Everything I've read about Emma D'Arcy has made me eyeroll hard enough to injure myself, but I think this time I may have done permanent damage.

www.yahoo.com/entertainment/house-dragon-emma-darcy-says-010622755.html

Emma can't help but notice that Emma found success only after Emma stopped "pretending" to be a woman, and isn't it "beautifully ironic" that Emma got nominated for a best actress award.

Oh and no fancy frock for Emma because Emma is non-binary. Emma was "doing trans", because Emma wore trousers and a skirt at the same time. "And nothing says non-binary like wearing both a skirt and trousers." My mind is blown - not only did I lose all sense of style in the noughties when I wore dresses over jeans, I actually cast off the shackles of womanhood too!

How on earth did we walk back into the 1950s gender roles? What, in the wider society, caused the idea that gender stereotypes are essential while biological sex is something on a spectrum and perhaps socially created? What happened to the lessons of the second wave of feminism?

Theeyeballsinthesky · 12/01/2023 20:35

What is it with tedious navel gazing actresses called emma?

Emma Corrin calls for gender neutral acting awards

Wellies54 · 12/01/2023 20:48

@LurkyMcLurkLurk I thought you were being sarcastic when you wrote 'nothing says non-binary like wearing a skirt and trousers' - but then I read the article! This could be a new trend; 'nothing says non-binary like shaving your legs but not your armpits ' or wearing one stiletto and one trainer ...

IcakethereforeIam · 12/01/2023 20:55

If Emma was truly nonbinary, she'd have angrily turned down the award and ugly cried about it invalidating her identity.

The Muslim girls I went to school with had to wear trousers and skirts because they were girls. If their fathers had realised this actually made their daughters nonbinary, would have been a bit of a catch22 situation.

NotRightNowNo · 12/01/2023 21:01

Non binary. Golly Emma must be interesting and edgy.

Walrussy · 12/01/2023 21:07

I think nothing says non-binary like "posh (or at least middle class) and a bit thick" rather than trousers and skirt.
I also wonder how they had the cheek to take a woman's role when they evidently have no lived experience as a woman.

CheeseMuffin · 12/01/2023 21:18

Emma also has a bearded partner called Thomas. No idea how Thomas identifies but Emma is definitely definitely not a straight woman.

My turn:
Nothing says non-binary like eating a Yorkie while wearing a ball gown.
Nothing says non-binary like wearing dangly earrings and drinking pints.
Nothing says non-binary like scratching your arse while soaking in a scented bubble bath.

If I'd only known that spot welding in a tutu would solve all my problems and cast off my shackles...

oh ffs, who has time for this kind of idiocy?

Lurkerlot · 12/01/2023 21:49

She acts a good female in her HOD role.

Lurkerlot · 12/01/2023 21:50
  • female character
puffyisgood · 12/01/2023 22:09

yeah, y'know, she's a woman who's not at all comfortable with 'female stereotypes', so she uses another word for herself, a made-up one... this strikes me as silly in a 30 year old but nowhere near as bad as grown men insisting that they're something/some word that has already been taken for many centuries.

I think I'm going to try all of those! Not sure they'll change my 'gender' though!

It did occur to me after reading the other thread about the Brits:

Nothing says Non-binary AFAB like 'I'm non-binary but thank you soooo much for my award for best actress'
Nothing says non-binary AMAB like 'I'm non-binary ad am soooo excluded by your out dated male/female categories, you must make everything gender neutral just for me'

BringerOfDoom · 12/01/2023 22:34

Now gender identity is a strategy.

With the exception of Yorkie but other type of cheap chocolate types apply...
Have done all of these and still female.

Although, in truth, I don't often find the need to scratch my arse. Maybe I'm blessed.

teawamutu · 13/01/2023 09:20

I thought I'd got confused and there was only one posh twit called Emma wanging on about not being a woman while playing female roles (incidentally, is this not something of a no-no? Or does that only apply one-way? #rhetorical).

scratchedbymycat · 13/01/2023 09:32

Fucks sake, I'm so angry today. Like bubbling rage in my tummy. Just ranted very angrily at my husband about his lazy ass passive in the face of female oppression sex class.

I'm angry with HIM too: "Tell me what to do", he says.

"Why the fuck do I have to tell you what to do? Why can't you just see this and be angry and DO something? Did apartheid need to be explained to you, FFS!"

Now I'm crying.

Let's have all the lead roles in all the films be non binary / trans. ALL of them. And let's see what that does to the film industry and its right-on gender-fluid performers. How long will they keep earning money? How quickly will they embrace being male or female again and declare that a progressive stance. I will not further and I will not forgive.

I really hope history judges these individuals for their participation in the eradication of women.

Chersfrozenface · 13/01/2023 09:56

I have been wearing dangly earrings and drinking pints since the late 70s.

How awesomely non-binary am I. /sarcasm off

Chersfrozenface · 13/01/2023 10:03

Sorry, the sarcasm comment wasn't a pop at @LurkyMcLurkLurk but at the whole "non-binary" BS.

I am as yet uncaffeinated and consequently not firing on all cylinders.

Bestcatmum · 13/01/2023 10:04

I can understand someone being born into the wrong sex and being desperate to be a man/woman. You'd have to be to go through all the surgery and grief involved in a sex change.
But I think non binary is absolute bollocks. Its just another attention seeking piece of nonsense. I've always been into manlt things. Motorbike riding, always playing with boys when I was a kid. A right tomboy. I like to wear trousers. Can't remember the last time I dressed in a feminine way. I'm not non binary, I'm a woman and happy to be one. I dont need an attention seeking label.

SelfPortraitWithHagstone · 13/01/2023 10:13

Flowers @scratchedbymycat . It's just so exhausting to be rightfully angry all the bloody time, isn't it?

By the way I love "I will not further and I will not forgive", it's got a fantastic oratorical ring to it.

ReunitedThorns · 13/01/2023 11:00

Someone should repost the meme from the Bingo thread.

Nothing say "I have no personality" better than declaring yourself non-binary.

Musomama1 · 13/01/2023 11:13

News flash to acting Emma's, not performing femininity does not make you something in-between a male and a female.

Ohyoudodoyou · 13/01/2023 11:19

In the '80's she'd have just been a Goth and grown out of that.

msbevvy · 13/01/2023 11:29

In my youth I wore my Dad's old suit and tie and Doc Martens. I also drank many pints (when I wasn't drinking cocktails).
I was a proud member of a women's group.

I have never wanted to be anything other than a woman. Where on earth has all this gender stereotyping come from? Things have certainly gone backwards in recent years.
