Scottish women's groups hit back after UN official's trans law reform warning - remember their names

Women's groups in Scotland have hit back at an intervention from a UN official who called on the Scottish Government to pause its transgender law reforms.

In a letter co-signed by six feminist organisations, Reem Alsalem was told groups were “surprised and disappointed” by her comments.

The heads of Engender, JustRight Scotland, Scottish Women’s Rights Centre, Scottish Women’s Aid, Amnesty International Scotland and Rape Crisis Scotland, accused Alsalem of failing to speak with human rights or feminist organisations in Scotland before making her intervention.

.
Shocking to know that both the co-ordinating groups of Rape Crisis services and Women's Aid refuges have signed.

That's why I've started a new thread so it doesn't get lost in all the other stories coming out of Scotland.

I can't pretend I'm surprised to see Amnesty International in that list. There seems to be no ending to the amount of rolling over and playing dead these wretched organisations are prepared to do.

JohnsShirt · 30/11/2022 17:49

Rape Crisis, fucking hell.
To think that if me, or my daughter are ever raped we can't seek help from a rape charity is inhumane.

applesandpears33 · 30/11/2022 17:50

I wonder how many of them were represented at the speech yesterday?

littlbrowndog · 30/11/2022 17:55

All funded by Scottish government apart from amnesty Scotland I think. Amnesty are bonkers.

What are their names?

ArabellaScott · 30/11/2022 18:02

I can't find the text of this letter anywhere. Where did they send/ publish it, anyone know?

SquirrelSoShiny · 30/11/2022 18:03

They are an absolute fucking disgrace those organisations.

ArabellaScott · 30/11/2022 18:05

Ah, got it. On Amnesty's blog.

www.amnesty.org.uk/blogs/scottish-human-rights-blog/womens-and-human-rights-organisations-restate-support-gender

'Staff Blog'

'Our blogs are written by Amnesty International staff, volunteers and other interested individuals, to encourage debate around human rights issues. They do not necessarily represent the views of Amnesty International.'

Waitwhat23 · 30/11/2022 18:07

Am unsurprised given that all those organisations are utterly captured. Scottish Women's Aid made their position very clear while England's Women's Aid stands by single sex exemptions. There are no single sex groups available at Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre, which Scottish Rape Crisis seem to have no issues with. Engender...well. Nothing I will say will be polite.

The Scottish Government have ensured that the 'official' mantra of TWAW (for which they were told off by a judge) is mandated by restricting funding unless services are 'inclusive'.

Women are self excluding from the services they need. The Scottish Government do not give a shit.

titchy · 30/11/2022 18:08

Any organisation concerned with VAWG that is 'surprised' when someone points out that women and girls are safer in single sex spaces, and many need them to prevent being retraumatised, has no business continuing to operate.

ZeldaFighter · 30/11/2022 18:09

So are they right? I'm not an expert in providing rape support services. Should we listen?

Not trolling, just a person who wants to support the right course of action.

ArabellaScott · 30/11/2022 18:11

Well, Zelda. Do you want to continue receiving your govt funding from the Scotgov that wholly supports self ID? Or do you not?

I can't find the original thread started by I am Sarah about Brighton Rape Crisis.

www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/4539958-big-update-on-rape-crisis-legal-challenge

There was also an original thread about the male CEO of Edinburgh Rape Crisis but I can't find that either. I bet you can't guess how the CEO identifies.

www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/4471645-mridul-wadwha-and-the-thought-police

The state of rape crisis centres in some areas of this country is really worrying, some women self exclude because they do not offer single sex services.

JanieAllen · 30/11/2022 18:23

the new CEO of Engender came from Amnesty International and wrote the policy about the right of pimps to pimp

JanieAllen · 30/11/2022 18:23

ALL of them as far as I'm considered can get in the sea and stay there. Every single one of them promotes the patriarchy.

You don't have to be an expert surely to realise that some (many?) victims of VAWG are not comfortable in the presence of males?

SueVineer · 30/11/2022 18:34

This is vile - that these organizations using violence against women and girls to obtain funding and status won’t even support basic human rights for women. They really think we are worthless.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 30/11/2022 18:36

I am a rape survivor. Thankfully I am long past needing help but I would not have attended any rape support group where there was a biological male present and would not have engaged with any support offered by a biological male.
Any rape support services that do not support women's right to feel this way and access services accordingly is excluding women who feel like me.
Trans women and men need services too, but they need to be separate.
Very sad. I'm glad I don't live in Scotland.

The Amnesty Scotland lead was outspoken in her defence of Mermaids when the recent controversy broke over the Charity Commission compliance thing.

Do they never stop to wonder if they're maybe not quite right in some of this?!

you don’t need to be an expert on rape support services to recognise that single sex spaces is going to be a user need for large swathes of service users.

Nor to recognise how dreadful it is to tell women who object to males in rape survivor groups that they’re bigots in need of reeducation. Which is the rape crisis Edinburgh (and presumably Scotland) position on the matter.

howmanybicycles · 30/11/2022 18:55

In what sense are these 'women's groups' and if they are busy defending what they see as the rights of people who 'identify as a woman', who is looking after the interests of the vast remaining majority of females discriminated against because of their body and not their identity?

WandaWomblesaurus · 30/11/2022 19:00

What horrors they are.
Fucking horrors.

They could easily provide women only services alongside their trans support etc but no.

Fucking horrors.

The other issue is that there will be no record of the women who have self excluded from their services, of course. So how would they measure the impact?

littlbrowndog · 30/11/2022 19:07

These charity workers in Scotland and these organisations are all inter woven with each other and get money off the Scottish government if they do as they are told
