Gendered hair, the struggle is real

Do we think that Metro is secretly gender critical? They keep publishing absolutely whingefests that really do not show the TQ in a good light at all.

Now of cause everyone should be able to have the hair cut they want..... it is just gender stereotypes after all. But I can't help laughing at the delicate ones crashing into the real world 👇

metro.co.uk/2023/01/15/going-to-the-barbers-as-an-lgbtq-person-means-hiding-my-identity-18080558/

Favourite bits:

"For me, short hair was what I’d longed for, and was symbolic of me becoming a man,’ he says.
Trans people make a lot of changes – both big and small – to feel a sense of trans joy. Hair, after all, is one of the first things people see.
But his first haircut when he came out was not just about choosing scissors or clippers – it was about feeling inner peace."

"Harry now goes to a mixed-gender hairdresser who treats his hair ‘gently and allows me to talk about my life, gender and my partner’."

Talking about your gender eh? Makes a change from "where are you going on your holibobs luv?". Let's ALL talk about our gender next time we are in the hairdressers... it'll go down so well! We all have inner peace after a good hair cut though, so I hear them on that.

Then we get to Eden, who works,
SHOCKINGLY in the charity sector and has a lot of pronouns. Confusingly all mixed up in the article.
"Eden, 27, who is transfeminine and works in the charity sector, says xe can’t use any old barbers as she has to out herself as trans."

Next we find out about the 😱 horror of having to book a "gents" cut when you're non binary.

Finally we get to David, who's had to be vague about their partners pronouns.
Because some women were once a bit mean when he was listening in on their conversations at the hairdressers .
😱😱😱

I'm going to hold all these people in my prayers.

I’ve just notice the xe/xem pronouns - which my phone doesn’t recognise.

One of them complains about the barbers being heteronormative. Basically saying they have to change to suit him? Why should they?

😂 at your final paragraph. How dare the barber!

GenderCriticalTrumpets · 16/01/2023 08:43

I wish I could post a photo of my husbands face when I read this out complete with the pronoun "xe". Incredible

AlisonDonut · 16/01/2023 08:57

I am a middle aged woman and the local hairdressers that I'd been using for years refused to cut my hair short [the owner was on maternity leave]. So I went to Toni and Guys. There's Toni and Guys in most towns and they are ultra woke, so it shouldn't be hard to get reaffirmation.

These days we use my OH's buzzers, well I do most of it and he tidies it up for me. No 6 on top and 5 on the sides.

midgetastic · 16/01/2023 09:04

I do think it's wrong that barbers can refuse to cut women's hair in a style that they cut for men

Minimalme · 16/01/2023 09:11

I go to the barbers to get my hair cut. I like the drop in appointment, speed and price.

I am clearly female and have never had any issues/refusals. Only ever been treated respectfully. It's often a bit of a laugh.

All this having to be treated specially, listened too and understood, probably makes barbers want to transition to a different job altogether.

I don't. I think hairdressers that cater for men have the right to cater for men.

What I think should happen is that hairdressers that cater for women expand their skills to cater for women who want short hair. They did it fine in the 80s.

SockGoddess · 16/01/2023 09:27

Yes heteronormative Hmm Being heterosexual is fairly normal, but more to the point, people like those in the article desperately want to be anything but normal, so what's the problem?

WarningToTheCurious · 16/01/2023 10:09

So the article is basically “people find a hairdresser / barber they like and are willing to travel a few miles to get there”. Whoop-de-do.

I’ve had barbers and hairdressers do my hair in the past (depending on the length / style). I can honestly say that I’ve only ever had one bad clipper cut and I swear to god DH will never be let loose on my hair again.

Teatime55 · 16/01/2023 10:25

I have a friend who was regularly turned away from barbers in the 90s/2000. She literally doesn’t care about her hair as long as it’s short. She hates salons as they want to ‘style’ it.
She moaned about it and then found a different barbers. It’s what adults do.

I hate this idea that private businesses have to change everything to suit individuals needs. Not based on access needs of course, just on someone’s feelings.
Its like me walking into a Chinese and saying I want some Italian food.

I HATE the hairdressers. Always have. I suck it up and get the basic cut done and leave. I particularly hate the mirrors. But I suck it up and luckily my hairdresser is coming to the house at the moment so I don’t have to suffer too much. But when she is back in the salon I will follow her and put up with it.

