Continuation of Thread 1

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions, grr"- that sort of thing).

Maybe we all need a new username. We can all be MadameDefargeSomething.

AutumnCrow · 21/01/2023 20:38

I'm toying with SpartacusDefarge.

MadameDefargetheBoiledbeetleversion · 21/01/2023 20:38

ALL the good versions are taken!

MadameDefargeSuperpowers · 21/01/2023 21:10

Not quite!!

MadameDefargeSuperpowers · 21/01/2023 21:10

Oh, fuckwit!!!!

Place de la Concorde must have been the cause of much gnashing of teeth among mapmakers. Place Loius XV, Place de la Revolution, Place de la Concorde, Place Louis XV again, then Place Louis XVI (which is at least an easy modfication - no need to get a new engraved plate, just give the apprentice a pen), and finally back to Place de la Concorde. All within 40 years.

Having given up New Scientist a while ago, I'd missed these erasures of women.

Pass the knitting needles.

Britinme · 21/01/2023 21:25

Ha ha I could be MadameDefargeinme, which like the original has the benefit of having a double meaning. (For non-USAians ME is the abbreviation for my state).

IcakedefargeIam · 21/01/2023 21:28

I read that Critic article, they're a bunch of fuckwits at New Scientist.

Now I'm impressed with that one.

We've got Marge currently trying to make light of the decapitation signs thread. No one is having it!

IcakedefargeIam · 21/01/2023 21:36

I read that, I was impressed she got a post withdrawn (I didn't see what it said). I have hope if she felt ashamed.

I've never name changed before, but it was too good to resist. Does it suit me? <twirls>

I might change back.

BinturongDefarge · 21/01/2023 21:42

Oh that's very good, cake.

MadameDefargeinme · 21/01/2023 21:48

First time I've tried doing this but I like it!

IcakedefargeIam · 21/01/2023 22:02

Thanks you @BinturongDefarge you too.

I can see it becoming addictive.

I've just looked. Gobsmacked. I am gobsmacked Pie got that removed! It was a joke about the ikea shark photo up thread. Totally ignoring the decapitate Terfs issue.

Totally missed the fact that we get to do gallows humour as it is literally our heads on the block.. He doesn't get to say the sign was down to the individual and then make a joke about a stuffed toy.

I don't think he liked that no-one wanted to be his friend after that.

I can't believe you've never done a Mr Ben and gone in the changing room to try on a different username!! I'm shocked!

But it does suit you. It goes with your dead eyes bloodied neck and knitting needles.

Very early during 2023.

Boiledbeetle · 21/01/2023 22:10

Very early spring 2023

IcakedefargeIam · 21/01/2023 22:15

That's exactly the effect I was aiming for.

MadameGonerilDefarge · 21/01/2023 22:17

Hmm - I hadn't expected that response, but at least I now know how to name-change.

Most vulnerable in society? Anyone who works in healthcare will of course know that shocking stats for early deaths among people with disabilities, not to mention quality of life and dealing with harassment on a daily basis. I do agree with Emily Thornberry on many issues but with that comment she can fck right off*.

And while we are on the subject, how many people who make a virtue of displaying their pronouns have ever tried to learn the most basics of sign language? The deaf community is huge in the UK, around 18% of the population are deaf or hard of hearing, so why not push for more inclusion there?

Yes, and real inclusivity teaching for children could include sign language which would expand all children’s language, what guide dogs for the blind do, how to help someone old or ill n your family, school or in a shop … instead of ‘Are you a Boy or are you a girl?’ confusing nonsense.

Never make a name change joke.

It's only going to go one way

ScrollingLeaves · 21/01/2023 22:25

Sorry for such a non sequitur, I was way behind.

Sorry for such a non sequitur, I was way behind.

You can make it better by showing us your madam defarge name

IcakedefargeIam · 21/01/2023 22:30

Yeah, you know you want to!

MadameDefargetheBoiledbeetleversion · 21/01/2023 22:31

IcakedefargeIam · 21/01/2023 22:30

Yeah, you know you want to!

I reckon you could go for quite a while before a lot of people notice the middle of yours has changed because the brain reads it the same.

IcakedefargeIam · 21/01/2023 22:34

I know, subtlety. Not really my strong point normally.

Madamedefaragelikescrows · 22/01/2023 00:13

Very lazy change here.

Going back to forever ago, I didn't know that 18% of the population are deaf. It makes me all the more determined to learn sign language. It's going very well so far.

I'm off to knit with a crow on my shoulder whispering sweet nothings in my ear.
