Just announced last night - after a three year gap (no doubt partly due to covid pandemic) another conference at UCL in London, organised by UCL Women's Liberation Special Interest Group and WPUK. FiLiA and Southall Black Sisters also involved. Anyone thinking of going? buytickets.at/womansplaceuk/817449

My memory of the 2020 conference is they didn't arrive till after 9.30, because of course these people can't get up early. And they were a pretty small crowd with a variety of silly placards ("There's no 'cis' in team" being one memorable one.) Also, I expect some will be travelling to Glasgow to protest at Posie's rally the next day and won't have the energy to go to both.

Security is always excellent. There are more of us than them

BlueHeelers · 03/02/2023 20:43

Due to the train strike I’m currently in what feels like an endless coach from the West Country. Attending on my own but I expect to see a lot of people I know (vaguely)

Last time at UCL/IoE there were fantastic security, led by the amazing Lianne. The blue haired lot all looked like my undergrads. They were clearly placed behind a barricade and really they were very sweet and completely ineffective.

But given the black-clad antifa/MRAs that have come to make trouble at other women’s events we might need to be more vigilant. But we’ll still be safe and we know how anti- free speech and women’s rights those Black Pampers are. They’re quite despicable really.

I’d advise arriving nearer to 9 than 10, because there will be security checking bags and tickets. And even if it means we’re all stuck in a big queue, those of you a little anxious about TRA protestors might feel safety and solidarity in a crowd!

There is nothing like the energy of 1000 women and girls (and a few men and boys) gathered in a room. It’s going to be such a treat!

BlueHeelers · 03/02/2023 20:45

And Katie, you’ll be fab as usual!

ThisIsMyGCname · 03/02/2023 20:48

I’ve packed the fingerless glove. Although I’m sure we can just say we are radicalised by Mumsnet if we get chatting.

CoffeeRightNow · 03/02/2023 21:56

I don’t have any fingerless gloves, but I will try to drop in ‘radicalised by MN’ to conversation for easy identification 😆

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 03/02/2023 22:23

So excited to be there! Hope to see some of you there too!

Empowermenomore · 03/02/2023 22:47

I’ll be there in spirit. Fingers crossed I can attend some event soon. Really enjoyed Filia Conference.

Enjoy! Women’s Liberation coming!

There’s no ‘cis’ in team

First true thing I’ve heard from a TRA!

spartanrunnergirl · 04/02/2023 08:12

Ohh didn't see this thread already up! I'm on my way and so excited to attend in person finally!

They did a great job of drawing in anyone who didn't know where they were going. Just follow the loud toddlers...

CoffeeRightNow · 04/02/2023 13:53

This is so great! So glad I came. Never been to anything like this before and it’s been bloody brilliant so far.

I also have to thank the TRA pots-and -pans people for showing me where the entrance was 👍

From Keep Prisons Single Sex on Twitter: "A masked man has assaulted a woman at UCL WPUK Conference"

Hope she's ok whoever she is 😢

Stepuptowardsinfinity · 04/02/2023 20:00

I heard that too. By the time I left all the protesters were gone. Security were great .

WhereAreWeNow · 04/02/2023 20:07

Brilliant day. The protesters seemed lost. They were chanting anti-fascist slogans and shouting about genocide. You'd think that they were protesting at a neo-nazi rally, not a feminist conference.

CoffeeRightNow · 04/02/2023 20:22

I left after the closing plenary and walked past the core group of protestors who were waiting at a bus stop near Russell Square. Streams of women were walking past them, obviously from the conference, and there wasn’t a peep out of the kids. The screechy one who was shouting ‘fuck Mumsnet’ and other incomprehensible stuff about TERFs was as quiet as a mouse…

Snailsaresweet · 04/02/2023 20:51

I've just got back home. It was a brilliant day. I was inspired (and moved) by many of the speakers, and also had a really practical session in the afternoon that has given me lots of good ideas about how to get stuff done. I went by myself which meant I was a bit outside my comfort zone, but everyone was so lovely that it didn't really matter. I was also heartened to see how many younger women there were.

Shinyredbicycle · 04/02/2023 21:28

It was a great day - so much sisterhood and solidarity.

Disgusting that Terfasaurus was assaulted and her property destroyed.

Yes it was a brilliant day. What actually happened to Terfasaurus?
