Aberystwyth University hold Shag Week Sex Positive Event

I'm a mature student at Aberystwyth University and got an email advertising this event this week. On Wednesday, there is a Kink workshop. I'm pretty angry as I think young people, particularly young women, have enough pressure put upon them to have sex already without events that promote violent, fetishistic practices, normalised by online pornography. Surely it's not the university's place to promote such sex practices? I'm happy for the university to do sessions on sex that talk about consent, mutual respect, staying safe and pleasure - women's as well as men's! - but to promote what are often violent and dangerous practices when there is a problem with sexual harassment, sexual abuse and rape in our universities seems wrong.

Younger students have raised their concerns too. And basically were told not to be such prudes.

This is deeply upsetting. I despair.

A university to steer clear of wasting £40,000 on imo.

saltandvinegarsticks · 16/11/2022 13:28

Fucking hell. I went to Aber in the early 90s and somehow managed to have lots of brilliant, fun and happy sex without needing any input from the bloody SU. How sad that it's come to this.

That’s absolutely not what sex positively is about sex positivity is about . It is about 100% about exploring sexuality and desire in a non judgmental way . Consent , enthusiastic consent is central to any sex positive event .

My kink is attractive, non-aggressive, non-egotistical males who are really good at pleasuring women. Can I set up a workshop about this?

I'd settle for attractive(ish), non-aggressive, non-egotistical males who are really good at hoovering and putting the bins out. Maybe then I'd have energy for the pleasuring bit.

coribells · 16/11/2022 13:39

There are loads of submissive men who have this kink

Glad to see this, but so sad they have to be anonymous through fear of being called frigid prudes. It's obviously not about respect and consent at all. I was unsure about sending an email expressing my views on this issue as a mature student, but I definitely shall now in support of these young women!

Sounds like it has been written by a twelve year old who thinks it makes them a big boy/girl to write about sex.
There are lots of things I take issue with but one obvious logical problem with the wording of this is that the author is prescribing what sex 'should' be like.
Erm?!?

Is it painting your clitoris? Or painting with your clitoris?

I signed a petition to make Non-fatal strangulation a stand-alone offence and received this email earlier this week.

Perhaps you should print off some information about this and stick some posters up around the kink workshop venue OP.
Make sure those students who think choking/breathe play/strangulation is fun know that they could end up in prison for five years if they do this.

14 NOV 2022 — Thank you all for signing.
As some of you may be aware 'Non-Fatal Strangulation' became a standalone offence on 7th June 2022.
Between 7th June and August 2022 over 70 perpetrators were charged by CPS Direct with this new offence.
This offence carries up to 5 years in prison. It will save lives.
Thank you to all those who pushed for this. Thank you to Baroness Helen Newlove for taking this to The House of Lords, WE DID IT!!

I was watching Gogglebox the other day, which had a very powerful scene from Hollyoaks ... all about women feeling scared and at threat walking home, and discussion about how it shouldn't be this way. Great, agree. A really powerful message that's starting to be put out there in society ...

Yet at the same time the message is that sex work is empowering, watching porn is normal, the wildest most violent kinks and fetishes should be celebrated.. encouraged

How do people not see the contradictions??

HuntingoftheSnark · 16/11/2022 19:16

@Pebble21uk ah, the Up Top Bop! I was at Aber from 1987 to 1990 and had quite forgotten that. Sorry, not the point of this thread at all but thank you for the reminder.

Pebble21uk · 16/11/2022 20:10

@HuntingoftheSnark I was '88 to '91... so we were probably at some of the same 'bops'!! Happy days! (Sorry, not the point of the the thread I know)

Thank you for that. I might be able to use it in emails to the university and SU.

There was a comment from a man in the US that I read only a couple of days ago. He said schools are turning our daughters into unpaid prostitutes for the boys.

He may not be far wrong.

This.

Sex Quiz:

Question 1: What is a woman?

Well if you are the local labour candidate I spoke to yesterday that answer would be

pauses for dramatic effect

"Well...if a man feels like he's a woman then he's a woman"

Hopefully she hasn't written the quiz!

At this point all the left parties are going to be laughed off my doorstep .

Have a grip on reality yet? No? Buhbye now. Have a lovely day. Wouldn't trust you with a vote if the only other option was a dead ferret.
