Listening to James O'brien today

He actually talked about the GRR today although he did his usual long winded lecture before hand.

Basically the impression I got was that he doesn't want to say that woman are lying about their fears about single sex spaces.

But there was absolutely no compassion, no understanding, just a fear of telling woman they are lying.

Then not 1 caller that followed was female (or trans) and it was clear where he stood. It was appalling to here actually and he should be ashamed of himself. His hatred for the Tories means that he is not capable of reason in certain areas.

I did enjoy listening to JOB during the Brexit debates, probably because he was saying what I wanted to hear.

He talked about the Met Police beforehand and was very understanding to female callers.

So why does he never give woman a voice on this topic, or when he does he ridicules them?

I hope Shelagh talks about it today, although she is female so it's harder for her to cover this topic due to the levels of abuse she will get from men.

JOB the guy who claimed he didn't know what a social contagion was when a caller was talking about girls self identifying as boys/non-binary.
Apparently he used to self identify as a journalist so you'd think he would have heard of it.

The caller was Kellie-Jay Keen aka Posie Parker. O'Brien was an absolute toad to her

The culture of those schools is like gang culture. O'Brien has talked about being abused at school, and I believe him.

Just as gangs sometimes rape members as part of the initiation, creating rage and humiliation and a deep desire to stop that happening again, public schools and the independent schools that mimic them use emotional cruelty and class based divide and rule, even when they don't go down the traditional physical (and sometimes sexual) abuse route. They produce damaged men who have to express dominance to save themselves from admitting their own weaknesses.

The British media are full of them - see O'Brien, Clarkson - so many of them. fair play to Prince Harry for getting therapy.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 17/01/2023 14:59

ps, they get taught 'charm' aka manipulation as well - it's another way from the weak to appease the strong and survive the ordeal (women often have to go down that route). It can be delightful, but never trust it.

Lottapianos · 17/01/2023 15:06

But he's The World's Biggest Feminist, don't you know?! Honestly, he's got actual DAUGHTERS and everything! 🙄

He's an absolute muppet. As others have said, he's cowardly, spineless, self-satisfied, a bully and an egomaniac. And he's also the stopped clock that's right twice a day, just NOT on this issue

Popcorneater · 17/01/2023 16:27

O’Brien is an odious twat. I cannot listen to him, his arrogance is off the scale.

RubyTrees · 17/01/2023 17:54

I've only listened to his show once, he was so up himself I couldn't bear to listen again.

@BoreOfWhabylon the way he treated KJK in that video was disgraceful.

RaininginDarling · 17/01/2023 18:04

I put him in the same category as John Oliver: sanctimonious, smug, posh boys who use their luxury beliefs to assert their sense of superiority over the great unwashed. I suspect neither of them are capable of engaging with women as equals. Still, as long as they get to shoot fish in a media barrel, they get to feel all 'right side of history' without actually doing anything meaningful.

Lottapianos · 17/01/2023 18:20

'I put him in the same category as John Oliver: sanctimonious, smug, posh boys who use their luxury beliefs to assert their sense of superiority over the great unwashed'

Oh god, John Oliver 🤦🏻‍♂️ I used to enjoy him on The Daily Show, but I find his own show pretty unbearable

Goldshelfie · 17/01/2023 19:04

I remember listening to that interview at the time and it put me right off him. I used to like him but he is insufferably smug and arrogant, I cannot listen to him at all any more. I’m tempted to listen back to today’s show but it might just annoy me too much!

Did anyone listen to Tom Swarbrick yesterday talking to Maggie Chapman? He gets it, and she came across as completely insane.

Lottapianos · 17/01/2023 19:38

'Did anyone listen to Tom Swarbrick yesterday talking to Maggie Chapman? He gets it, and she came across as completely insane.'

He does get it. Heard a clip of that interview and yes, she sounded thoroughly batshit. Not a bad thing for lots of people to hear that though - the whole issue is batshit

ThisGirlNever · 17/01/2023 20:09

I like Tom Swarbrick.

Shiraztonight · 17/01/2023 20:17

Tom Swarbrick gets it and he covers the topic quite frequently, hasn't done his career any harm with him now in a prime time slot. Can't stand JOB and now turn over when he comes on

simplesimply · 17/01/2023 22:26

I used to listen to him until I could no longer stand his 20 minute monologue at the start of every hour of his show.
He always goes on about how he used to be a pompous twat who never considered other people's opinions and he disrespected women because he was so conservative.
He doesn't realise that he's still a pompous twat who doesn't consider other people's

Posted before I finished typing.
He still doesn't listen to their people's opinions and he still disrespects women but he now does that from a woke, left wing angle and somehow that makes it alright.
Honestly he respects women about as much as Piers Morgan does.

RaininginDarling · 17/01/2023 22:39

Same here @Lottapianos

Cuppasoupmonster · 17/01/2023 22:45

He’s a coward. And a smug one at that.

