A show on ITV at 8pm tonight that sees male celebrities dressing in drag to be judged by a panel. Hosted by Lorraine Kelly.

More normalising womanface and misogyny on prime time tv for ‘family’ entertainment.

Absolutely.

I’d love to know why Lorraine K is so utterly captured by the ideology. Never had an opinion about her before, now she just astounds me. It can’t be money or fame. Extended mid life crisis ?

NeverOneBiscuit · 05/11/2022 20:54

I’ll hang in with you for a bit 💪

NeverOneBiscuit · 05/11/2022 20:55

George Shelley? I think the word celebrity is doing some heavy lifting here !

LisaPandervump · 05/11/2022 20:57

I’m not watching - I don’t even know who George Shelley is…

Oh ok, here we go. So a gay man feels he can be the real him by dressing as a caricature of a woman. How do those two things connect at all? Massive stereotyping of gay men. So regressive.

NeverOneBiscuit · 05/11/2022 21:06

So. I don’t like shopping, wearing high heels, cooking, and I can be opinionated and stubborn.

On those gender stereotypes do I get to go on King for a Night? I could be Harry Handyman, false beard and six pack, and try and assemble an Ikea bookcase in under 5 minutes.

Is that really any less ridiculous?

Yes I was a bit staggered by that connection as well.

The programme is all about men - all male contestants (no drag kings), male mentors, 3 male judges. Just Lorraine Kelly and Sporty Spice for the women.

Not sure what's up with Lorraine Kelly - suspect she's trying to hang on to her youth by appearing to be open minded and her idea of relevant.

I'm out now.

NeverOneBiscuit · 05/11/2022 21:12

Good point about all males apart from LK and Sporty Spice.

I’m out too. Mr Motivator, red lipstick framed by his moustache and beard, and wearing a corset. My line has been crossed ……

bathbombaholic · 05/11/2022 21:16

@eyebright22 Lorraine Kelly is often a guess judge on Ru Paul's drag race... assuming that's why she's fronting this

NotRightNowNo · 05/11/2022 21:23

How fucking depressing, men doing caricatures of women for prime time entertainment. So shakeperian

Oh that makes sense. I don't watch Drag Race.

LisaPandervump · 05/11/2022 21:26

Lots of whooping and cheering on Twitter, talk of ‘true selves’ and ‘flying flags for LGBTQ’ and anyone that doesn’t like it is a gammon or TERF

OP posts:
WednesdaysChild11 · 05/11/2022 21:27

When are they going to do the other way round? Women dressing up as men for a competition? And why IS it (and always has been the case) that male to female drag is over represented and celebrated whereas female to male drag is virtually non-existent?! 🤔 Genuine question.

LisaPandervump · 05/11/2022 21:30

Because it’s not humiliating to be a man.

OP posts:
WednesdaysChild11 · 05/11/2022 21:31

@LisaPandervump why is it humiliating to be a woman?

LisaPandervump · 05/11/2022 21:33

Well I obviously don’t think it is - but that’s the e pint of this isn’t it? That for a nightly man to dress up in make up and heels is ‘hilarious’ because they’re parodying women

Lottapianos · 05/11/2022 21:35

Sounds totally horrendous, really grim and regressive. Lorraine Kelly is really backing the wrong horse here

FuriousAndFrustrated · 05/11/2022 21:43

I lasted five minutes then had to turn off. Couldn't bear to watch any more.

And I can't believe the love it's getting on Twitter.

It's just vile 😡

bathbombaholic · 05/11/2022 21:48

Drag is nothing to do with misogyny or woman face

Women drag queens do exist- the just don't have them on this show.

Onthecuspofabreakthrough · 05/11/2022 21:50

Are you sure?

LisaPandervump · 05/11/2022 21:53

If it’s nothing to do with misogyny and women do it - what’s the joke about exactly?

OP posts:
bathbombaholic · 05/11/2022 22:05

If you don't get the humour then you don't get it- it's not for everyone.

But drag is also an art. The amount of work that goes into creating a drag queen is epic. And obviously the characters are larger than life which is the opposite from what they were growing up. You'll find a lot of people who do drag found it tough growing up due to their sexuality and being discriminated against/ bullied/ disowned by family or friends and this gives them a chance to have confidence and be someone completely different- who they want to be. Again- you may not get it and that's fine.

But not everything is about misogyny or done to offend women.

yestheyhavethesamedad · 05/11/2022 22:07

Whilst getting ready for work the other day ,the lorraine k show was on in the background , simon gregson said he thought he looked like eddie izzard whilst in drag , lorraine then refered to eddie as "HE" looked like a dear in headlights , then brought eddie back up again this time saying "SHE" , even lorraine doesnt believe what they are saying and knows full well that eddie is male

TheaBrandt · 05/11/2022 22:09

I don’t think anyone is saying that “everything is done to offend women” 🙄 but dressing up
as women to take the piss kind of is…where’s the equivalent women dressing up as sterotyped men in plaid shirts and grunting?

LisaPandervump · 05/11/2022 22:10

Of course I get the humour.

But the fact is without the woman caricaturing there is no joke. Call it art if you like - but please explain to me how the drag without the heels and make up and women parody is still drag? It’s central to the act. It’s what it is.

Plenty of lesbians grew up struggling with their sexuality and being bullied etc - please point me to where they parody men and call it art….
