This could be interesting! She’s saying she’s going to stand to force him to talk about the issue.

I wonder if there is a risk that she will be regarded - or portrayed - as just another ‘loony’ candidate of the sort that the party leaders often seem to attract (Lord Buckethead and Count Binface contested Uxbridge against BJ at the last election). Hopefully not.

pattihews · 05/12/2022 20:34

Excellent. Wondering whether here in Wales we need to encourage brave women to stand for a couple of key seats.

I don't think it even matters. It will prompt people to ask questions.

No she won't. Not by all the media anyway. The DM will LOVE this. The Times will too. The DM in particular hates Starmer and this will no doubt be all over it if she goes head to head in any debate with him.

It'll be VERY interesting to see how the BBC deals with her though. I suspect they'll completely ignore her until/unless they arrive at a point where some law requires her to be given air time.

ZeldaFighter · 05/12/2022 20:46

I'm not pleased about this. Why can't she stand against Rishi Sunak for the same reasons? The last 12 years have been of Tory Government, Labour are not responsible for the current mess, they are.

For the good of this country, we need the Tories out and like it or not, Labour are the Opposition party. Not voting for Hillary Clinton let in Donald Trump.

BlackForestCake · 05/12/2022 20:51

Why can't she stand against Rishi Sunak for the same reasons?

Because Sunak will say: “Yes, you are quite right, of course men shouldn't be in women's prisons, I’ll put a stop to this woke nonsense, it's time for common sense, vote Conservative!”

And Starmer will say...?

Nothing will change. At all. Stop hoping in Labour to wake up.

ExiledElsie · 05/12/2022 21:10

I assume that the idea is to force Labour to confront this issue head on, at a general election that they have a chance of winning. We need to get them to step back from self-id before they are in power.

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 05/12/2022 21:10

GENIUS. I love her!

I was slightly regretful that Izzard lost, because I wanted to see Posie stand against him!

But this is even better. I assume it’s very unlikely but still - I hope he loses his seat.

🤞🙏🍀 🧙‍♀️🔮

One thing is puzzling me. We know that a vital layer of the Labour Party’s structure – branch officers and the like – is invested in TRA ideology. People will argue that Starmer needs these people to keep the party running so he has to pander to them.

But Starmer hasn’t exactly been concerned with keeping the old guard left-wing footsoldiers of the party on board.

What kind of hold do the bluehairs have on the party that he can’t just purge them too?

I was interested to note that the NEC has taken over candidate selection from the CLP in Uxbridge (which may or may not be where Johnson stands) & blocked Emma Dent Coad from the long list in Kensington (possibly other interventions too, but so far I’ve only heard about those 2), but did not interfere in Sheffield to impose Izzard…

GiantKitten · 05/12/2022 21:15

Aha.
There are more, of course!

She’s brilliant and incredibly brave.

ReedOfFate · 05/12/2022 21:18

Ha! Starmer is sounding like he’s done some sort of voice change for his speeches recently but I’d love to hear him once KJ starts on him.

Good for her Grin

BirmaBrite · 05/12/2022 21:26

I listened to him (KS) on R4 on the way into work this morning and just thought what a load of flimflam nonsense, the average voter doesn't care about the house of Lords, yes there are issues, yes they need addressing but people are really struggling out there and this isn't a number one priority, making Brexit work made me groan too, we know you can't ever say it was a mistake due to the red now blue wall, but lets not pretend that 'uncertainty' is causing the issues now, its the 'certainty' that is stuffing business ! Who was he pitching to ? not the hard pressed lower earners, not the squeezed middle, not the high earners, and women appear to be largely superfluous to their campaign, so who ?

BrownTableMat · 05/12/2022 21:28

I don’t understand what people think she’ll achieve. Party leaders spend very little time if any canvassing in their own seat and it’s easy for them to ignore the fringe candidates (ie, those without a major party behind them) or we’d have been treated to Boris Johnson being harangued by Mr Buckethead. She’s not going to get more than a few hundred votes at best, and it’s likely that except at the declaration, when strict rules of behaviour apply, she won’t get near him.

UrsulaPandress · 05/12/2022 21:30

I’m sure she will manage something.

BirmaBrite · 05/12/2022 21:39

Never underestimate the difference between what you think people should believe and what people actually believe !

Exactly this, if anything, what she'll achieve will be making the issue seem like a Lord Buckethead issue.

VoleClock · 05/12/2022 21:43

She has achieved quite a lot already and she is a genius at finding ways to get her point across (or encourage her opponenets to make the point for her) - even if she does not get to engage KS in a direct debate I am sure she will come up with some eye catching publicity.

She doesn’t look looney though. She is so bloody attractive and charismatic that a lot of voters would prefer to vote for her anyway whatever her policies are.

GiantKitten · 05/12/2022 21:49

If she gets the message across to the female voters that self ID will be harmful to women - regardless of whether Starmer ignores her - she could have a big impact on his vote!

I never said anywhere what I believe. I was talking about tactics. I don’t think this is a very effective way of presenting her argument. I would say the same of, say, an extreme transactivist who tried the same thing.

BirmaBrite · 05/12/2022 21:54

@BrownTableMat sorry I didn't mean you specifically, I mean't the Labour party you.

Oh well. At least she can't be accused of "platforming with the extreme right" which TRA usually throw about.
Personally, I think it is a very effective way of presenting her argument🤷

bellinisurge · 05/12/2022 22:03

She's articulate and media savvy. Hardly some knobber with a bin on his head . Starmer will have to talk about it. And will have to address the detail not shrug it off with sound bites.
It's always been my fear that this issue will be Labour's Achilles Heel at an election and it will be enough to keep voters away - Labour needs to get the vote out. And this would all be Labour's fault. Everything that follows would be on them.
