I don't know how I forgot her!

She's an amazing advocate for Women's rights and a really interesting writer.

RoyalCorgi · 14/01/2023 20:26

I'd agree with all those really excellent recommendations. Can I particularly recommend Jane Harris? She's not as well known as she should be, but she's a great writer - her books are real page-turners.

RoyalCorgi · 14/01/2023 20:50

Oh, and how could I forget? Lissa Evans is one of my favourite writers, and 100% gender-critical. She's really funny on Twitter. Also, she used to be a producer on Father Ted.

Do read the trilogy that consists of Old Baggage, Crooked Heart and V for Victory.

The other great one is Their Finest Hour and a Half, which was made into a film with Gemma Arterton and Bill Nighy.

MrsBigTed · 14/01/2023 22:52

Possibly not outright GC, but certainly supportive of JK (I just don't know), but Zadie Smith and Aminatta Forna are on my list of authors to try

triedeyes · 14/01/2023 23:19

Lionel Shriver?

NomadG · 15/01/2023 07:25

Thanks for the replies .....ordered some from the library!

Be careful not to confuse Jane Harris with JOanne Harris of Chocolat “fame”, amongst other issues…

FrancescaContini · 15/01/2023 08:06

I nearly bought a book by Hadley Freeman yesterday…she recently left the Guarniad.

Actually, writing this has made me want to go back and buy it.

fratellia · 15/01/2023 08:09

Kate Long

Onjali Rauf, although think she has only written children’s books (which are great, my DC has them!)

Definitely. Joanne Harris is a complete bitch. She blocked me on Twitter because I called her out as a bully.

If I was buying for children, I'd also avoid Clare Vulliamy. I'm really disappointed by her because she's the daughter of the lovely Shirley Hughes. But she's treated GC authors like Rachel Rooney really badly.

I was shocked to find out how toxic the world of publishing, especially children's books, is.

NomadG · 15/01/2023 09:58

I think children's publishing is generally not in a good state....I would estimate 80% of the books in my libraries children's section are by "celebrity " authors.

The adult books I have read by a celebrity are few..because they have been so bad. Its a worrying trend that we dumb down children's books.

I second Onjali Rauf. My nieces and nephews love her books.

SapphosRock · 15/01/2023 10:39

Joan Smith

NecessaryScene · 15/01/2023 20:02

Richard (K) Morgan - outspoken enough on the subject he got banned from Twitter very fast, and apparently still isn't back.

spartanrunnergirl · 15/01/2023 20:22

Lissa Evans author of the wonderful Crooked Heart

Oops - didn't see this!

Is Gillian Phillip GC? That's good to hear

Gilluan Philip had her career trashed for being GC. She ended up retraining as an HGV driver.

Such a shame. She's a talented, thoughtful writer, and she was a gem in a genre that is dissolving into a mushy sou!

crispinglovershighkick · 16/01/2023 00:00

Selina Todd has written a book about Shelagh Delaney that I'm looking forward to reading.
