Gripping stuff. Unfortunately I've missed the 1st 30 minutes, and I'm hoping I can catch up.

The level of debate is no better than on Twitter. Depressing.

Oh, that's a rather truncated link. Miriam Cates' speech. And L Russell Moyle.

Appalonia · 17/01/2023 17:28

Well that ended quickly! Was there an outcome? Confused...

oldwomanwhoruns · 17/01/2023 17:29

Voting?

AutumnCrow · 17/01/2023 17:29

Alan Brown (SNP): deliberately comparing trans people with predators.

There's a very sinister undertone to MPs in Parliament who will not accept the basic tenets of safeguarding, hiding behind this veil of 'concern'.

Remember when English people used to say : why can't we have leaders like Sturgeon and Mhairi Black?

No, me neither.

ArabellaScott · 17/01/2023 17:35

I can't believe the Speaker didn't hold Lloyd Russell-Moyle in contempt for his tie alone.

LizzieSiddal · 17/01/2023 17:35

How can they say with a straight face that their bill does not affect women or girls in any way?

Are they lying or stupid?

ArabellaScott · 17/01/2023 17:36

Are they lying or stupid?

Yes.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 17/01/2023 17:38

So good the NS is using this as a political football as even This Morning discussed it today.

It was the first time I remember them discussing trans issues.

It was also the first time that Sonia (who is left wing) and Nick Ferrari (who is right wing) agreed on everything.

justasking111 · 17/01/2023 17:38

What does rabid gammon mean?

Craig Mackinlay talks about naivety.

I used to work with him. He is a very clever guy. I don't agree with all his views though.

Lloyd's gone postal

Russell-Moyle? He was born postal, afaict.

This LRM? The one who used a family tragedy without permission, to score points and advocate for children being taught about autoerotic asphyxiation??

Shocked I tell you. Shocked.

hansard.parliament.uk/Commons/2022-06-30/debates/a6bb80d9-ac09-4455-9162-604f032a60fb/WestminsterHall

"I did not plan to say this, but during the pandemic, my second cousin—a 15-year-old boy—died in a tragic accident of auto-asphyxiation. It devastated the family, as can be imagined, and happened in the pandemic when we were only allowed six people at the funeral. If he had been taught about risky sex acts—he was 15, not a pre-pubescent child—and how to make sure he did things safely, rather than just learning something from the internet that then led to the end of his life, he might still be around and his family might not be devastated. So, actually, because of that personal experience I do have a problem with saying that we should not teach any of this to our children."

I'm watching catchup. Just had to drop in to say Miriam Cates was so so impressive.

HipTightOnions · 17/01/2023 17:50

I'm worried by section 4 of the Statement of Reasons posted earlier.

It seems to be saying pretty unequivocally that a GRC legally "changes someone's sex" for all purposes, no exceptions at all.

She really was! Shame it was followed by that blistering fool nearly self combusti ng with the 'transphobia ' of standing up for women and girls...

Snowshower · 17/01/2023 17:51

Can someone explain what the vote means?

JoodyBlue · 17/01/2023 17:53

@HipTightOnions yes, that is my understanding (not a legal person though). Seems to be saying a GRC changes sex. In which case, protected characteristic of sex has to include trans women for all purposes. No more legal possibility of women only groups for any purpose.

KatMcBundleFace · 17/01/2023 17:56

Rosie Duffield. Fucking love her.

That is what the GRA says, all purposes - except if it stops a man inheriting a title obviously

MorvenOfMalvern · 17/01/2023 17:58

Miriam Cates for Leader!

What on earth was he honestly hearing that was transphobic? She was so clear to say this was about predators not trans people and he just misrepresented that straight from the off.

I have never agreed this much with Tory MPs on anything .. but the Labour lot are just embarrassing. Charlotte Nichols comes across a really dim.

Voting?

I hope not it sounds like the majority left the chamber

KatMcBundleFace · 17/01/2023 18:03

Russell Moyle, gives me the creeps.

She was linking people CHANGING THEIR NAMES /"GENDER" to exploit loopholes.

Men like him clearly don't care about safeguarding.

SinnerBoy · 17/01/2023 18:04

ArabellaScott · Today 17:27

Ooh dear, his fake anger was a thing to behold. By a thing to behold, I mean pathetic and ridiculous. M Cates held her ground well, didn't she?
