Important new initiative for government workers. This is where a huge fight back is going to happen in behind the scenes government, in memos and meetings. If we don't win in the civil service, it doesn't matter how many demos or cases we win, how many twitter threads we write, sooner or later sex differences will be erased. If you work in government/public sector get involved asp.

seen-network.uk/

"We are happy to announce the launch of our new UK cross-government staff network, the Sex Equality and Equity Network.
SEEN is a staff network committed to promoting and supporting sex equality and equity between women and men in our workplaces, and helping all staff to thrive at work and fulfil their potential. The focus of our network is on challenging sex discrimination and upholding rights and protections that relate to sex (including the protections provided to those with the protected characteristics of sex, pregnancy and maternity and sexual orientation, as set out in the Equality Act 2010). We recognise that to achieve this and ensure sex equality and equity sometimes requires treating women and men differently, according to our different rights and needs.

We are also committed to the protected belief (covered by the protected characteristic of religion and belief in the Equality Act 2010) that biological sex is binary and immutable, that biological sex matters for both women and men in our everyday lives, including for our rights and needs in the workplace, and that biological sex must not be conflated with, or replaced by, the concepts of gender or gender identity."

I'm with you jelly

jellydaydream · 21/11/2022 00:34

I've changed my mind about SEEN lanyards already. Lanyards shouldn't denote anything in the civil service.

NewLightbulbs · 21/11/2022 00:59

I'm not in the Civil Service, but reading with interest because the Civil Service affects everyone in the country.

I think all Civil Service personnel should be issued with a bland CS laynyard for CS personnel. No rainbows. No political affiliation. You're there to do a job, one hopes, not to do any virtue-signalling.

I really do understand the "if they're doing trans colours, then I'm wearing Suffragette colours".

But when you're at work, you are supposed to treat everyone equally. So No political colours should be allowed. None at all.

Otherwise, all must be allowed.

NewLightbulbs · 21/11/2022 01:06

E.gt. the dentist practice I go to - they all wear their own neutral company brand blue and grey lanyards and no others. This is the correct thing to do.

Risslan · 21/11/2022 09:01

Thanks for highlighting this. I'm in HMRC and have just signed up.

There is one mention of the network on our yammer, in 'Religion and belief activities'. I'd have likes to see it in the diversity theme but it's had 17 reactions of which only one is the sad emoji so possibly listing it under beliefs makes it less likely to get attacked. Also much less traffic 🤔

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 21/11/2022 09:14

As I wear mine. I see people wearing rainbow lanyards at work and I have to consciously repeat in my head "they mean well, they mean well, they mean well....." It can be very hard not to ascribe extra beliefs to people that most of them probably don't share. I can remember when I thought myself that rainbow lanyards were just a nice supportive thing, and that helps.

If it was up to me maybe I'd wear a rainbow lanyard twined round a green purple white lanyard and pinned with a dinosaur badge. And let people make of that what they will Grin

emsyj37 · 21/11/2022 13:19

I've been in the CS for 10 years and have never been 'issued' with a lanyard of any description, I've always had to provide my own. Id agree that we should be provided with neutral ones though - I've seen people around with lanyards that have their area of work printed on them, but sadly I've never been given one.

Maxipaws · 21/11/2022 13:29

I’m HMRC and have been issued with plain ones. I also once had the one issued with the ID card that had ‘HMRC’ printed on but we were told not to wear it in public in case our pass was lost or nicked. I also had one issued to all nominees for particular awards.

I have bought the suffragette colours one from eBay and will be wearing it this week.

Many people in my office wear rainbow lanyards because they are persuaded to be allies and it’s nice to have something colourful to wear and for free! They are well meaning and want to ‘be kind’ and have no idea that some people are pushing an agenda.

beaucorbeau · 21/11/2022 13:34

I've signed up and alerted a few likeminded colleagues (there are more of us than you'd think!). Anyone had an email yet? I'm itching to get involved.

ScrollingLeaves · 21/11/2022 13:46

if you have not seen this on the other board, you might be interested in looking this up to sign it.

Update the Equality Act to make clear the characteristic “sex” is biological sex

The Government must exercise its power under s.23 of the Gender Recognition Act to modify the operation of the Equality Act 2010 by specifying the terms sex, male, female, man & woman, in the operation of that law, mean biological sex and not "sex as modified by a Gender Recognition Certificate"

The Equality Act 2010 covers nine separate protected characteristics, including “Sex” & “Gender Reassignment”. This protects people against sex discrimination and discrimination because a person is transgender.

There has been much confusion about how the Equality Act and GRA interact. This has caused uncertainty and conflict for women, transgender people, and service providers. The GRA includes a provision to amend other laws to make it clear whether a GRC changes the definition of sex for that law.

FemaleAndLearning · 21/11/2022 23:20

Update from the SEEN network. Saying don't fret we will get back to you if you made an enquiry and sorry they can't do police and NHS.

Slothtoes · 22/11/2022 05:42

Haven't RTFT yet, but just wanted to say hooray for this. I worked in the Government Equalities Office when all this started, and attempted to tackle it. Let's just say it didn't do my career any good at all and I am no longer a civil servant!

