So, cervical screening obviously isn't for me then, a Woman, who doesn't consider herself to have been 'assigned' anything at any stage? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Righto...

A Man (because of course it was a Man) on Twitter has advised me today that we don't have the right to insist on being referred to as Women, because gender is a social construct and in medical messaging particularly Male and Female is fine, the correct terms and not reducing us to biology at all.

I've asked him why we can't therefore include Transmen and non-binary people who have female bodies under the simple catch-all of Female and be done with ALL constructed gender labels in medical messaging, but he's gone very quiet...

I was observed to be female at birth. I wasn't assigned anything. (Well I suppose my parents assigned me my name).
Luckily for me I know that I need my smear tests regardless of if I agree with the wording or not.

Women with LDs/English as a 2nd or other language may not.

This is the point. Women with LDs/English as a 2nd or other language may not (know they need smear tests). Also women with poor reading skills, conditions that cause limited attention span, and many other obstacles.

Pandering to people who deny their sex is actually harmful, because it gives rise to convoluted language that distorts the message. Health information should be simple, clear and accurate.

Does anyone genuinely think that trans men don't know they are biologically female?

Girls are currently identifying as trans or nonbinary while still at school. And schools are getting sex education from Stonewall. Children are growing up believing gender fantasy is reality. So yes, I think it’s frighteningly possible.

Delphinium20 · 24/01/2023 17:33

Heads up witches: I guess we can't use the word that you might use if your uncle thought he was Napoleon.

Delphinium20 · 24/01/2023 17:34

Well, female and male is used for other species, so if you want to be human specific, you use woman, man, girl, boy.

Delphinium20 · 24/01/2023 17:40

Let me try this again:

I think some trans people truly believe they are the opposite sex. Some of the things I've heard from trans people I know:

"I am a woman because I feel a range of emotions that only women feel"

" I knew I was a woman because I cried at the drop of a hat, just like women do."

"I know I am a woman because I've always felt this way but didn't know until recently that this is how women feel."

"I have full body orgasms that last hours just like women do."

"I don't feel like other men feel."

"I'm knew I was a boy because other girls don't like the things I like."

Delphinium20 · 24/01/2023 17:45

One more quote from a young transwoman I know who believes (not just wants to be one) they are a woman:

"I have euphoria when I wear a dress, just like other women."

Oh fuck I've been doing Womaning wrong.

FettleOfKish We may need to report you to the Ministry of Womaning for wrong feels.

The frustration I've felt when countering these arguments almost makes me bang my head. "What about women who hate wearing dresses and skirts?" Response, "well, that's okay if they don't want to." Just zero self-reflection.

Seriously? When I wear a dress I'm thinking, "My legs will be cold, have I got the right shoes, am I over dressed, oh maybe I'll just wear jeans instead!"

Dread and the urge to scratch at the material until i can get the Fucking thing off is usually how i feel in a dress.I

W hose stupid idea was it to design dresses with zips at the back that take a second person to help dress and undress you?

I have full body orgasms that last hours just like women do

My orgasm today lasted all the way to a hospital appointment and back. It reached a peak at 1PM when I bought a Tesco Meal Deal at the discounted Clubcard rate.

To me, when you erase the word woman you erase a history of meaning and understanding, of a fight for equality, of a position and perspective in the world, of a feeling as a type of body and 'other' who was originally viewed in relation to men and has since (and very recently) become a word to be proud of, a full encapsulation of what it is to be an adult human female. It is NOT just another word for female. It is who I am and my position in the world.

Just like the word mother comes from a centuries upon centuries of women, mothers, birthing infants, dying for infants, giving life with their bodies and putting all else aside for those babies and children across wars and famines and terrors. A mother is more than just a word. A word that can be replaced.

I do not want these words erased.

Why is it ok the stake a claim on some words, but not these words?

This, and in particular this:

It is who I am and my position in the world.

and

I do not want these words erased.

Yet this is exactly what is demanded: Our definitions of ourselves are to be erased so that others can define themselves as they wish which requires redefining us. We have had no public consultations about these changes.

That's not true. You yourself argued with me for pages over the fact that a trans man was represented, over and above, and at the direct cost of, other demographics of women. Not the majority, but other intersectional minorities of women.

Hein? What? My argument has always been that healthcare messaging for women should be clear. You want trans whatever ads doesn't do anything to me .I don't care.just make the ones for women clear. Don't put words in people's mouths...

Blister · 24/01/2023 20:43

Actually it is very very irritating that saying that anything related to trans might have a detriment to women simply means anti trans. Things are actually sometimes detrimental to women .

Blister · 24/01/2023 20:46

Saying that the male default is detrimental to women in business does not mean I'm anti men . It must be possible for people to eventually see women as a group of people at some point .like really see us. Argh. I've lost my words.

Here is one from Thames Valley

twitter.com/thamesv_cancer/status/1617508751539314690?s=46&t=XDjEOs65TcyjXd3oCIgdAQ

All people with a cervix aged 25-64 are eligible for #cervicalscreening. Those registered as male need to request an appt from their GP practice or a local sexual health clinic.

This is ridiculous messaging. Again relying on people knowing they have a cervix.

It really is important to have separate messages and separate applications/designs etc. And it is imperative that women are not discriminated against by getting a weak and ambiguous message to accommodate another group.

whereaw · 25/01/2023 11:20

I have a good idea for a poster...

"Women's health has been overlooked centuries. We won't overlook it anymore.

If you are a woman, and/ or a person with a cervix aged between 24-64 you are eligible for a free cervical screening."

and if you don't know what a cervix is or that women get automatically get invited this one appears to be explicitly saying its for men.

which is even worse than the other examples on here.
