I know this may just be my conspiracy-theory spider sense tingling, but....

Stonewall (who seem generally smarter than Mermaids) may have teed this one up with the LGB alliance action, then jumped off sharpish leaving Mermaids to take the fall-out ... on purpose.

The Nolan podcast burned them. They knew if they were to survive they would need a high profile sacrificial lamb.

When the dust settles they can reverse strategy, priorities, whatever. But I reckon all this has been manipulated by them as a damage limitation exercise.

Yes, especially as they did the same with the chambers that Alison took to tribunal. The chambers said they took advice from stonewall.. stonewall said they weren’t legal experts so the chambers should not have listened to them They have form for manipulating stooges….

Apparently this is a recent complaint sent to the Charity Commission:

With the amount of staff employed by the charity commission law of averages dictates that some of those staff have to be on mumsnet.

So to those staff members can you please point the statutory enquiry team in the direction of the many threads on this site about the wrong doings of mermaids over the years.

Thanks in advance

Maya's already tweeted the receipts to the CC: twitter.com/MForstater/status/1598693540816723969

The Charities Commission emailed me a few weeks ago to ask if I had anything further I wanted to add to my 2020 complaint to them. I took full advantage.

Very, very well done

your persistence is inspiring

ReneBumsWombats · 02/12/2022 16:24

So what does this mean for their attempt to get LGBA deregistered as a charity?

Birdsweepsin · 02/12/2022 16:24

DameHelena · 02/12/2022 16:17

But what's happened/is happening with the LGB Alliance thing? Aren't Stonewall going to come out of that badly?

The result is due any day now. But Stonewall are nowhere near it, they were originally named on the action but taken off after a few days.

Chrysanthemum5 · 02/12/2022 16:29

I am trustee for a very small charity, and we have to understand the responsibility of that role. If I were a Mermaids trustee I'd probably be feeling pretty worried right now

hellycat · 02/12/2022 16:31

Susie Green should be in jail for GBH upon a child, not allowed to melt away into some genteel retirement. The sight of her chuckling as she remembered the inverting of her son's prepubescent penis was one of the most fucked up things I have ever seen.

Well if the judgment goes against Mermaids I'd say it was not good for Mermaids. And the investigation makes it harder for the judgment to go against the LGB Alliance...

The problem for Stonewall if the judgment goes against Mermaids is that it gives the LGB Alliance legitimacy...

Mermaids was founded in 1995 and staffed solely by volunteers until 2016 when Green became its first member of staff.

I knew they had existed for far longer that SG was involved but I wonder how this happened? I also wonder how many of the originators of MMs are bloody horrified at what it has become?

I wonder just how bad it had to be for them to actually get off their backsides.

Trustees must be wetting themselves. Being "lied to" by Susie Green cuts no ice. It is their job to make sure they are getting the right information, and TBH the whole thing has been so controversial it's not as though they haven't been aware that there could be something that needs looking into. They've ignored complaints and concerns and just taken Green's word, and that of her supporters for everything, instead of looking into things properly from the beginning.

They are as culpable as hell

Slothtoes · 02/12/2022 16:38

So the regulator opens up its most serious level of investigation and in response the charity posts a ‘We’re Under Attack!’ fundraising notice… Hmm

What do Mermaids want to do, launch a case to get the Charity Commission stripped of its statutory powers?

I was just wondering exactly this. I assume the Charity Commission sent out a press release, and then only the Times and Telegraph picked it up?

It was posted on the government's news webpage.

Can we do a FWR whip-round for a 60-foot-high billboard saying "WE FKING TOLD YOU SO"?

Definitely , but we’re going to need quite a few of them. They need to be placed on the doors of

The House Of Commons
The Tavistock
NSPCC
The Police
Councils
Schools.
The Guardian

I could go on ……

MN are missing a trick. They could do MN branded 'I told you so' and 'Mothers know best' Tshirts.

I would contribute to that crowdfunded. It would be hilarious 😀

A genuine organisation with nothing to hide would say that they are sorry, but their activities are suspended until after the investigation and that they are complying fully with the investigation team.

Mermaids is a trapped rat fighting for its life.

That's dynamite.....love all the receipts in there....

RedToothBrush · 02/12/2022 16:45

Given that attaching yourself as a company to the trans bandwagon was largely PR for many companies, how does this unravel for companies if Mermaids is found to be in serious breech of safeguarding?

Are companies going to be so keen to ask for your pronouns?

ArabellaScott · 02/12/2022 16:46

Wondering if any of these MPs thanked personally by Mermaids will say anything about the investigation. Hoping they wouldn't be so cynical to only support a charity in so far as it furthered their careers:

Exactly and frankly I'm surprised they are allowed to keep operating during the investigation which could take up to 9 months to complete and a further 3 months to publish.

If the trustees had any sense they would be clamping down on everything now because given everything they are facing already, continuing on with activities when there are grave questions about the charities ability to safeguard, after you've been notified about an enquiry is beyond reckless.

And I bet that for all it includes that letter doesn't even scratch the surface of what they've done

Posted this on the other thread but as this seems to be the main one I shall say it here too.

Good. Not a moment too soon.

Thank you to all the women of Mumsnet both past and present who would not let the subject of safeguarding children and young people drop.

Yes indeed.
And thank you to MNHQ and @JustineMumsnet for allowing the discussions, despite considerable opposition.
