Just noticed a tweet to say Helen is on at 7.20 this morning with India - discussing Scottish GRR.

HJ is starting to break through to the mainstream. This is excellent news

Yes, I agree. I gave a friend her book recently; friend has since passed it on.

I'm pretty sure I heard IW saying 'no one apart from trans people know what it's like to be trans' which I accept, but I find this to be at odds with people who are not female claiming that they know what it is to be female.

Yes. If people were claiming trans status rather than female status then there wouldn't be an issue.

bellinisurge - here is a link to the Jonathan Reynolds interview. I do think Labour are moving on rhis issue.

Ben Bradshaw is appalling on this though. Has come out really strongly in support of NS and Scotland's terrifying decision making and then doubled down when challenged. There's a thread somewhere.

KS only yesterday was framing it in terms of the indignities to TW and not even mentioning women and their concerns. There's a lot of change needed before I feel even a twinge of optimism.

bellinisurge · 16/01/2023 09:05

Cheers @Violetparis - I think they are too. A bit. But the splinters in their arses from fence sitting on women's rights must be smarting

Helleofabore · 16/01/2023 09:17

Is Willoughby being deliberately brought on now to show the lack of foundations to the discussion points and the dishonesty of some of the points? Willoughby is out there on twitter telling everyone that males on oestrogen are the same as females after 2 years. And this is Willoughby who dishonestly calls themselves a 'female'.

Not only that, they have been shown to display male aggression and force people to kiss them on TV, tweets abhorrent tweets, yet is still booked to come onto media.

If I were Willoughby, I would be suspicious.

LizzieSiddal · 16/01/2023 09:22

I caught this, very predictably India tried to dodge any “difficult” questions “what would happen in single sex schools”, Suzanna brilliantly brought India back to answer that specific question. Helen was brilliant.

I also caught Shami Chakrabarti on R4 this am, agreeing that, whilst she agreed in principle with new SNP law, she thinks it would be in conflict with the Equality Act and the Government would be right to send it for a review!

Yes there are plenty of GC voices they could have booked, I think if Helen was a deliberate first choice and it wasn't simply a matter of availability, it does look as if someone behind the scenes knew what's what.

bellinisurge · 16/01/2023 09:29

IW is so poor but maybe it's like hauling out that paedophile apologist Tatchell for every so called LGBTQ+ issue (which seems to include women's rights in the alphabet soup. Just too lazy editorially (or too scared) to get anyone other than a familiar sound bite merchant

Shani Chakrabati's comments on the radio this morning is significant.

Just caught the end of an interview with Jonathan Reynolds, Labour MP on Sky News. He said Labours position was to keep single sex spaces in line with the Equality Act. That's the clearest I've heard a Labour MP speak on this issue. He definitely said single sex rather than safe spaces.

Not wishing to derail this thread which is about Helen Joyce on Good Morning Britain but I think we have to be careful with getting optimistic with this 'single sex spaces' talk. It became obvious with the Scottish GRR discussions that MSPs could say quite truthfully that it would not affect single sex spaces because they are secure in the knowledge that trans people have been using the spaces of their preference already. Therefore, no effect, trans people continue to use the spaces they have always used.

If Labour are saying they will protect single sex spaces I want to know how. How do you protect a female single sex space whilst simultaneously giving any man who wants one a new birth certificate that says he is female. I'm afraid my conclusion is that the single sex space being protected is one that is based on 'legal sex' and therefore includes people of both biological sexes.

Now where is someone with a link to this Helen Joyce segment!!

ArabellaScott · 16/01/2023 09:33

'ConfusedWorker1 added: “India Willoughby holding up her passport on live television to prove that she’s a woman and not a man is by far the most stupid thing I’m going to see all week, and it’s 7:30am on a Monday.”'

beastlyslumber · 16/01/2023 09:38

LOL what an silly thing to do!

Helleofabore · 16/01/2023 09:39

It is not up yet. Either on GMB catch up or twitter. A million fingers are pressing refresh.

Gcfemale · 16/01/2023 09:48

@InterestingUsernameTBC I also am slightly skeptical, when they refer to single sex spaces, does that mean biological single sex or legal single sex with anyone who has paid £5 for a certificate?

bellinisurge · 16/01/2023 09:49

Wow, if Shami Chakrabati is saying it, that sounds like they are softening people up for something.
But this "99% of women are biological women" won't work.
Labour needs to say:
There are a small number of men who are legally women but they are still properly excluded from single sex spaces. We can look at what public money should be spent on third spaces but stay the fuck out of any single sex space for women.

Gcfemale · 16/01/2023 09:50

So depressing that we now have to qualify everything with biological as we can't say woman, mother, sex, female without there being alternative definitions confusing issues

My issue with Labour is the 'how'.

How do they propose to reform the GRA and maintain protections for women.
Until they provide details on how they see this working and how they will deal with potential conflicts I'm still not convinced.

I also need to know that when labour use words like single sex, women etc these have the same meaning as mine. I'm not sure that is always the case.

bellinisurge · 16/01/2023 09:54

While they are so keen on reducing the humiliation of tbe current GRC process, perhaps they could do something about tbe process by which disabled people get any benefits. Far more humiliating.
Is that whataboutary? You fucking well bet your arse it is. Don't care.

The problem with this formulation is that since the Court of Sessions judgement in Scotland before Christmas the meaning of ‘sex’ in the Equality Act has been ruled to be ‘legal sex’ not biological sex. Your legal sex is the sex recorded on your birth certificate so people of the female sex includes for the Equality Act people of the male sex who hold a GRC which the GRR bill would give out to anyone who wants one. So whilst saying you will protect single sex spaces in line with the Equality Act sounds reassuring it means nothing unless it is qualified as biological sex.

100%.

They've tried the fudge before of 'yes, we will protect single sex spaces and transwomen are womensex' with the latter part said really fast so hopefully nobody notices.

How about the humiliation of women having to describe and spell out the reasons why they don't want to share spaces with males?

I never wanted to describe the biological issues involved in using certain spaces, or the reasons I or others may want a single sex space. I never wanted to recount or revisit abuse, assault, trauma. Many religious women have no desire to expose themselves to racist judgement by discussing their personally held beliefs.

Why doesn't women's dignity count for fucking anything?

👏This

bellinisurge · 16/01/2023 10:00

@ArabellaScott , you are missing my point. They are so keen to reduce the "humiliation" of the GRC process but don't give a shiny shit about disabled people. And if I raise this it is dismissed as whataboutary.
And yes, they don't give a shit about humiliating women either
