Nottingham screening of Adult Human Female cancelled

I was at this event today - a screening of the film Adult Human Female made by #realitymatters. The film makers were there along with a couple of the contributors, organised by Nottingham Women for Change.

Originally purchased tickets through Eventbrite, who then told us the event was cancelled a few days ago - it wasn't, they had just decided not to sell tickets for it after some significant TRA lobbying.

We were notified of the venue at 11am this morning, to try and keep it low profile and not attract TRAs in their droves. It was a methodist church in the city. When we got there there were 50+ TRA's there, and they had successfully lobbied the Reverend to change his mind and refuse to screen the film. Apparently, despite neither the Reverend or any of the TRAs actually having watched the film they were convinced it was transphobic and they were all very distressed about it. They didn't look very fucking distressed to me!

We did manage the Q nA session with the filmakers etc, but the whole time the TRAs were outside banging their drums and celebrating their victory. We also had a zoom with Julie Bindell which was good. When we all walked out there were even more of them there and they were mocking us for having wasted our time. I am fucking raging. This was the only screening scheduled outside of London because no one has the guts to show it.

It'll be available to stream from 1st December so please please can you watch it so not everyone's time has been wasted. The lovely organisers did brilliantly in an incredibly difficult situation and should be commended.

Yet again women's views are being silenced and sacrificed for men's.

I bought two tickets through Eventbrite for the London screening.

The person coming with me got freaked out by the fact we needed ID to register when there, and that the venue would only be announced a few hours before the start. I’d spoken to her about how TRAs tried to disrupt such events.

I had a really stressful few days leading up to the event. On the day itself I couldn’t face the thought of being screamed at and intimidated by the inevitable TRAs. I also knew my friend was really anxious about going.

So we didn’t go. I’m still so annoyed and disappointed. I’m sad that I felt not up to handling the intimidation. At least our ticket money went towards the funding of the documentary.

I went to the London one and there were no TRAs shouting and screaming. And even if there were I would have defiantly walked in anyway. Not going is exactly what the TRAs want

I'd never heard of this film, until this thread. I'll be watching it when it comes out now, I think any film or book that someone has tried to ban is worth a look at. Have these people never heard of Life of Brian?

Which film is this? Is it the Standing For Women one or something else?

It was Sherwood Methodist Church, Devon Drive, Nottingham, PaleBlueMoonlight. Not only did the Minister cancel the screening with only half an hour's notice, but we were then instructed to leave the building at around 2 o'clock, despite having booked the church until 4pm. (Apparently they were surprised and distressed that we wished to proceed with the meeting anyway.) Julie Bindel filled in and spoke by Zoom, we had some Q and A sessions/discussions and we all left at about 3pm.

Sorry about that, PaleBlueMoonlight, posted wrong quote! That was for Working itoutasIgo..

I saw this film when it was premiered in London. It's v good and features interviews with women like Jane Clare Jones, Joan Smith, Lucy Masoud, Karen Ingala Smith. It's very factual and straightforward, and I hope it will be widely shared when it is released online this Thursday.

I can only hope the cancellation of it has increased interest in it and made pp more determined to watch it!

The behaviour of the church is very reminiscent of the library cancellation, also in Nottingham iirc. The council made a, somewhat mealy-mouthed, apology in that instance. I have a tiny amount of sympathy for the Minister, but not much. I suspect they weren't prepared for how nasty tras can be, while simultaneously being the most vulnerable.

Even so, I hope there are repercussions.

Red fucking mist rising. I've seen little on this site that's made me angrier in recent months, and that's saying much.

Eventbrite seem beyond redemption. They've summarily banned ticket sales for a number of events that I know of, and all have been on a pretty similar basis. Pity they are so convenient to use and keep track of event bookings. Even so, as an occasional event organizer I'll be ensuring I use an alternative form of booking from here on out.

Churches have effectively got no staff. There would be a part time administrator, and the minister will have several churches he/she is responsible for. The rest will be volunteers.

I can understand they were simply not resourced to deal with it.

Equally I can't see quite why they wouldn't simply sit through it to find out.

I guess someone ended up needing to manage the front door situation.

Now available free from here: adulthumanfemale.info

And Q&A with the filmmakers currently (9.30pm Thu 1 Dec) happening here:

Hulahulahulahoop · 01/12/2022 22:30

Thank you for sharing the link! Enjoyed the Q&A and will watch the film now. Found myself surprisingly and viscerally upset by the pictures upthread of the TRAs with 'all terms are child abusers' placard. I'm a mother and a trained social worker and have never (thanks to my many privileges) faced such hate and vitriol as I know I would from those people for my views thar sex matters, whI have I've so far only tentatively expressed to people irl. It shouldn't be so brave to want to see a film etc (I know that photo was from a different event but the hate remains). What a state of affairs

Hulahulahulahoop · 01/12/2022 22:31

terfs not terms, obviously!
