Remember 'No debate'?

I'd just like to take a moment to point out:

Front page BBC
Front page Telegraph
Front page Times
Front page National
Front page Daily Mail
Front page Express

(and probably other papers, too, that was my local newsstand)

Radio 4, LBC, Newsnight

Cass Report

House of Commons debate.
House of Lords debate.
MPs from all parties raising the issues, talking about women's sex based rights.

And as the Speaker said yesterday, this is just the beginning.

It is truly extraordinary that from being something that nobody was interested in/ not an issue/ women being censored, is now at the top of the agenda. Thanks Nicola.

BellaAmorosa · 18/01/2023 16:19

Exactly, women's rights being talked about and the debate not framed purely as a question of trans rights. The irony of NS trying to spark a frenzy about independence and in fact enabling a discussion of the ways in which predatory men are being facilitated.

And the full Cass Report to come.

IceyDicey · 18/01/2023 16:20

Hope it reaches the Guardian soon.

ArabellaScott · 18/01/2023 16:28

It was while I was watching the HoC debate yesterday I was thinking how far this has come. Nobody would even broach the subject a few years back. And now everyone's talking about it, and although there's lots of disagreement, the issues are front and centre.

In the postoffice today, "That Scottish woman wants boys to turn into girls". Chap behind the counter was baffled and outraged - "When I was 16 I would have said I was a girl just to get into their changing room." Quite.

ArabellaScott · 18/01/2023 17:29

Chap behind the counter cuts to the quick of what the Scottish Govt spent six years avoiding.

As I said on one of the other threads on this topic - what’s happened is important because it means people concerned about women‘s rights are finally getting a voice.

This side of the debate has been silenced by screams of ‘transphobe’ and ‘bigot’ for too long - simply for expressing concern about women’s legitimate rights. Only incredible powerful women, e.g. JKR, have felt in any way able to speak out.

This is clearly now changing, which I’m personally really grateful for.

Was this hypothetical or can you provide a link?

Xiaoxiong · 18/01/2023 17:32

Pretty sure @Motorina is recounting a conversation she had herself at the post office today.

Motorina · 18/01/2023 17:35

@Xiaoxiong exactly. I was returning all the stuff I'd bought in the post-christmas sales cos I was too fat for it and the chap behind the counter started the conversation. Rural post office, so it's usual to have a natter whilst you're there, but this surprised me. Lots of lovely sunlight.

Although I found it horrifying Lloyd Russell Moyle's aggressive attack on Miriam Cates in the HoC yesterday - broadcast live on BBC - in response to her calm, reasonable speech, will have shown a lot of people exactly how this debate has been conducted.

And that they're the type of men who demand that schools teach children how to choke each other during sex as Lloyd RM has demanded.

Considering that before the shit show that Nicola ensured the end of 2022 was no one was really taking about this in a mainstream way as opposed to the fact that a few weeks into 2023 and suddenly EVERYONE is talking about it, I never thought id say this but

Thank you Nicola Sturgeon! (She can still fuck off though odious little twerp that she is)

Wonder if uber feminist to her fingertips Nicola will soon start saying her cunning plan all along was to highlight the attack on women's rights. Nothing would surprise me with Nicola.

I SHOWER DAILY

teawamutu · 18/01/2023 18:45

A whole episode of News Agents (Maitlis and co) given over to it, too, and in a pretty balanced way (although did include Katy Montgomerie taking the Schrödinger's GRR approach: a minor amendment that it was literal genocide to block).

I'd love to know if this is going as Nicola had hoped it would?

Datun · 18/01/2023 18:50

Yes ArabellaScott!

Who remembers, 'transwomen are women, no debate.'

YES, debate. Mate.

And like mumsnet, all these people are on the journey. They start off at Terminal Be Kind, alight at Station Hang on a Minute, and arrive at destination What the Fuck are you Talking About, You Misogynistic Arse.

FlamingoCroquet · 18/01/2023 18:57

It's just a shame it's being positioned as nasty English tories attack valiant lefty Scots.

Swissmountains · 18/01/2023 19:04

I remember the dark old days when we couldn't even post on here and say what we were all thinking, we were not allowed to speak - without being banned because it was 'transphobic'
It was a great moment on MN when that changed.

Sunlight is now flooding the airwaves and it brings me such joy.
Not because I don't like trans people, but because it restores my faith and confidence in common sense.
It restores my faith that so many people are willing to put themselves on the line to keep our daughters safe.

It is now the biggest movement that is elevating the message - that you don't give away the rights of a genuine vulnerable group and hand them back to the men that oppress them. It really is simple as that. We are no better than the Taliban if that is how we are going to have to live. In fact one could argue at least Afghan women don't have to fight for their own changing rooms and loos, at least their safety if not their education is taken seriously.

I absolutely love this! The journey we've all been on, the stations we can all describe!

ArabellaScott · 18/01/2023 21:24

I reckon we could do a Tube Map of the journey.

BellaAmorosa · 18/01/2023 21:28

Sall Grover has tweeted a similar journey plan.
