Just announced last night - after a three year gap (no doubt partly due to covid pandemic) another conference at UCL in London, organised by UCL Women's Liberation Special Interest Group and WPUK. FiLiA and Southall Black Sisters also involved. Anyone thinking of going? buytickets.at/womansplaceuk/817449

I went too - it was brilliant. I came home revitalised! All these amazing women.

Met a lovely MNer who said the magical words 'radicalised by Mumsnet' 😂
She was absolutely lovely and so was the person with her--hope you enjoyed the rest of your day!

Now my question is, we have these amazing lanyards, is it sensible to use them at work now 😬

FeinCuroxiVooz · 06/02/2023 09:00

really glad this happened, sorry to hear about the attack.

for those of us who couldn't make it, would any of you who where there
be able to post here your top thing (or things)/annecdotes/bits of advice you heard there?

Snailsaresweet · 06/02/2023 09:29

Hi @FeinCuroxiVooz I've come away inspired by Helen Joyce, whose theme was that it is now time to be "boring". Eg, to look at the the legal protections which we actually have and 'helpfully' question policies which don't conform to those, and which might actually be in conflict with other policies that the organisation actually has, such as safeguarding, and other legalities, such as building regulations. So, not being confrontational, but constructive! I'm sure someone else who was there will be able to explain it better. I also came away inspired by the general feeling that the tide is now turning!

My top thing was that none of us are on our own. There is power in the collective and should be allowed voices. If your university allows multiple trans societies then they should allow multiple feminist societies for example. We aren't a mad, bigoted, fringe minority. We are reason based, compassionate women who have the protective characteristic of GC beliefs. Strength in numbers.

I liked something Akua Reindorf said in the opening plenary
'No debate is over' (or possibly something more eloquent but that was the gist).

Having a job is better than having a winning law suit.

Be Charming rather than confrontational when asking questions in writing about particular areas of law. Ask the questions but follow the procedure if you’re not getting them answered. This was the “go forth and be boring” part.

If you carry a box of chocolate biscuits you will be very popular at the afternoon tea break.

I am another who went on my own. First time at anything like this. What a day! So inspiring. I felt very emotional at several points through the day.

Like PPs, I was heartened to see so many young women - teachers, social workers, PhD candidates, university lecturers.

The intelligence was what struck me most. The calm clarity of Helen Joyce, Akua Reindorf and all panellists and workshop leaders was just brilliant. The clear strategy behind the work of Sex Matters is a thing of beauty.

And the diversity. We may have been 99.9% women, but we were a hundred times more diverse than those bashing pans and calling us fascists.

I wore my lanyard at work today

@Buffypaws Proud of you!
Did anyone comment?

Buffypaws · 07/02/2023 20:23

Nah no one cares… that I know of

ThisIsMyGCname · 07/02/2023 21:37

I wish I wasn’t so scared. Those people outside really rattled me. It wasn’t the young ones, I could sort of forgive them, but I found the older men quite intimidating. And the fact they bought dogs just seemed so…threatening.

Shinyredbicycle · 07/02/2023 21:49

It was frightening - the men were being intimidating. Women and a teenage girl in several of the afternoon workshops were in tears due to the people outside banging on the (basement) windows and hurling abuse at those inside.

Buffypaws · 08/02/2023 13:15

Yeah don’t see why the police couldn’t tell them to get lost tbh. Peaceful protest shouldn’t include banging on windows. I got a photo of one miscreant he is giving me the finger.

Leaving was the worst for me, it felt like running the gauntlet, knowing they were all focused on me and shouting horrible stuff (but had headphones in to block the terrible din). I wanted to ask one of the nice UCL security people to walk me away round the corner but that felt too wimpy.

ThisIsMyGCname · 08/02/2023 13:38

Yes, leaving was the worst for me too. It was dark and we were all going in different directions. I took a circuitous route to make sure I wasn’t followed. All I’d been doing all day was literally educating myself so I should have had no reason for fear. I am interested in is the safeguarding of children and I don’t see why that is a problem.
