Sex Matters - urgent action - email your MP! Re Scotgov's gender self ID

'The UK Government has to decide what to do about Scotland’s Gender Recognition Bill by 19th January. Email your MP today!

The Scottish Gender Recognition Reform Bill will effectively bring sex self-declaration into UK law, backed up by criminal penalties against “disclosure” of someone’s actual sex, even where it is obvious. This will have significant impacts across the UK including on the operation of the Equality Act and on the fundamental human right of freedom of expression.

The UK Government can take action to challenge this using the Scotland Act, and Alister Jack, the Secretary of State for Scotland, has indicated that he is considering all options. Kemi Badenoch, Secretary of State for International Trade and Minister for Women and Equalities, has also announced that the government plans to update the list of countries which are included within the GRA’s overseas track so that only countries which have similar criteria to the UK are included.'

Takes less than ten seconds (depending on your typing speed and if you know your MP's name!)

Done. Bumping for the evening crowd.

Vebrithien · 12/01/2023 19:22

Done.

My MP is stridently TWAW, but as least she can't say that all of her constituents agree with her.

I doubt she'll read it, but it was at least sent.

'bumping for the evening crowd' sounds like a song title.

Definitely a NSFW one!

Already done and this will be the second email I have sent him on this subject.

YesSheCan · 12/01/2023 20:50

Thanks @ArabellaScott. Done

Cherry60 · 12/01/2023 20:59

Done, thanks for posting. I feel nervous about outing myself to my transactivist MP and his team but this issue is too important to hide from.

OhHolyJesus · 12/01/2023 21:09

Sent mine with several 'urgent's scattered throughout and with some other personalisation.

I've written to my MP on 'gender' ideology (schools mainly) before and am confident he will support but it's a matter of acting before the deadline.

Brilliant template as you would expect from Sex Matters and I love that you can personalise on the text fields it as standard letters can be ignored or dismissed by MPs.

I know just how you feel. But take heart:

Surveys show that the majority of people support single sex spaces being protected.

The petition asking for the government to ensure the Equality Act clarifies that 'sex' means 'biological sex' has nearly 70,000 signatures, so it shouldn't be news to any MP that women all over the country feel very strongly on this issue.

That was so easy. Thank you.
Done.

I emailed my MP and he replied today! He said:

“Thanks for writing to me. I have long expressed concerns and articulated that self ID was dangerous. It is for those reasons that I opposed the legislation at Holyrood.

It does conflict with the Equalities legislation that is reserved to Westminster. It is for that reason that the Supreme Court should address this as a matter of urgency. I believe that it should be a legal not political decision and for clarity that court decision is required.”

done, thanks for posting.

I’ve written to my MP about various things over the years (primarily Brexit). This is the first time he’s replied - letter from the House of Commons dropped onto my doormat this morning from him.

Binglebong · 13/01/2023 14:26

I've got a reply - checking I'm really his constituent and wanting a phone number because he doesn't want written evidence.

Sneaky. Not sure whether it's better to talk and possibly have him be more open or to hold him to his job and get it all in writing ...

I replied and said I would prefer it in writing. I would imagine he would be in agreement though so not sure why he's being shy!

DameMaud · 13/01/2023 17:33

Thank you. Done!

AuntMunca · 13/01/2023 18:22

I've contacted my (Conservative) MP and had a short but very supportive response from him which is encouraging.

YouSetTheTone · 13/01/2023 18:44

Done. I personalised it at the top but my MP won’t be surprised to see it from me. We’ve met in person to discuss women’s rights/ gender ideology, we’ve zoomed about it, he’s had to pass on emails to Nick Gibb and also to Kemi Badenoch’s office. I sent him the Nolan Investigates Stonewall podcasts, I’ve sent him Trans by Helen Joyce and Irreversible Damage by Abigail Shrier… and many other things!
(writing all this down makes me realise it’s been quite a lot actually). He’s extremely receptive and sympathetic (and a Conservative MP) but I don’t know how effectual he is in Parliament on these matters..

ArabellaScott · 13/01/2023 23:29

Great stuff, everyone! The more support there is for WM to put a stop to the GRR, the easier it will be for the gov to act.

Done (and personalised).
