Important new initiative for government workers. This is where a huge fight back is going to happen in behind the scenes government, in memos and meetings. If we don't win in the civil service, it doesn't matter how many demos or cases we win, how many twitter threads we write, sooner or later sex differences will be erased. If you work in government/public sector get involved asp.

seen-network.uk/

"We are happy to announce the launch of our new UK cross-government staff network, the Sex Equality and Equity Network.
SEEN is a staff network committed to promoting and supporting sex equality and equity between women and men in our workplaces, and helping all staff to thrive at work and fulfil their potential. The focus of our network is on challenging sex discrimination and upholding rights and protections that relate to sex (including the protections provided to those with the protected characteristics of sex, pregnancy and maternity and sexual orientation, as set out in the Equality Act 2010). We recognise that to achieve this and ensure sex equality and equity sometimes requires treating women and men differently, according to our different rights and needs.

We are also committed to the protected belief (covered by the protected characteristic of religion and belief in the Equality Act 2010) that biological sex is binary and immutable, that biological sex matters for both women and men in our everyday lives, including for our rights and needs in the workplace, and that biological sex must not be conflated with, or replaced by, the concepts of gender or gender identity."

Tallisker · 15/11/2022 09:35

It's like Mermaids and LGBA again. Wah wah wah you're not centring MEEEE

ArabellaScott · 15/11/2022 09:58

Yes. The reaction to SEEN makes the point of why it's needed perfectly. Well done to all involved, and good luck!

FemaleAndLearning · 15/11/2022 10:05

Are there different levels of Yammer? I can't see the SEEN network on my Yammer.

MotherOfDottirs · 15/11/2022 11:03

I’m not one of them but I know some of the women who have set up this group. It’s definitely not a phishing group of genderists; the women have worked with the Cabinet Office to make it happen. The Forstater judgment was key in ensuring that biology realists’ views were able to be seen as “Worthy of respect in a democratic society.” Thanks, Maya, and all who crowdfunded for her Employment Appeal Tribunal.

WrongLife · 15/11/2022 11:23

Is there anything equivalent for police officers and staff do you know? Staff might be able to join this one as they received local government pensions but not sure about officers?

Thank you Maya and those incredible women who set this up.

I'm arm's length organisation which may be why I can't see the Yammer. I did sign up and get an acknowledgement, but nothing more yet.

I think the one being discussed is the Defra yammer, other yammers are available, I'm sure 😁

Borderlinehungry · 15/11/2022 12:18

Shame the People Survey has closed already. There is a lot of bullying, harassment and discrimination on the grounds of belief on show in this thread.

Borderlinehungry · 15/11/2022 12:22

I’d also echo the calls to whistleblow through official channels rather than leak to the media/interest groups. That would be a clear breach of the Civil Service Code imho.

LK1972 · 15/11/2022 12:23

@Borderlinehungry Examples please, otherwise you're lying and slandering women on this thread.

@LK1972 sorry, backwards clumsy phrasing on my part. Trying to say women on this thread have been bullied, harassed and discriminated against, but apparently I’m incoherent with rage and said the opposite. Bollocks.

LK1972 · 15/11/2022 12:36

@Borderlinehungry Sorry, feeling a tad on edge rn due to that ongoing effing yammer thread Wink

Tallisker · 15/11/2022 12:47

If someone were to post, for example, that womanhood is an identity and a state of mind, what would an appropriate response be? And that DSDs prove that sex isn't binary?

Sometimes questions are asked on how institutions have become so captured by gender identity ideology, and now I know. It's because those who influence policy are fully immersed in the ideology and put forward and insist on the women-exclusionary language, they use all the words such as assigned at birth, most oppressed, sex is a spectrum etc and this becomes embedded in the documents, policy, advice given to ministers and directors. Unbe-chuffing-lievable.

Borderlinehungry · 15/11/2022 13:22

I think one appropriate response to that sort of post would be something like

As civil servants, we need to act with impartiality, regardless of our personal beliefs. We also need to be aware that, just as those beliefs, widely held on this yammer thread, are protected under the Equality Act 2010, so are the beliefs that biological sex is binary and immutable, and that biological sex matters, including in the workplace. We need to be cognisant that there is likely to be diversity of belief in our workplace, just as there is diversity of belief in the population we serve, and should be careful to avoid behaviour that may cross the line into bullying, harassment or discrimination against those whose beliefs are different to our own.

Sunseeker100 · 15/11/2022 13:30

I predict that yammer thread will be closed again soon.

Tallisker · 15/11/2022 13:30

That's excellent, Borderline

And it has now been closed again, good guess Sunseeker

Someone is claiming to be left in tears and feeling unsafe at work because of the thread

Quite right, everyone should be copying and pasting that everywhere tbh.

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 15/11/2022 13:44

Interestingly, the biggest push back has been from a man (or at least a male name) and those comments have been liked by mainly male names. Whereas all the gushing "we love all trans people who can do no harm/noone would ever pretend to be trans to harm a cis person" comments and likes on those have been from female names. Says quite a lot that so many of us on this thread (me included) don't feel able to contribute/support/like any of the GC posts

Sunseeker100 · 15/11/2022 13:50

I've not liked or commented on the yammer thread but I did want to in order to show that lone voice that they weren't alone. Unfortunately I feel like I'd be viewed in the same way as a climate change denier, so I take comfort that I've found a place here

Slothtoes · 15/11/2022 13:50

‘Unsafe’ at work. Riiiight. I pity their managers trying to restrain a massive eye roll.

GreenAllOver · 15/11/2022 14:07

I noticed that the balanced and neutral HR Director yammer post (similar wording to what Border said above) was liked by the HR DG - that was positive.

But there are new posts popping up as fast as they close the main ones, it seems that lots of people wish to demonstrate their allyship.