Athenen0ctua · 16/01/2023 10:28

MorvenOfMalvern · 16/01/2023 08:32

Do you have to get behind the wheel and drive there though? That's what makes this newsworthy...because people going out of their way to return to a salon they've clicked with is a sign of something apparently...

No, I just walk into town. It's the first one I tried, no issues so have been going back for the last 18 months. If one had turned me away I'd just have tried another. I don't believe you'd have to drive to the next town unless you lived somewhere very small. I just get a standard haircut, no fuss, no wanting to chat about what stereotypes I do or do not conform to or any of that. I'm just there to get a haircut.

Athenen0ctua · 16/01/2023 10:30

Unless you travel for work, a barber is not something you need to find wherever you go so it doesn't matter if say half of them didn't cut women's hair.

DaisyCornflowerBlue · 16/01/2023 11:31

I think it's unnecessarily complicated.

My mother in law, in her 70s gets me to clipper cut to a number one, or she goes to the barbers on senior citizen day.

Only one barber has ever objected so she just told him she'll visit his competition down the road.

She the old-fashioned straight white lady.

These q*r types (God I hate that word) are all narcs. Creating drama out of nothing.

Athenen0ctua · 16/01/2023 12:52

@DaisyCornflowerBlue I agree, it does seem like some of these people just want drama. The article talks about being turned away for gender or sexual identity, my barber knows neither of these things about me, unless I advertised it how would they? Being misgendered, well unless you announce to please say 'sir' and 'he', they are not mind readers. Unless you start calling all short haired women 'he'!

Januarysux · 15/01/2023 14:52

Can i get a cheaper haircut if I identify as a man?

I always identify a a man for the duration of my hair appointment. It's much cheaper.

Don't tell TRA'S that your phone didn't recognize xe/xem. That implies that your phone is hetero/cis normative and the only appropriate action is to cancel the brand and operating system and burn the thing. There will promptly be a protest outside your home because it is also partially your fault for not typing the pronoun enough for your phone to memorize it. The outrage!

The problem is the barber didn't immediately apologize for assuming that they were cis, roll out a red carpet, provide a fully on the house therapy session with a box of tissues included, massage their feet, do their nails, full make up with GUYLINER (because they won't feel affirmed by the make up unless it's specifically packaged and marketed to men), provide a full outfit tailored to their needs, play a song sung by and produced by a member of the LGBTQ+, hold a coronation ceremony (sorry too soon?) and suck their... Sorry xer... whatever xer calling it... And juggle plates while praising xer bravery for being completely cringe.

EmpressaurusOfWitchesBackFromTheDead · 16/01/2023 16:55

To be fair, I’d be quite annoyed if someone assumed I was cis. Because it’s such a stupid concept.

Athenen0ctua · 16/01/2023 18:25

If I'm called madam or similar I don't take it as anyone assuming anything about my identity or personality, they can just see that I'm clearly female and so not a sir!

Thesealsknowsheismagic · 16/01/2023 18:37

This is so strange. Both me and my adult daughter have or hair all lengths. From shaved to bra strap length and never found a barbers or hair dresser that refuses to do it. My daughter is also a lesbian. Never had an issue with people cutting her hair due to her sexuality.

and yet, their survey claims large portions of LBGT people are refused service? Would love to see how they picked people for their survey and all the data behind it.

BlackForestCake · 16/01/2023 20:09

Clearly a mullet is what they should have chosen

If you identify as a citizen of East Germany in 1987 is the haircut still subsidised by the state?

whereaw · 16/01/2023 20:18

How about we all vocally shout about how we are gender neutral women. As in adult females with no specific gender because gender isn't a thing that actually exists?

Gender neutral women. What a concept! I might roll with this.

phlebasconsidered · 16/01/2023 20:30

I've always had very short hair as a woman. Not because of gender ID but because of medical issues that cause major or total hair loss frequently. It's just easier to deal with.

I basically have a short back and sides for which my son pays 7 quid. Not only do hairdressers charge me more for the same cut, but they fuck it up as well by not doing a fade or cut properly. Unfortunately, barbers often refuse to so me or they charge me on a female hair scale which costs more even though my condition means i basically have fuck all hair.

I did buy clippers myself but i'm really shite at the back of my head.

Just give me a barber cut ffs. It doesn't matter that i'm a balding 50 year old woman. It's not all about various sexual rights. It's also about menopausal lady with fucked up hair rights. Just pack it in.

My hair believes I am a member of Led Zeppelin, c. 1971. Where's my flag?
