Better late than never. Do we have any idea of a timeline of how long the investigation will take? Can grey continue their activities while it's underway?

Investigation can take up to 9 months then another 3 to publish.

Technically they can continue operations whilst the investigation is ongoing, but if you were a trustee and had liability, if you were sensible you'd be very cautious about what activities you persisted in until you'd addressed the concerns of the commission.

BreadInCaptivity · 02/12/2022 21:54

Crowdfunder dates back to 31st October. Its an old campaign that predates Green's departure.

Understood but it's still active regardless.

Interesting they've pulled this narrative from the website but left this standing.

Also the landscape has now changed re: objecting to this now they are facing a statutory investigation.

ResisterRex · 02/12/2022 22:06

That Telegraph article points to a dire mess. If the main complaint against SG is she's not trans, then that would indicate that staff are after more of a Gendered Intelligence kind of setup. They're missing the child safeguarding issues. The reasons for the high turnover don't seem likely to be down to genuine concern for children. This is concerning for example as it shows no self-reflection or analysis of their problems:

"The whistleblower claimed that Mermaids’ forums are “outdated” with 1990s-style forums and “the way it goes about safeguarding, the way it interacts with young people, really needs to be modernised”."

What is specifically wrong with a 1990s style forum? And why don't they address the Discord server story here? What "needs to be modernised" about safeguarding? Sorry were adults in charities overseeing internet forums with kids in the 90s? They were not. What's "1990s" about safeguarding at Mermaids, exactly?

MrsJamin · 02/12/2022 22:06

Bloody hell, so it was the young trans staff that complained about her not being transgender that was one of the main reasons why she left? And now these large children who don't know what sex they are are now basically in charge?! Wow. Good luck to the trustees, you will need it!

Boiledbeetle · 02/12/2022 22:08

MoirasSaggyBundles · 02/12/2022 21:48

we now find ourselves branded “controversial”

Boo fucking hoo. How many women and men making perfectly reasonable, factual and scientific statements about female dignity, safeguarding and biology have been labelled "controversial" by TRAs, a moniker adopted by MSM and which now seems to stick to them like glue, irrespective of the tide turning on gender madness.

Yeah I'm finding it hard to feel any sympathy with the charity suddenly seeming shocked that maybe they are the controversial ones here when the trail of destruction they have caused will ripple through the next 50 60 years as these children go through life.

Plus your user name.....snigggers.😆

ResisterRex · 02/12/2022 22:09

The staff complaints and turnover part of that article:

"Of Mermaids’s ten trustees, half were appointed last summer alone. It is understood that eight out of 44 staff have left in the past two months, half of them transgender and many of them junior managers or officers.

An insider also claimed three out of around five people of colour in the charity have left this year.

The whistleblower claimed: “One of the big issues with Susie was she is incapable of being self-reflective, so when anyone took any complaints to her it would fall on deaf ears because she was unwilling to have anything at fault, even when it was ways of suggesting how handling things could be improved, it would be like you’re attacking her and not attacking Mermaids.
“A lot of junior staff, especially trans ones, were the ones left on the sidelines and almost treated like we were children. Some people had put in complaints. More junior staff, the younger trans people who you’d hope an organisation for trans young people would support, are the ones most dissatisfied at how it’s being run. They were getting treated the worst.”"
However, this is interesting. From a staff perspective, you'd expect to be told why your organisation is engaging in a legal battle:

"Mermaids has also launched the first legal challenge of its kind seeking to strip LGB Alliance, a same-sex group critical of gender ideology, of its charitable statuss_. This left some staff “confused as to why Mermaids was taking it on,” the source said."

ResisterRex · 02/12/2022 22:10

Also from that article, quotes from Nicholson and Cates:

"On Friday night, Miriam Cates, a Tory MP and member of the Commons education committee, told The Telegraph: “It is clear that Mermaids has been responsible for multiple safeguarding breaches - including encouraging children to harm their own bodies - which is why I called in Parliament for a criminal inquiry.

“It is important to let the Commission get on with the investigation, but at the same time, we should urgently consider how Mermaids has for so long been allowed unfettered access to vulnerable children, been funded by taxpayer cash and promoted by celebrities despite multiple warnings from whistleblowers. We must learn lessons from this failure of safeguarding.”
Baroness Nicholson of Winterbourne, a Tory peer, said: “The Charity Commission reports to the House of Commons so the legless Mermaids have no escape. They cannot wriggle out now.”"

RedToothBrush · 02/12/2022 22:11

That fundraiser is interesting in terms of the comment made underneath. Here are a selection:

"All evidence indicates affirmative support of gender variant & trans kids leads to better life outcomes. Mermaids deserves our support since it provides such support in line with international best practice."

"I’m saddened to read how bad things have got for Mermaids. I, as a parent found contact with Mermaids invaluable not just my son and I but my other children too. We went to a residential weekend and we learnt a lot there and it was an amazing weekend. Our trans kids need Mermaids. Please don’t give up."

"I am the parent of a 12 year old trans child. As a parent I am proud of his strength to stand steadfast in this world full of misunderstanding towards his peers and those supporting and guiding him. Attitudes must change and the hate must stop. To all trans children, parents and organisations such as mermaids I stand with you to fight against transphobia."

