Nottingham screening of Adult Human Female cancelled

I was at this event today - a screening of the film Adult Human Female made by #realitymatters. The film makers were there along with a couple of the contributors, organised by Nottingham Women for Change.

Originally purchased tickets through Eventbrite, who then told us the event was cancelled a few days ago - it wasn't, they had just decided not to sell tickets for it after some significant TRA lobbying.

We were notified of the venue at 11am this morning, to try and keep it low profile and not attract TRAs in their droves. It was a methodist church in the city. When we got there there were 50+ TRA's there, and they had successfully lobbied the Reverend to change his mind and refuse to screen the film. Apparently, despite neither the Reverend or any of the TRAs actually having watched the film they were convinced it was transphobic and they were all very distressed about it. They didn't look very fucking distressed to me!

We did manage the Q nA session with the filmakers etc, but the whole time the TRAs were outside banging their drums and celebrating their victory. We also had a zoom with Julie Bindell which was good. When we all walked out there were even more of them there and they were mocking us for having wasted our time. I am fucking raging. This was the only screening scheduled outside of London because no one has the guts to show it.

It'll be available to stream from 1st December so please please can you watch it so not everyone's time has been wasted. The lovely organisers did brilliantly in an incredibly difficult situation and should be commended.

Yet again women's views are being silenced and sacrificed for men's.

I saw the news on Twitter. It's amazing how everybody knows what a woman is when they want to silence us. I'll definitely be watching this when it streams.

JacquelinePot · 27/11/2022 16:50

Fucking outrageous. When will this nonsense end?!

AthenaWhite · 27/11/2022 16:50

Bunch of cowards 😞

Thread by Jean Hackett who was also there.

"We are still here. Listening to women and poetry and tales of being cancelled. The vicar is expressing “distress”. He had expected us to leave before now if there was no film. But women have things to say! We have been ordered out by 2-45pm. To this lot who are waiting for us… t.co/RD4hqqX6Dg"

I'm so angry - was intending to go to this but have gone down with covid.

howmanybicycles · 27/11/2022 17:04

Does the vicar expect women to roll over in order to decrease his distress? Or does he actually care about equality in society? These bully-boy tactics or TRAs should be handled better by our criminal justice system.

ArabellaScott · 27/11/2022 17:05

I'm sorry, OP. Will definitely be watching when it's available to stream.

ArabellaScott · 27/11/2022 17:09

Also found this footage moving. Women holding hands & smiling, so very dignified in the face of the hatred from the misogynists.

ArabellaScott · 27/11/2022 17:10

Oh, sorry, that's a different event. I got muddled.

Datun · 27/11/2022 20:34

Telling the public that they mustn't see a film, and succeeding in getting it withdrawn, is guaranteed to make people wonder what the hell it's about.

The press will get hold of it, too. It's just another nail in their own bloody coffin, and they can't see that.

GCAcademic · 27/11/2022 20:37

I wasn’t aware of this film.

Am definitely going to watch it now, when it’s available for streaming, and tell others about it too.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 27/11/2022 20:42

Which film is this? Is it the Standing For Women one or something else?

PomegranateOfPersephone · 27/11/2022 20:47

Maybe a Catholic Church Hall or a Quaker meeting house would be more reliable as a venue.

The first because they don’t subscribe to gender identity ideology and the second because they believe in freedom of speech and apply a rational process to seeking peace between parties which disagree. The Quakers tried to host a debate once before but the gender identity side refused to be in the building at the same time as the heretics. The Quakers went ahead anyway with trying to understand the feelings and needs of both groups.

I’d to see this film but not enough to spend £50 or more on getting to London for a screening.

Rainbowshit · 27/11/2022 20:54

I'm definitely going to make a point of watching it now.

"Read the books they don't want you to, that's where the good stuff is.”

ChateauMargaux · 27/11/2022 20:57

Plesse share streaming details when it becomes available...

Although it's called something like adult human female, I don't think it's the standing for women one. But presumably, that will face exactly the same resistance.

And of course the censorship is alerting a whole range of other people over the freedom of speech aspect.

ExiledElsie · 27/11/2022 22:52

It's not SFW. It will be available online on 1st Dec. Will share details when I have them.

ExiledElsie · 27/11/2022 23:02

Here's the Twitter account to follow.

Watch on Thursday if you can.

ControversialOpening · 27/11/2022 23:03

Who are these people who think they are right to stop people watching a film? Will they be burning books next?

Can they really not see themselves?

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 27/11/2022 23:06

Can we be told which church it was please? It might help the Reverend to hear a wider selection of views?

thenightsky · 27/11/2022 23:14

Is it only available on Twitter?

Datdamndamp · 28/11/2022 00:02

Which events held by trans people for trans people have been picketed by GCs in an attempt to shut them down? Are there any?

Cattenberg · 28/11/2022 00:12

Down with this sort of thing!

I would never have made it to Nottingham to see this film (I live hundreds of miles away), but now I really want to see it when it streams and make up my own mind. Why would protesters go to such lengths to stop women from watching it?

CloudsAndLightDrizzle · 28/11/2022 00:17

Banning a film?

Yeah, that really worked well for "The Life of Brian"!
Totally got ignored after the Christian church and tame councils banned it!

Apollo442 · 28/11/2022 01:10

I was unaware of this film but the cancellation has brought it to my attention. I look forward to its release on 1st December and will share it with others. I hope this makes the papers and brings it to an even wider audience. Thank you TRAs. Keep doing what you're doing, it couldn't be more helpful.
