet she does not mention trans at all.

angelico53 · 15/02/2023 10:20

I saw on the twitters that she was resigning to spend nore time with her mwtaphysical beliefs.

NotDrowningJustCrowing · 15/02/2023 11:11

That's good news for women. At least I hope it is.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 15/02/2023 11:21

Wow.

That rather trumps the link I came here to post, but here it is anyway. Starmer pledges that Labour 'will never again be a party captured by narrow interests': twitter.com/Suebeloo1971/status/1625791066023636992?

Not, of course, talking about those narrow, capturing interests - but nevertheless a public commitment that he can be challenged with.

angelico53 · 15/02/2023 11:46

A very dignified resignation speech, with some allusion to "recent pressures" and a predictable call for tolerance and moderation. I must confess that before I was aware of her gender ideology views, I rather liked Sturgeon.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 15/02/2023 11:53

Some weird ploppers lately.

There is a lot of bad SNP wood underneath Nicola Sturgeon’s veneer.

I agree in that she did come across as a capable adult/serious politician but loads of positive-sounding SNP policies have failed to materialise in any meaningful way and in terms of day to day issues such as health, education, housing & transport data suggests her term as FM has been a bit pants.
Plus the one thing the SNP was founded to achieve, independence, has now lost the public support it had gained.

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 15/02/2023 12:19

Not my comment, just copied over from the (very fast moving) Sturgeon thread:

Lest we forget eh Nicola:

Scotland has one of the highest drug death rates in the developed world. With 1,330 drug misuse deaths in 2021[2], this represents a marginal decrease on the record high of 2020 and still 4.6 times as many deaths compared with 2000.

An independent review by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, a Paris-based agency, found the Scottish education system had failed to keep pace with the latest best practice and had no long-term strategies or vision.

Scotland has the worst health inequalities in western and central Europe:
The gap in life expectancy between the most and least deprived areas in Scotland is roughly 13 years for males and 10 years for females
The gap in healthy life expectancy (the number of years lived in good health) is even greater - roughly 23 years for males and 24 years for females

It is estimated that 19% of Scotland’s population (1.03 million people each year) were living in relative poverty after housing costs in 2017-20.

Rumours it is more finance related than Self ID related.

I would assume so.

Women's (the old-fashioned kind) rights are unimportant, least of all the rights of women prisoners.

Whereas money is very important, most of all the money of the rich and powerful.

The illegal use of funds has bubbled to the top, but is that a result of her loss of popularity, because of her trans extremist stance?

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 15/02/2023 16:26

I see there's a ridiculous copy and paste thing going round FB blaming JKR for the recent murder and asking if she's happy now.

I've sent the person I saw share it a link to JKR's essay and asked if they think they're helping the situation. So I'm expecting a slightly shorter friend list next time I log in.

Gonners · 15/02/2023 17:39

Isn't the Sturgeon thing supposed to be connected with her husband subbing the party when they've been short of funds by means of loans? A sort of reverse-Boris!

Tricyrtis2022 · 15/02/2023 17:55

Artemisia Gentileschi too. She did some incredibly blood thirsty stuff - with good reason - but her rich depictions of fabrics is beautiful.

Funnily enough, I rarely talk about this in real life, but our niece came up for a long weekend. I took her and her husband to the pub and my wife took the baby.

At some point, we were talking about Harry Potter, she's a big fan. She asked me what I thought about JKR and as she's very liberal minded, I was cautious and asked if she thought she was a transphobe.

"Of course not, I've read her essay. Have YOU?"

Phew! She hadn't heard of Maya F, Alison Bailey, K Stock - she says she's going to look them up.

A loan of £107,000.

Nicola's pronouns are now was/were

SinnerBoy · 15/02/2023 19:00

Was / Were / Has Been

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 15/02/2023 21:47

Good uncle-ing, Sinner.

Well, I had a response. Not read the essay, never read anything she's written on the topic, but has heard her speak and she very definitely said heaps of bigoted transphobic things. Of course they can't remember the exact details ...

<Sigh>

MmePoppySeedDefage · 15/02/2023 22:59

Maybe she'll take the opportunity to have a look, Bint. So many people who are now GC started out being kind, and then something piqued their interest or struck them as being not quite right. Maybe she's never asked herself what JKR said, and will check.

I'm at a meeting with members of the civil service tomorrow and am mentally preparing myself to be asked to state my pronouns...
