So, cervical screening obviously isn't for me then, a Woman, who doesn't consider herself to have been 'assigned' anything at any stage? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Righto...

A gender non-conforming person? What, any gender non-conforming person?

Why not just say assigned female at birth if that's the language they want to use? By including more options (presumably in an attempt to be clear), they've included gender non-confirming males.

Jadedandlost · 23/01/2023 16:26

It’s also excluding rather than inclusive - women with English as a second language, women with learning g difficulties etc.

Eloradannin2nd · 23/01/2023 16:25

There is also another advert aimed solely at women. But hey, lets ignore what doesn't fit the narrative??

That advert doesn't mention women Confused

There's a photo of one though?? It must be exhausting being so offended all the time.

thedancingbear · 23/01/2023 16:30

I'm astonished that anyone would have a problem with this tbh. It's aiming to get women who may not otherwise have done so to go for a smear test.

You can be in complete ideological opposition to someone, or a group of people, but still prefer them not to die of cancer.

Oh well in that case the fact that the bowel cancer ad I saw recently had a man on I shall stop looking for signs of bowel cancer.

Thedaysthatremain · 23/01/2023 16:33

Gosh yes there are no other types of awareness or other demographics targeted. None at all.

But still no mention of the word 'woman', although they managed to say 'man' in the other advert.
You are correct, it's exhausting having to protect our rights all the time. Especially when it involves people whose whole job is supposed to be the understanding of biology.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 23/01/2023 16:35

It clearly says it is for you if you're a woman assigned female at birth.

I am a woman and no-one assigned me anything that I know about. If I didn't read it through very carefully I would assume that was just trans people and nothing to do with other women. But I am guessing this publicity is only addressed to trans people and there's some other publicity to catch the attention of the rest of us?

FettleOfKish · 23/01/2023 16:36

@thedancingbear The only people I'm in ideological opposition to here are the communications department at my local government.

@Eloradannin2nd The second ad doesn't mention Women either, it simply suggests that anyone 25+ can book a smear. I'll advise DH to book his 🙄

In seriousness, I'm glad to see there is more than one version of the ad, but the one I shared is the only one that I've seen pop up on social feeds, without going digging in their posts. Maybe that's algorithms, maybe it's what they're choosing to boost.

So a gender non-conforming person is welcome?

I wouldn't really think it was for me. Asian born and brought-up, I would switch off after the first few descriptors.

WhoNeedsSleepNotISaidMyBody · 23/01/2023 16:40

I wasn't 'assigned' female at birth, I was observed to BE female.

how fucking clueless would you have to be, as a female, but to have chosen to live as a man, but not still realise your biological sex means you still need a CS?

if you lack that much intelligence...

I find this really offensive. I don't prefer anyone to die of cancer.
Standing up for women doesn't mean I prefer anyone else to die of cancer.

Suggest you take that back.

FettleOfKish · 23/01/2023 16:42

@Thedaysthatremain That's great but the post being discussed here is nothing to do with the UK Government, Public Health England or the NHS.

This is the appropriate link; interestingly the word Woman only appears on the page in reference to Trans-Women NOT requiring a smear.

FOTTFSOFTFOASM · 23/01/2023 16:43

"Women, and anyone else who has a cervix" would cover it perfectly well.

And fuck knows why they can't illustrate it with a picture of a woman who looks like a woman.

WackyDuck · 23/01/2023 16:47

I don't understand why they can't use "Adult human female regardless of how you identify" if they're trying to avoid the word woman. Surely that covers all bases and it's surely only one step from AFAB?

To be honest though, I really can't understand why the word Woman has to be omitted from anything health related. It's like the NHS are playing some weird game of Articulate or something.

In what way is this advert soleley aimed at women? It doesn't mention women at all.

MattDillonsEyebrows · 23/01/2023 16:50

I actually agree with PP that this is an outreach. If I glanced at this poster in a waiting room, I’d see a rather odd looking bloke so probably wouldn’t take any notice. If I bothered to read it, I’d probably be pissed off.

I’d be marginally less pissed off if the equivalent trans woman poster was next to it. But that will never happen because whilst it’s fine to remind transmen, they’re not really men, we all know it’s not ok to remind transwomen that they need prostrate checks and actually they’re not really women.

Would you prefer the advert not to be run, knowing the net result could be people within this demographic (which, whatever you think of it, exists), being less likely to go for a smear test?

Eloradannin2nd · 23/01/2023 16:25

But there is absolutely no mention of woman or women in that one. Just a photo of a person with a baby

Eloradannin2nd · 23/01/2023 16:27

How do you know it's a photo of a woman? are you the person in the photograph?

Tinysoxxx · 23/01/2023 16:58

What percentage of the population know what a cervix is? If you are not going to mention the word women, then have a labelled diagram of the female reproductive system so it gives the target audience a chance.

FanFckingTastic · 23/01/2023 16:59

FFS - so many words and ways to try and please everyone, because heaven forbid we might remind them that they are the sex that they are, not the fantasy that they want.

It's not hard. Got a cervix? Get a smear!

OkPedro · 23/01/2023 16:59

We are assuming the person in the second ad is a woman.. how do we know how they identify?

This does seem to be an ad tailored specifically for that purpose. If it is part of a series and this ad is used in specifically targeted media for a specific audience, then I think that it should be a different discussion.

If this was aimed at mainstream media only and is a one off.... then that is a communication fail.
