Will we die out?

Saw someone tweeting last night that any rally in support of women's rights is a 'sea of grey' and that opposition to trans rights would die out with the older generation. Given that all the terfs I know are older women, is he right? I'm trying to marshall the counter arguments in my head.

I know several young women in their 20s who don’t follow gender beliefs, but it’s more difficult for them to be open about it.

I predict that once this generation of youth grows up, the reality of life, childbirth, marriage and mental load etc kick in there are plenty who will realise how damaging including men into womanhood is. Some are so close, can see the issues, but are still tied up in TWAW politics.

KohlaParasaurus · 15/12/2022 20:22

I was hoping this would be about humans becoming extinct and the planet getting on with sorting itself out😀DH and I enjoy playing with that scenario.

I suspect my great grandchildren will be asking their parents if it's true that people once really believed that humans could change sex. Those of us making a noise at ground level will be written right out of the historical narrative and male politicians will take all the credit for putting an end to that blatant nonsense. And my youngest daughter will be treating her old mother like the Queen because she's afraid that I might unearth the photos of her with blue hair and wearing rainbow dungarees.

JacquelinePot · 15/12/2022 21:14

Something else I'd like to add... the pro-gender folx are their own worst enemies. The more extreme their claims and demands become, the harder it I for "normies" to nod and smile along. They will push the fence-sitters away.

I was watching YouTube earlier and there was a young woman who says she's a lesbian who said that she date's "cis and trans women" but not "cis or trans men" and anyone who has anything to say about that is transphobic. If you date women and don't date "transwomen" you are transphobic.

I think a lot of people hearing that will end up thinking "ok, then. I'm transphobic. And what?". It's such a self-own.

I'm early 30s. Not going extinct for a good few year yet

I am so appreciating this thread!
Like pp, I will be keeping this as an 'open in case of emergency'.

I’m under 40 but yes I do think age & experience changes things.
When I was twenty I barely thought about being a woman. Having children and all the very real biology and misogyny around that changed how I felt about almost everything.

notnowNigella · 16/12/2022 08:59

Older women are silenced and ignored. If our voices aren't silenced and young women actually hear the arguments they often change their made. Getting older, getting married, becoming a mother, realizing how deep misogyny runs, all helps radicalizes women.

notnowNigella · 16/12/2022 09:08

I am Gen X, and I have noticed that it seems to be a lot of Gen X women in particular who were willing to take this fight to the mat. Glinner is also a Gen Xer.

I think we were the generation that believed you could be who you wanted and we didn't have to confirm to stereotypes. We had many gender bending stars as teens such as Annie Lennox, Siouxsie Sioux, Boy George, the New Romantics etc. We also really embrace critical thinking and the tolerance of different viewpoints.

After us the internet and its influence on the next generations from a very young age (especially. Social Media) seems to have created the idea that disagreeing is aggressive. Maybe because online disagreements often quickly escalate to personal attacks and mudslinging.

Young people often think its dangerous and rude to firmly disagree on controversial topics.

MintyFreshOne · 16/12/2022 09:10

People keep predicting the end of conservatives too but forget we all have to grow up (well, most of us anyway) so I wouldn’t worry about it.

Tricyrtis2022 · 16/12/2022 09:10

I recall that a while ago young people thought that using a full stop at the end of a sentence was aggressive. Apparently they were triggered by them.

Yes, I do wonder about that. Many Gen Xers are in (or approaching) that "sweet spot" of having a bit more time due to kids being older, of being more established in careers, of running out of fucks to give, all with a background of gender-bending and proper rebellion and being the last generation to not grow up immersed in social-media-induced conformism.

BlackForestCake · 16/12/2022 10:18

crowing about uterus transplants and artificial wombs, so GC women will die out, no one considers one glaring point.

The glaring point is that it's science fiction.

If quacks ever do manage to implant uteruses into men, the first contingent of patients insane enough to volunteer for it will probably die. The foetuses will almost certainly die.

It just is not happening in our lifetime.