Tom Swarbrick is fantastic, however. Clearly has a grasp of the issues as does Shelagh Fogarty.

ramonaquimby · 17/01/2023 23:10

omg. Totally agree with this. JOB bingo anyone?!
the book what he wrote
private schooling
Whatever podcast he’s doing
denigrating women
fawning to whatever is the most popular opinion

am Embarrassed to say I listen far too often (only in the car!) bad habit. I get so cross and turn back to heart 80s 😁

Tripofalifetime343 · 17/01/2023 23:32

I used to enjoy his shows about Brexit because as a pp said, there wasn’t really anyone else laying out the facts or discussing it openly.

What I can’t stand though is when he is so rude to people that disagree with him and he does that odious “oh dear dear we are stupid today aren’t we?”. Even when I agree with him I don’t like to listen to people being humiliated live on air. It’s so boorish and egotistical.

He sometimes reminds me of a know-it-all undergraduate on their first holiday back home from university.

It’s such a shame as he hosted some good discussions about Party Gate. I haven’t listened to him on the trans issue but will do so now.

Tripofalifetime343 · 17/01/2023 23:34

I’ll also give Tom Swarbrick a go.

JOBisasmugprick · 17/01/2023 23:42

@ramonaquimby ^this.

He has two teenage daughters, a wife and we’re supposed to believe he has absolutely no qualms about this subject? Plus recently boasting about going to a fancy boozy lunch with Chris Evans (another self congratulatory twat) with Steve Allen, a man who trolled a teenage girl on strictly for her weight? Not really getting the Dad thing he pats himself on the back so often about.

I also do not understand how he gets away with promoting his own books/website so much on air. It’d be like Holly Willoughby constant plugging her Poundland Goop website on This morning thinking no one has noticed or the viewers are too moronic to realise.

He lauded Carl Beech, the convicted liar who ruined the reputation of many innocent men. He never apologised for actually ‘being wrong’. Went on to write a book ‘How to be right’. And also lauding Brendan Cox who turned out to be a sex pest. He appears to be the only boy at Ampleforth who ‘saw nothing’ when plenty of his peers were reporting abuse. The hypocrisy of the man is something else.

And the really breathtaking one.. trashing the Daily Mail every day. The paper he used to review video games for and write a column about. Presumably for money.

He has become a bitter parody of himself with his hatred of the stories and lack of understanding about what a great deal of people in the country actually think. He blew the chance at the Newsnight presenting gig by nailing his brexit colours to the wrong mast and breaking the rule of political journalism by openly declaring which side he was on. I have no doubt his daily rants contributed to the Brexit win given his skewed and unbalanced approach to it. Laura Kunnesberg he is not.

oh, and this week, suddenly a massive H&M sympathiser. He has no idea what went on. No one outside that family does but I’m bloody sure if JOB’s sister starting selling details of his own family’s dirty laundry he’d have something to say about it, and it probably wouldn’t be #bekind.

Unsurprisingly I do not listen to him. Love Tom Swarbrink. Can’t wait for the day they fuck JOB off and give the gig to the intellectually superior Theo Usherwood. They’ll get me back as a listener for that slot.

(I’m not Mrs underwood by the way!)

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 18/01/2023 00:59

One of the many depressing aspects of the gender debate is the number of superficially progressive men who are affronted by women disagreeing with them. They are genuinely surprised that women don’t just do as we are told by them.

You only have to scratch these woke dude bros a millimetre deep to expose a good old-fashioned misogynist.

Postsynapticdensity · 18/01/2023 18:47

He kept me sane during peak Brexit. He always holds this government to account. My political views are aligned pretty much to his.

But he makes some huge booboos now and then... but I think he does it when he doesnt trust his instinct...for example, he should have known better than to praise Hancock at the beginning of the pandemic, we all knew he was lying from the very start (about care homes etc..)...but he admits he was so terrified of thinking that the pandemic was being handled by people who really didnt have a clue, that he tried very hard to believe in Hancock (or something like that..)

I think he is making the same mistake here...he has teenage daughters, he "must" know deep down this is problematic...but he doesnt want to touch it with a bargepole, so he is finding reasons to justify that there are no women in the best artist category of a prestigious music award..because its unfair on sam smith who identifies as binary to not fit in either category..and he even has a music professor explaining how hard it was to get teenage girls into music in school (as they flocked to drama lessons instead) and they both agree at the end that we dont need categories and this is the way things are going..it was pathetic

I used to listen to his brexit rants religiously, but his stance on harry and meghan (the press is evil and they are lovely people) and the trans issue really puts me off nowadays.

Abccde · 18/01/2023 19:35

I actually stopped listening to him a couple of years ago as I found him more and more self obsessed and couldn't face his diatribes whilst shaming callers who often had just not managed to put their point across in the most effective way.

But yesterday I thought he must cover this. And he did, but terrible badly.

Listened to Shelagh Fogharty today and I thought she did extremely well, which probably means she is going to get a lot of TRA abuse. They won't have liked it.

OP posts:
Cherry60 · 18/01/2023 20:57

Shelagh Fogarty is consistently excellent, on the trans issue and other issues, all without the pathetic ego trip of O'Brien.

canyoutellemehowtoget · 18/01/2023 21:02

JOB went to the same all boys public school that a hideously sexist faux-leftie psychotherapist I had the misfortune to work with went to as well and they're all cut from the same cloth IMO.

Raging about their privelege and screaming about the marginalised while struggling to disguise their raging misogyny. Grim.
