It looks to me as if they're quoting from the organisation's own materials. Very unfair to blame the Guardian for the wording. (And I'm no fan of the Guardian's handling of this issue.)

They didn’t have to use the organisation’s wording. They could have used plain language instead.

There’s never any need to be using language that presents this stuff as just another misunderstood and unfairly marginalised sexual orientation.

No, but BBC Radio 4 did do the rather similar Just a Girl: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b095tvpy

I have a nasty feeling that Susie Green might have had some involvement with that, too, but I could be wrong.

Apologies to BoreOfWhabylon who had already posted about that series up thread.

VestofAbsurdity · 02/12/2022 21:13

In fairness to the bbc they weren't responsible for Butterflies...

They did, however, do the I am Leo documentary on Cbeebies aimed at children 6-12 years old.

I'm presuming MM.

I'd also be wary of chasing too many parallels with KC.

The allegations and the stakes re: MM are set at a much higher bar.

As the letter posted above details, MM have acted contrary to their charter and there is plenty of evidence that their goals as a charity represent a safeguarding risk when set against Cass. Plus the myriad of other concerns over "adult" fundraising, trustees with links to pro-MAP organisations, supplying breast binders etc

KC acted unwisely and lacked appropriate financial controls, but simultaneously also did some good work on the ground and fundamentally the judge found "The judge found that there had been "no dishonesty, bad faith or personal gain on the part of Batmanghelidjh or the trustees ... Nor had there been any inappropriate expenditure on children assisted by the charity".

MM is a whole different kettle of fish....

Thankyou for clearing that up

Norrisville · 02/12/2022 21:17

I'd love to have a T-shirt made with the names of the women who have shouldered the weight of this fight. Anyone know where you can get them? Jo & Maya & Kathleen etc..?

Breaking news BoiledBeetle
Someone has leapt to the defence of Mermaids, none other than Cycling Mum!
Apparently Mermaids was brilliant!
Well that explains how her child hit the cross sex hormones so fast. No doubt they were signposted to Gender GP.

your ding a fine job Fusilli

Seriously the people coming out in support of mermaids is not doing them any favours. Helen Webberly has apparently been tweeting lots of crap to the charity commission. It's times like this where i seriously consider joining Twitter

The involvement is shown here TheBiologyStupid:

Episode 1 Just a Girl: Series 1
Thanks to Susie Green and the parents at Mermaids, a charity offering support to gender variant children, teenagers and their families, and the Tavistock Clinic.

Huh, I was wondering earlier if Mermaids needed a SG mk.II.

I'm sure Emily's mum would do a fine ?!? Job 🙄😁

Fluffymule · 02/12/2022 21:23

I wonder if Girl Guiding is watching and wondering.

IT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN - MEN DON'T DO THINGS LIKE THAT!!!

Not much, they don't . . .

A pp predicted exactly this on one of the threads discussing this - perhaps Boiledbeetle IIRC?

I've just checked I did mention completely sterile just using the basics of the release and no comments but that was what i thought the guardian would do.

But it doesn't surprise me that he tweeted it the way he did, although I'm surprised he tweeted about it at all to be perfectly honest.

Ok I'll try again.

MM have an active crowdfunder. £56k raised, 2 days left to run.

MN won't let me post the link but should be easy enough to find.

I will be getting in touch with crowdfunded to suggest that in light of a statutory enquiry this fundraising is not ethical.

Blurb:

Our staff and volunteers are receiving threats, our funders are being intimidated and our community is under attack from anti-trans activists. We will NOT be bullied. Donate to our fightback fund and stand with us against transphobia.
Since 1995, Mermaids has provided life-saving support to the trans community. We’ve helped thousands in their time of need, and hear all the time how vital our work is.
Despite being one of the most respected and recognised LGBTQIA+ charities in Europe, we now find ourselves branded “controversial” by an anti-trans campaign which seeks to discredit the organisation.
This latest attack has shown us the desperate lengths anti-trans campaigners will go to remove support from the trans community.

We have received hundreds of abusive phone calls. Funders and supporters are being intimidated and other organisations are being pressured to cut ties with Mermaids.
It’s hard to grow up trans, and without us it will be even harder, with many families and young people left rudderless. We cannot let that happen.
This latest attack on Mermaids began in September 2022, sparked by an “investigation” published in The Telegraph where a journalist posed as a 14-year-old in need of support.
In the weeks that followed, we’ve seen a slew of articles with an anti-trans agenda which misrepresent Mermaids and our mission.
Anti-trans campaigners are using social media to coordinate complaints about Mermaids en masse to the Charity Commission and putting pressure on local authorities to remove our resources and services from their websites.
These campaigners have even called on the Prime Minister to support a police enquiry into Mermaids.
This has sparked thousands of abusive and threatening messages, emails and phone calls, leaving us with no option but to close our helpline for several days in October, and reduce our hours going forward.
For almost three decades, Mermaids has been providing support for trans young people and families across the UK.
We’ve grown from a small group of concerned parents around a kitchen table to a leading LGBTQIA+ charity, with supporters including politicians, celebrities, and businesses big and small.

We’ve come a long way from that kitchen table. But visibility is a double-edged sword, and with it comes increased hostility.
Transphobia is nothing new – we’ve spent years fighting it. And we’ve seen this moral panic playbook before, in the 1980s when gay people were portrayed as a menace to society.
Trans people have always been here. We will always be here. We will get through this.
But only if we stand together, and show the bullies that we won’t be silenced, we won’t be intimidated and we won’t back down.

Better late than never. Do we have any idea of a timeline of how long the investigation will take? Can grey continue their activities while it's underway?

In the past few minutes, I've had more quote notifications than Marge gets in a day! I wonder where she is today?

nilsmousehammer · 02/12/2022 21:38

Won't back down from actions of child safeguarding failure that led to an inquiry.

Well that's an interesting position, certainly.

Boiledbeetle · 02/12/2022 21:40

whilst making a cuppa and listening to the epic rant going on in the back alley a thought struck me.

So, can I ask that we all spare a moment to sympathise with those amongst us who are having to spend this evening trying to watch tv and read mumsnet whilst listening to their 25 something, still hasn't left home, my parents are Fucking Terfs children scream into their computers in their bedrooms because life is so unfair and the CC are trans phobic cunts.

Our thoughts are with you, along with the advice that maybe you should raise their rent and change the Wi-Fi password.

Boiled.

Boiledbeetle · 02/12/2022 21:45

@TheBiologyStupid I miss her when she's quiet this like. I am rather fond of her.

MoirasSaggyBundles · 02/12/2022 21:48

we now find ourselves branded “controversial”

Boo fucking hoo. How many women and men making perfectly reasonable, factual and scientific statements about female dignity, safeguarding and biology have been labelled "controversial" by TRAs, a moniker adopted by MSM and which now seems to stick to them like glue, irrespective of the tide turning on gender madness.

Crowdfunder dates back to 31st October. Its an old campaign that predates Green's departure.
