Aberystwyth University hold Shag Week Sex Positive Event

I'm a mature student at Aberystwyth University and got an email advertising this event this week. On Wednesday, there is a Kink workshop. I'm pretty angry as I think young people, particularly young women, have enough pressure put upon them to have sex already without events that promote violent, fetishistic practices, normalised by online pornography. Surely it's not the university's place to promote such sex practices? I'm happy for the university to do sessions on sex that talk about consent, mutual respect, staying safe and pleasure - women's as well as men's! - but to promote what are often violent and dangerous practices when there is a problem with sexual harassment, sexual abuse and rape in our universities seems wrong.

My kink is attractive, non-aggressive, non-egotistical males who are really good at pleasuring women. Can I set up a workshop about this?

You definitely should!! Good idea 🥰

Rightsraptor · 15/11/2022 18:32

There was a comment from a man in the US that I read only a couple of days ago. He said schools are turning our daughters into unpaid prostitutes for the boys.

He may not be far wrong.

Clitoral art?
What's wrong with a paintbrush? That sounds like a recipe for thrush!

You weirdo. That's properly odd.

And very niche.

Maybe Funny could have her own special flag MrsTP

Is it painting your clitoris? Or painting with your clitoris?

That's a great plan. With a big vanilla ice cream on it and the words VANILLA IS TASTY TOO. In bold. Probably 'valid' not 'tasty' knowing what sells.

I wouldn't be surprised if they get prosecuted for misleading advertising. Shag week sounds wild doesn't it but Sexual Health Awareness and Guidance Week sounds less so. I wonder if that goes for all the titles and they aren't quite what they sound like. I hope so anyway.

MatureMam · 15/11/2022 21:56

Well, part of the Kink session is by an organisation called Pinky Promise who run classes on stuff like BDSM, Shibari and How to have Threesomes, so that's what it says it is.

Why does someone think that students need to be shown /told that sex is fun? They can work this out for themselves in their own time and their own way, can’t they?

Blister · 15/11/2022 22:20

Talk about women and safe guarding? Nah.
Talk about porn? Woohoo!

Hmm...

nomoreflyingducks · 15/11/2022 22:31

So bloody depressing.

piedbeauty · 15/11/2022 22:37

Christ on a bike. Ash needs to think more about his degree subject and less about sex.

Terrible grammar in the first paragraph too, tut tut.

MangyInseam · 15/11/2022 22:44

It's embarrassing and shallow.

They don't even seem to consider that there might be quite a few students who would find the whole thing really distasteful.

But it's very much in line with my experience of people who get involved in the SU. Pretty shallow people who would never stop to think that not every student saw partying and sex as the main point of university.

Whatever tickets your fancy 😂

LostMyUserName · 16/11/2022 10:28

I don’t mind a bit of clitoris art like this mug on Etsy

nilsmousehammer · 16/11/2022 10:58

I thought mentioning your cliteris these days was an arrestable offence? Or is that only in Scotland?

I remember f* a fresher week as a kind of dirty secret amongst men in the first university term, but it was certainly not anything any decent person would admit to, never mind celebrate.

Feeling quite sorry for young adults who can't figure this out without spoonfeeding. How the fuck are this lot going to ever manage parenting?

I assumed Ash was a woman. I doubt a man would know what cliterati art is considering most of them struggle with a real life clitoris.

motherofthelittlescreamingone · 16/11/2022 11:18

So creepy!

The language is also pressurising. Yes, sex should be enjoyable. But running a campaign that is "sex is fun, everyone should have as much as possible, of all types", is not responsible.

Teach consent, yes (including that it is fine to wait, whether because you want to get to know someone better, or because you want to work out what you want on your own or for any other reason, including not being in the mood or changing your mind). Teach safe sex, yes.

But how many people really need to have sex promoted to them like this? Ultimately, if you need to sit in a seminar about kinks to "inspire" you rather than just discussing what you like or dislike and/or exploring with a respectful partner, things are going a bit wrong, no?

HobnobsChoice · 16/11/2022 11:24

Younger students have raised their concerns too. And basically were told not to be such prudes.

of course they were told this. How dare they have boundaries. Next they’ll be called L
‘phobes and erasers of some kind.

nilsmousehammer · 16/11/2022 11:33

Nah, that's fine. We'll evolve the meaning of 'prude' to 'person capable of respecting boundaries'. Happens all the time, language evolves you know! I've already evolved another word this morning to meaning 'person who likes kittens', it's quite a fun thing to do.

PomegranateOfPersephone · 16/11/2022 11:34

I have never heard of shibari and no I am not going to do an internet search.

This is horrible. The pressures on teenage girls and young women to put themselves at risk and pretend they want what they don’t…

piedbeauty · 16/11/2022 11:36

But would a woman think of SHAG week, @girlmom21?! 🤷🏼‍♀️

Thanks for the info. Yet another one to cross off the list for my DDs.