I’m part of this cohort and totally agree with what you both say. I’m genuinely baffled by gender ideology because when we were growing up we could play with or aim to be or study or wear what the hell we wanted without any reference to “gender identity”. As girls we knew we could play with Lego and Meccano - we were given it, for God’s sake!! - and want to be architects or plumbers or engineers…we certainly knew that we could have children AND work.

We were also encouraged to think critically and be accepting of nuance. I agree with what you say above about the Internet and especially SM. I despair at times at what’s happened over the last 20 years. So much good work has come undone.

They’re really not going to cope well with stepping outside the front door, are they? It might be raining. The bus may be late. Perhaps they’ll realise they’ve left something at home. Someone accidentally bumps into them. Their friend is late. The teacher or boss is in a bad mood. Just…daily life.

Tricyrtis2022 · 16/12/2022 15:32

No, they're really not and they seem so fragile. I'd love to see a bit more of a Bob Hoskins vibe than all the wailing about hurt feelings. Hoskins said he got his confidence from his mum, who told him "If somebody doesn't like you, fuck 'em, they've got bad taste." I love that.

Wherediditallgo · 16/12/2022 15:43

Those of us with children, especially those with teens or young adults, will no doubt have been keeping them right about science.
Mine couldn’t see the issues until I explained the far reaching effects - like the woman who was told for 2 years she had mistaken her rape in hospital, or the idea of having a man in charge of a rape crisis centre, or having men sharing cells with women, or children being advised by school where to obtain breast binders without parents knowing etc etc.
Their observation of the trans kids at school was they always seemed unhappy. It would be so much better if we had a resurgence of Goth or New Romantics. Trouble is that girls are expected to have the lon hair, pouty lips and false eyelashes thanks to social media, and if you don’t like any of that then who is your tribe?

Well said. Let’s hope the career choices of girls are not limited by stereotype in the future, and more importantly that’s hope they don’t limit themselves.

I agree. These are the 'Everyone has a flying car and holidays on the moon' pipe dreams of our time.

This thread has just lifted my spirits so much. Living in Scotland, where I'm about to be dehumanised by my own government, it's difficult to keep going. I've had some wonderful responses from my MSPs to my requests that they vote against the GRR (and of course, some who either completely ignored me or patted me on the head and told me it wouldn't happen) but it does feel that this current govt are hell bent on creating a loophole a mile wide, that will have repercussions for all females in Scotland for years, and I fear that it'll take something horrific to change it back. This thread gives me hope that other parts of the UK give a damn about women and children.

Don't worry OP. My teenagers are very firmly GC. I think there will be a new wave of GC young people as it starts to sink in that their right to have safe spaces is eroded...

My younger teen is still very much in “be kind” mode, though if asked about specific issues like males competing in women’s sports thinks it’s not on. My older son told me he’d been reading around it and doesn’t make sense whichever way he looks at it. He can also see the issues that are stacking up but says he can’t discuss it with his peers because it’s such a difficult topic. He says he’s kind and respectful to trans people in his wider circle but he doesn’t believe it at all.

Great post. It really chimed with this Gen Xer.

Agree - especially when many of the well paid roles are in “male” professions like IT and engineering.

I couldn’t agree more with the Gen X descriptions and comments above. When I look at gender ideology, it’s the way people box themselves in by following such rigid categorisation that blows my mind. Why limit yourself in that way? Even non-binary reifies the same categories so that the enbies can wilfully stick their fingers up at it. Just be yourself FGS. The lack of critical thinking is also disappointing. I had no idea there were so many compliant sheep.

WhineyVaginey · 17/12/2022 07:35

I've got a 15 year old baby terf. Dylan "Barbie Pouches" Mulvaney is her current favourite tiktok hate watch.😁
She has massive sympathy for young women dragged into this nonsense.
AGPS not so much.
We're not going anywhere.

Slothtoes · 17/12/2022 14:34

We might die out but so will the people who pretend they can’t tell biological sexes apart or insist that the differences don’t matter.
Kids under secondary age (pre ‘be kind’ stage) all know full well what’s what. That’s never going to change.
