Can people like who support this type of thing, please explain, why women must be forced to address known men by female pronouns?

The previous thread disappeared before I managed to read all of it.

Please don't start again on this one, ffs.

You might need to start a new thread asking this question as this thread can also be deleted for being a TAAT (thread about a thread)

(The bloody hoops we have to jump through just to discuss impact on women ffs)

Somehow don’t think this remark was addressed to you but feel free to back away.

Dontaskdontget · 13/11/2022 00:16

This is something that I’ve thought about a lot. That instinctual warning. Because a few years back I was walking home alone and I noticed two men walking towards me on the same side of the street as me. No one else about.

I felt instantly uncomfortable, but then I challenged my thinking. Was I yearning to cross the road away from them because these men were black, in a very white area? That’s racist. Was I judging them on the basis of their clothes, which indicated a different social class to mine? That’s so snobby. Was it just that they were youngish men? That’s so ageist!

While I was thinking about all of this, they mugged me and stole my handbag.

Wish I’d been a lot less worried about hurting the muggers’ feelings and a lot faster at crossing the road and getting away from them.

@Dontaskdontget , I’m sorry that happened to you.

Oh Ganymede should back away.
a bunch of radicalized 2nd Waves mothers are a powerful force; and that's just what TRAs fear

MumOnAMountain · 13/11/2022 00:50

So are we not allowed at all to address the current etiquette dilemma? How sad in these times.

Obviously not important if it affects women deeply🙄

What are you actually on about, I'm a mum with an opinion just like you (presumably) are 😁
I'm not a TRA

MumOnAMountain · 13/11/2022 01:00

If you're not a TRA, then why are you here cheerleading for TRA viewpoints?

ToGanymedeAndTitan · 13/11/2022 01:01

Because women don't have one view as we're all individuals?!

mids2019 · 13/11/2022 01:04

When someone wishes to be 'she' when they are make what is the prime motivation?.If attraction to men makes a man feel they are the wrong sex surely this is just himosexuality? Do men miss the instinct to give birth which is a major characteristics of women? How do men know they are missing breasts or their penis is redundant? I just can't figure out how someone can in some philosophical sense know innately they are the wrong sex because they can identify with all the other qualities of the other sex.

What is the difference between a gay transvestite and a trans woman? Is it that a trans woman has some kind of true insight into womanhood that transcends biology?

I just don't get it :(

MumOnAMountain · 13/11/2022 01:06

I mean, it's quite straightforward. We see a woman, we say "she, her"; we see a man, we say "he, him". It has always worked very well and clearly, all my life.

Also, in my native language, it's just not that simple; so I'm wondering whether you are being racist and/or xenophobic towards me now as well, because English is not my native language.

@ToGanymedeAndTitan yet you derailed the thread, bringing in a poor analogy of racism.

MumOnAMountain · 13/11/2022 01:16

@ToGanymedeAndTitan
Would you care to address my point about your racism and xenophobia in expecting me, as a non-native English speaker, to apply your English rules Stonewall rules, to the grammar and basic of my own native language, please?

Secretusername3 · 13/11/2022 02:36

I was also quite surprised that the thread got deleted. I wanted to know how to handle this in the future as DS has always had trouble with pronouns anyway (delayed language), and basically I don’t want him made to feel bad or punished at school or work, and also concerned about safeguarding.

lennolin · 13/11/2022 02:51

I think the fear over getting it wrong is creating so much tension. I referred to a child as black today and my son straight away said I was racist. I wasn't being but shows kids are so aware and don't want to be racist but is creating a divide as they don't know what to say that's acceptable anymore.

MumOnAMountain · 13/11/2022 03:07

lennolin,

Maybe ask your question on a race forum? Race has no place in discussions on sex as a "what if" or "gotcha".

There are only two sexes. No more, no less. Two distinct sexes.

We're here discussing sex. And whether people should be forced to refer to obvious men as women, and address them as "she/her". Even when he is not present.

Lots of us are saying no; we see a man, our natural use of language is to say "he/him". Why are we being cancelled for discussing in good faith?

elfbeyondtheshelf · 13/11/2022 03:32

MN is a privately owned forum and they can delete threads as they see fit (and their rules, that we all agreed to when we signed up, support this).

You don't get to decide how the site is run. The gall of some posters, seriously.

Laneyy · 13/11/2022 03:40

I'm the OP absolutely gutted I missed the thread. I was sleeping after a long shift. I'm now pondering how our brains work. My brain makes a quick assessment based on their appearance and name. Our language uses pronouns. I haven't encountered this in real life until today and it's actually very difficult to retrain what seems to be a subconscious response.
I will certainly try as I don't want to get fired.

Redebs · 13/11/2022 04:44

@mids2019 Google autogynaephilia for one potential motive behind it. It's an arousing experience for them and forcing others to participate by calling them women is even more so.
Also, for some men it's about asserting themselves over women: making women uncomfortable in single-sex areas, or winning in women's sports.
A few do it to have access to women's spaces in prisons or psychiatric facilities in order to assault women.
Lots of reasons...

I definitely believe this may be a motivation for some. Like there's a person who has a full beard and shaved head. They go round the shopping centre in tiny hot pants barely covering their bum cheeks. They aren't shopping they never buy anything and I've seen them a few times. They seem to love getting a reaction it's like flashing behaviour. Also many MTF wear massive amounts of makeup and tiny skimpy clothes more so than biological females.

OP. I don't blame you for the fear. Pronouns, like articles, are grammar tools we use subconsciously. Unlike proper nouns which our brains learn more through memorization and association, pronouns and articles (an, a, the) are subconscious function words and much more difficult to make exceptions for some uses but not others. It will always be an effort for our brains to make an exception like "they" for a known person or "she" for a known man. It slows down our brain processing and will never be seamless unless that rule is changed for everyone (e.g. "they/them" is used for every known person in the singular and stops being a plural word). While language is always evolving, our brains cannot recognize grammar function rule changes that are exceptions for some people.

I really wish the kids would have talked to a linguist, an editor or an English professor before coming up with the pronoun dictates. It's an unattainable goal, but then so is a sex change.