Ketzele thank you very much for trying. Sorry that your career has suffered as a result. I hope you’re happily working in a much less misogynistic workplace now.

Scientistranswidow · 23/11/2022 11:14

I hope that I am the 100th person to flag up Sex-Matters' petition calling on the Gov to "Update the Equality Act to make clear the characteristic “sex” is biological sex": petition.parliament.uk/petitions/623243
The current number of signatories in 37K. We want to get it to 100K by Christmas.
Let's give it a big push.
Please forward to people who do not know that there is a link between the following: male sex offenders fraudulently ask to be transferred to women's prisons because they pretend to "be" women, the appalling teaching of "gender identity" in schools which seriously confuses vulnerable children, "transitioning" children is child abuse and arguably no adult should attempt to change their body chemically or surgically to match their deluded wish, the loss of single-sex toilets and changing rooms which really affects adolescent girls in schools (and is illegal under Schools Building Regulations), the shameful infiltration of men into women's categories of sports (FINA, UCI and, thankfully, World Rugby has, to its credit, decided that men's bodies crashing into women's bodies will definitely cause a lot of harm - and would bring legal claims for medical harms!), even in medical schools the extremists are trying to get the teachers to teach students the utterly unscientific concept of "gender" in substitution for sex (yes!! gladd.co.uk/activism-conversion-therapy-charter/) and others.
Thank you in advance for soliciting signatures.

ScrollingLeaves · 23/11/2022 13:51

May I please follow up Scientistranswidow · Today 11:14 ‘s post with a plea to also sign the petition to stop the false premise, of ‘gender identity’ being taught in RSE lessons in schools including to very young children?

If the next generation is being brainwashed in plain sight nothing will change.

To sign and share, look up:
Remove references to 'gender identity' from relationships education guidance

Since 2020 the DfE has published guidance for relationships and sex education. This says "Pupils should be taught the facts and the law about sex, sexuality, sexual health and gender identity in an age-appropriate and inclusive way". Gender identity is a social construct, and not recognised in law.

There's no evidence that we're born with a ‘gender identity’, and we do not believe that schools should be teaching children about this concept. We also believe that teaching school children about gender identity is inconsistent with the Education Act (section 406), which prohibits 'political indoctrination'. The Government should remove all references to 'gender identity' from guidance on relationships and sex education.

LK1972 · 28/11/2022 19:36

Anyone else in DEFRA seen a thread on Yammer - message from SEEN network on VAWG, of course the only 2 comments are:

Are transwomen included, 'cos it doesn't look that way?

What about violence in lesbian relationships and how about men scared of other men?

Absolutely fuming, in silent cowardice Sad

Cinker · 28/11/2022 20:50

Not in Defra, but solidarity and bump. Sounds shit, but I bet you’ll not be the only one silently fuming.

dandelionthistle · 28/11/2022 20:58

My Department doesn't have Yammer. Sounds like we might not be missing much. 🥴

Bumblesaurus · 28/11/2022 21:00

Silent cowardice, yes that sums up how I feel. I also wonder if the TRAs and their cheerleaders especially vocal in DEFRA in comparison to other departments?

ZandathePanda · 28/11/2022 21:55

On the face of it DEFRA should be the department most believing in biology and not ideology. I remember watching a production line once where they they were sexing little fluffy chicks. Only took a couple of seconds. Females were placed on a conveyor belt which dropped them into crates for the egg farm. Males were thrown like tennis balls into a big shipping crate to be ground up. Also had a friend who was a turkey inseminator (collected sperm -don’t ask- then shot it up the female). All these activities very much are reality driven.

Tallisker · 29/11/2022 00:33

LK1972 I rolled my eyes at that post this morning, last week it was trans day of remembrance, before that it was trans week of visibility or something. Can't women be a focus for once without trans being shoehorned in?

And yes, given the work Defra does, it's alarming that they think there are more than two sexes 🙄

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 29/11/2022 20:05

I think the DEFRA Yammer started off as an Environment Agency only thing, then it expanded to include the rest of us -the EA people are maybe a bit more Green Party aligned?

The snowflakes woudl all have a field day in my team, one colleague has English as a second language, and frequently uses his and hers randomly, it sometimes takes moment or two to work out who she's speaking about

Slothtoes · 30/11/2022 08:25

Petition signed. Thank you for sharing it. It’s a really good petition summary of the problem by whoever started it. Flowers

Tallisker · 30/11/2022 10:52

Another yammer thread deleted due to inability of people to discuss issues politely, civilly and constructively.

This one was highlighting International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and there were some pretty unprofessional comments against the new network and were reported.

It's going to be an uphill struggle. My union sent a message saying although it was legal to hold gender critical views, expressing them at work was "a grey area" for management. So I no longer have representation if I were to fall foul of the witch hunts, the bullying and the harassment.

Beamur · 30/11/2022 13:04

Although it's unpleasant, the public pushback on this issue is needed for there to be a more reasonable debate.
Policies and more are being imposed in the belief that they're a good thing but many of us are aware of the pitfalls that blindly following this line of 'inclusivity' may bring with it.