"Such a shame , that there are so many ignorant people, and shame that people will be too easily swayed by the media ... Even more of a shame , the hateful, spiteful people that control the media ! Hope my donation, along with others , help !"

"Transgender children are being threatened by ignorant or simply evil people and organisations who would rather ignore the science and medical evidence supporting transgender healthcare for children and promote their own bigotry and prejudice. This must be stopped in any and all civilised societies"

"Is there a way to be more vocal in the media? ie, panel discussions, interviews, social media algorithms etc. it just feels like views are so one sided."

This is post Cass Review yet Mermaids aren't pushing the updated advice / concerns going on in this field. Moreso, its worth reminding that the reason Mermaids 'follow the world guidelines' (a concept that is non-existant in its authority) is because Green literally wrote the WPATH stuff despite Mermaids not being medical experts. Yet look at what parents and supporters are saying. They believe Mermaids ARE these experts. I suspect we will start to see this be taken down as a Quackery Scandal at some point due to this gap between Mermaids and what they say to the Court and what their service users were lead to believe... At best they unwittingly mislead them. At best...

Its revealling merely to read these comments.

The fundraiser also seems to have slowed considerably since 25th November.

Birdsweepsin · 02/12/2022 22:13

I have read the Telegraph piece twice now. And I don't think its wrong. Its just incomplete.

The unnamed source, whistle-blower, whatever... maybe they have decided to just hang her out to dry. Everything wrong was Susie. Not the staff, not the trustees.

She was the problem, now she's gone it will all be fine.

Not going to work lads. Not going to work.

RedToothBrush · 02/12/2022 22:14

Going to put this quote from the Telegraph article in bold:

The boss faced a staff backlash over her “incapable” leadership, culminating in a “nail in the coffin” report that trustees received last week.

The internal audit, launched earlier this year by the Social Justice Collective (SJC), a diversity group, is understood to be highly critical of Ms Green’s handling of complaints of racism, safeguarding, the vetting of trustees and her “shoving her head in the sand”.

Boiledbeetle · 02/12/2022 22:17

That telegraph article. Wow. So Susie becomes yet another woman chucked out of her job by the trans gender agenda.

The children are now in charge.

Birdsweepsin · 02/12/2022 22:20

God yes. It's the purity spiral. Ourobouros.

“A scorpion asks a frog to carry him over a river. The frog is afraid of being stung, but the scorpion argues that if it did so, both would sink and the scorpion would drown. The frog then agrees, but midway across the river the scorpion does indeed sting the frog, dooming them both. When asked why, the scorpion points out that this is its nature.”

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 02/12/2022 22:21

uhh. This seems almost tangential to the Charity Commission investigation.

They STILL don’t understand what they were doing wrong, do they? It doesn’t seem like the “Social Justice Collective” was able to explain it. I wonder if any of the trustees get it.

nilsmousehammer · 02/12/2022 22:23

The quoting of inside comments says a great deal more than the commenter probably realised.

But yes, the 'Susie did it and ran away' excuse was inevitable.

Safeguarding and vetting of trustees a damning finding but an obvious one that has been pointed out over and over and over again.

Honestly no.

I think Susie was SO in charge that everyone took her word, or was to cowed to argue, that it never occurred to them that actually THEY were responsible for her behaviour.

RedToothBrush · 02/12/2022 22:25

On Friday night, a Mermaids spokesman confirmed: “Earlier this year Mermaids decided to carry out a frank and honest appraisal of our internal culture and how we measure up in terms of equity, diversity and inclusion.

“As part of this process, we commissioned an independent external report which highlighted a number of significant challenges for us.

“We know we must do better and we are absolutely committed to doing so for our staff and our service users. We will be implementing the report’s recommendations as a priority.”

Wow thats a purity spiral and escalation of behaviour out of step with the real world thats going to crash with reality. They didn't sack Green for mismanagement of safeguarding. They sacked her for not being 'woke' enough!!

Oh the irony. And this does not end well.

And it looks like they are struggling to find a replacement with the right identity right CV.

This is a car crash. Bigger than perhaps I thought.

They aren't trying to throw Green under the bus to save the charity by the look of this!

Boiledbeetle · 02/12/2022 22:25

And liable

EwwSprouts · 02/12/2022 22:27

When the Commission looks into cases of potential breach of trust or duty or other misconduct or mismanagement, it may take account of evidence that trustees have exposed the charity, its assets or its beneficiaries to harm
or undue risk by not following good practice.

Given the beneficiaries of the charity are children and young people the CC cannot in all conscience avoid the treatment pathways and medical evidence, despite the limited phrasing of we will look at the behaviours of trustees.

I feel like I'm rubber necking and there's bodies all over the motorway.

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 02/12/2022 22:32

I can’t keep track of what words we’re allowed to use but i am irresistibly reminded of doomsday, er, sects, who decide when doomsday doesn’t come on cue that they just need to believe harder and be more pure. (Though I sincerely hope doomsday for this organisation arrives more or less on cue.)

and the true horror of that is that the bodies are children.

Boiledbeetle · 02/12/2022 22:33

You know I'm sat here smiling at the irony of Susie Green, the woman who turned her son into a woman, who built mermaids to what it is, losing her job for being the wrong sort of woman.

It's...delicious
