Sex Matters - urgent action - email your MP! Re Scotgov's gender self ID

'The UK Government has to decide what to do about Scotland’s Gender Recognition Bill by 19th January. Email your MP today!

The Scottish Gender Recognition Reform Bill will effectively bring sex self-declaration into UK law, backed up by criminal penalties against “disclosure” of someone’s actual sex, even where it is obvious. This will have significant impacts across the UK including on the operation of the Equality Act and on the fundamental human right of freedom of expression.

The UK Government can take action to challenge this using the Scotland Act, and Alister Jack, the Secretary of State for Scotland, has indicated that he is considering all options. Kemi Badenoch, Secretary of State for International Trade and Minister for Women and Equalities, has also announced that the government plans to update the list of countries which are included within the GRA’s overseas track so that only countries which have similar criteria to the UK are included.'

thanks @ArabellaScott. Done.

DialSquare · 12/01/2023 12:59

Done

ArabellaScott · 12/01/2023 13:33

Thanks both.

'Stonewall is encouraging its supporters to write with ominous threats about “significant constitutional implications” if the UK government does not roll over and accept self-ID without any parliamentary debate.

Even if your MP is sympathetic to the idea of self-ID, you should write to them to make the argument that laws that affect the whole of the UK should only be brought in through the democratic action of Parliament. Encourage them to support the integrity of UK law-making and stand firm against Stonewall’s bullying.'

VinoDino · 12/01/2023 15:33

What if your MP is part of the Tartan Taliban (sorry nicked off Twitter) who is fully behind this? Is there any point?

Giggorata · 12/01/2023 15:42

Done it.
yes, if my MP had been captured, I would still do it, and ask how they justify their position.

VinoDino · 12/01/2023 15:55

Done. And I added my personal thoughts on at the end Smile

Yes. Always.

I'm in Scotland, we are SNP party line to the end of time in my constituency. I want them to not be able to say 'nobody ever said' without me knowing for a fact that's a lie. Plus, if they had a shred of decency, they'd understand they are supposed to work for ALL of their constituents.

ArabellaScott · 12/01/2023 16:12

Re personal thoughts: brilliant to personalise if you can - I've always tried to add them at the beginning so it's clear that the response is individualised before they dismiss it.

OP posts:
VinoDino · 12/01/2023 16:17

@ArabellaScott after I sent it I did think I should've put that at the start as they'll no doubt skim read and probably dismiss it. Oh well, at least it's there.

RhannionKPSS · 12/01/2023 16:28

As Arabella says it’s worth emailing your MSPs even if they support the bill as they can’t say “ oh we didn’t know” about the strength of feeling against it.

My MP in England is full on TWAW and has gone on record saying so. I still have written to them about the GRR so they can’t claim that no constituents have raised any concerns. I’ve asked them to support s35 as the GRR affects reserved matters. Even if they don’t agree with me they are on notice that some of their constituents are legitimately concerned about the legislation.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 12/01/2023 16:33

If you want a legal view on the impact of the GRR on the UK see the link in this thread to the Policy Exchange doc https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/4718202-legal-analysis-of-impact-of-grr-and-if-s35-can-be-used-by-policy-exchange

Done.

ScienceDragon · 12/01/2023 16:47

Done - wrote a paragraph about my personal observations on teenagers who can change their gender identity from month to month - and should be allowed to do so without forcing them into surgery.

BeatriceBatchelor · 12/01/2023 16:51

Thanks, OP, for the link.

Never in all my life did I think I'd need to send such an email.

aCupOfTeaSunday · 12/01/2023 16:55

Thank you and I want to write to my MP.
Do you mind provide a few bullet points as I am not sure how to address the issue with the right wording so it can be considered seriously. Thank you.

BeatriceBatchelor · 12/01/2023 16:57

@aCupOfTeaSunday if you follow the link in the OP, it's all there for you. Just select your MP and fill in your details.

Boiledbeetle · 12/01/2023 17:47

God this will be the third email my MP has had off me in just over a week.

A reply from him at some point would be nice! I'm not holding my breath though.
