Continuation of Thread 1

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions, grr"- that sort of thing).

Boiledbeetle

I'm not sure at the crunch point I could actually do it. But I sure as hell 100% could not put my cross by Labour at the moment.

Sadly, unless there is a decent independent, I'll be spoiling mine. There's no way I could ever vote Tory, the Greens and LDs are insane and if there's Reform or whatever, I'd rather pour hot chip fat into my lap.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 30/12/2022 07:34

I think I wrote No in every box at the last election and 'Woman = Adult Human Female' across the paper. The Conservative candidate (now MP) is very TWAW, so it was, sadly, very easy to cover them all.

SqueakyDinosaur · 30/12/2022 09:29

I wrote a bit of an essay but I like the idea of a kind of hashtag.

As I understand it, candidates have the right to see every spoilt ballot (presumably in case they are potentially a vote for them) and so in marginal constituencies, at least, I'm guessing that they will be seen.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 30/12/2022 09:46

Under Covid count rules all spoiled ballots were displayed on a big screen for checking, so the whole hall saw them. Not sure if that will carry on.

Anyone know Gina Miller's stance? No mention wither way in the draft manifesto so far, so could be worth writing to them before its finalised. www.trueandfairparty.uk/political-policies

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 30/12/2022 09:47

Either.

It's.

Oh for an edit button.

I'm mildly dreading when they come asking for vote and I will have to tell th is an absolute no because women are important. How do you do that without getting into a debate? I'm not interested in debating it on my doorstep, I just want them to understand they're not getting my vote, the reason why, and that they can feel free to get lost.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 30/12/2022 09:54

It would be nice to have a proper Women's Party, but I don't think it could work even without the structural problems that occured with the WEP set up. Sexists wouldn't take it seriously; misgynists would actively oppose and undermine it; and it might as well be named the TRA Target Party.

StephanieSuperpowers · 30/12/2022 10:00

I'd still like an international coalition of women for women to get even 1% of votes across the world to demonstrate that there's a definite percentage who care about this issue.

HilarysMantelpiece · 30/12/2022 10:11

Ceri Black is such a wonderful writer isn't she- I have so much respect for her bravery, following that speech in Belfast last year.

I have a science degree in a subject that leans heavily on neuroscience. This notion that our human conception of the world is founded on language doesn't fit with the current conceptualisation of the brain, as understood in neurology.

There are so many informants of our thoughts; the sensations that we experience in the moment, our pre-linguistic experiences, the amount of light that we've been exposed to over the course of 24 hours, the food that we have eaten. That's before you ever consider culture and context, drugs, hormones etc.
While Chomsky et al have very interesting ideas about how language forms our conceptualisation, those are just ideas, with no greater or lesser importance than our ideas about (say) sensory processing.

I was just about to ask if anyone actually looks at them or does anything with them because I reckon if nothing changes there will be enough spoiled ones to make a full sized papier mache woman figure. With scarf.

If it does, they're going to need bigger screens.

Comfy chairs and popcorn. They were shown successively, not simultaneously.

My plan was to silently hand out a piece of paper with this image.

But during the last locals, the one time a canvasser came to the door I chickened out - it was a young person campaigning for Labour and I suddenly felt paranoid that our address/names would go on a Evil People To Be Purged From Society blacklist. So I just said I wouldn't be voting Labour, and when asked why, replied that "You probably wouldn't want to hear the answer."

On a separate subject - please add a message to this thread if you support the idea.

I think I saw on a thread a few weeks ago, that the SDP (who I hadn't realised were still a thing) know what a woman is. I think they field very few candidates.

Regarding slogans I started writing 'respect my sex, etc.' I got really self conscious, I seemed to be scribbling for ages. So next time I was thinking 'born not worn'.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 30/12/2022 11:24

All of you are free to tell your canvassers (after letting them know verbally or in writing that you are not voting for them and why) that 'I have been advised not to discuss this with you'. You can repeat that sentence as often as you want, and use it to answer any question or debating point they raise. You don't need to say anything further.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 30/12/2022 11:30

The 'why' can be 'because I am a woman and your party has chosen not to represent women'.

Slothtoes · 30/12/2022 11:40

I like for a nice direct slogan that I saw on here
‘Keep your penis out of the Ladies’
.. up to you if you want to add a possessive apostrophe on the end of that or not Grin

StephanieSuperpowers · 30/12/2022 11:50

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 30/12/2022 11:30

Excellent. That's clear.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 30/12/2022 11:52

But remember the advice not to discuss the matter with them. They (there are many theys) hate that. After a few repetitions it starts to melt what passes for their brains.

StephanieSuperpowers · 30/12/2022 11:54

Yeah. I'm not keen on getting into it. I've heard the stupid and disingenuous arguments and I don't want to waste my time and energy on pointless rehashing of Twitter.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 30/12/2022 11:57

I have been advised not to discuss that with you.

duc748 · 30/12/2022 12:02

I have never, ever had a candidate for election knock on my door, and it's many years since even a gofer did. That's a great pic with the banner, Kuc. Who'd have thought it'd still be topical... etc etc.

Ginmonkeyagain · 30/12/2022 12:04

I live in a very very safe Labour seat. Not once in 6 years has a candidate (Council or Westminster) bothered to knock on my door.
