Supposedly us older folk know nothing about feminism or violence against women:

No. I will not leave her alone. She is holding herself up as an arbiter of modern society and being paid to do so. Her views are open for critique. Indeed, respectful critique.

Respectful critique is not something she i is apparently willing to extend to others. She gets no free pass.

GrrrrAReform · 03/11/2022 11:17

Hit post too soon but on reflection not much else to say. Just save any vitriol for people who are listening to and commissioning this stuff. Not the writers who are trying to finance their precarious London lifestyles with hastily written column inches. If Olivia is really interested in this subject she can do some real research and write another book - I'm sure she'll unearth more substance that will give her a different perspective.

OldCrone · 03/11/2022 11:17

It is an old cliche that a 15-year-old thinks her parents know nothing and are surprised how much they have learnt by the time she is twenty, but in this generation's case, steeped in woke and cancel culture I doubt they will have even begun to grow up by the time they are 30.

That sounds likely in this case. Olivia Petter is nearly 30. In this article it says she was 27 last year.

Even people who write about sex and fashion should be capable of critical thinking. Young women sometimes take writing about sex and fashion seriously. It’s a damn shame if they’re not getting something better than Olivia.

Someone nominate that to Private Eye's Pseuds Corner. And warn them they're going to need a bigger corner.

“Take one look at what the young people around you are watching on TikTok and you’ll see videos with millions of views that reflect contemporary discourse”

Her mistake is to think that the stuff people are talking about on the internet is stuff that really matters in the real world. People get on their high horse about any old thing on social media. Most of the trans rights discussion is or was only happening online until recently. IRL people have more grown up concerns like taking care of their families or paying their bills or whatever.

As an older, mixed race woman who is also a teacher and a mother, the idea of being lectured about race or about feminism by this silly little white girl with little to no experience of the real world is just laughable.

namechange10022002 · 03/11/2022 11:53

Looking at her photo, how old even is she? She doesn’t even look that young, just smug and Sloany.

28 or 29 if the Sun article last year got her age right.

LinkedIn says she was at Millfield School (expensive boarding school, I believe) until 2012 and then did an English degree at Bristol, all of which tallies with being born in 1993 or 1994.

Onthecuspofabreakthrough · 03/11/2022 06:53

That was quite funny - older people (as in, her dad's generation not the Queen's) not knowing about feminism and environmental issues. Where we all so cocky, once?

Yes but no one allowed us to write in the paper.

If we’re going to talk about privilege and all that jazz…..

I know that it’s generally an elite that gravitate to jobs like newspaper columnist etc

to me that class based access to opportunities is very stark

applesandpears33 · 03/11/2022 16:10

It is also likely that privilege shields someone to at least some extent from some of the things that women come across. For example, she would have the money to leave a violent relationship without worrying about how she was going to cover the rent on a new property.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 03/11/2022 16:20

I particularly liked this bit:

”…recently lectured my British baby boomer father about why it’s offensive to deadname a transgender person (that is when you refer to a trans person by the name they used prior to transitioning).”

Patronising (that’s when you talk down to someone, Olivia)

maranella · 03/11/2022 16:31

The author reminds me of my 15-year-old niece, who is very hard work at present. She's cut off her hair, has lots of 'non-binary' friends and likes to lecture the adults in the family on whatever is the latest cultural fad and why we're all bigots and know nothing at all [implication - we need her to 'educate us']. I avoid her as much as possible.

TheMarzipanDildo · 03/11/2022 16:33

“covering everything from LGBT+ rights and sustainability to violence against women and feminism — issues that older generations might not be as well versed in.“

Jesus wept. No sense of history whatsoever. She needs to go listen to some Peggy Seeger IMO.

I’m younger than her so I’m allowed to tell her to go educate herself. Grin

TheKeatingFive · 03/11/2022 16:36

Exactly. Why worry about the vulnerable women who would be most affected by the erosion of sex specific spaces, when you're never going to be one, right?

Throw those losers under the bus as fast as you can. While jumping up and down for the cool points from the woke bros.

Dont forget to congratulate yourself for your lack of bigotry 👏

Angrymum22 · 03/11/2022 16:38

I sometimes wonder whether my generation, Gen X, were a one off generation. Our parents were intolerant of our views and now our children or more likely grandchildren show little tolerance of our views. We seemed to be sandwiched between two generations of explainers.
The World Wide Web and social media have rendered it unnecessary to leave your bedroom to explore the world and experience everything need to develop a healthy view of society. We are too quick to believe without actually forming our own opinion based on real life experience.
I find it incredibly sad that younger generations lack the ability to think critically.

TheMarzipanDildo · 03/11/2022 16:52

“I find it incredibly sad that younger generations lack the ability to think critically.“

See, I think the young can think critically about some things, but not the things likely to get you yelled at by your peers for wrongthink (or that you fear will get you yelled at, but actually wouldn’t because everyone is silently thinking the same thing). Better not to look into it too much in case you end up on the side of the devil.

I reckon young TERFs are pretty quiet about it on the whole. I speak in code when I think I’ve found a fellow TERF-under-25 like I’m part of an underground conspiracy.

EndlessTea · 03/11/2022 18:12

That piece is so cringingly bad, I think it was borderline spiteful to go ahead and publish it. She’s going to have to live with that now.

bellinisurge · 03/11/2022 18:26

@Angrymum22 certainly feels like that sometimes

Yes. I did wonder if the brief was 'write something that will wind all our readers up to the nth degree, for the outrage clicks'.

Also, she will learn. The bitter truth of it won't be apparent to her yet. She's unaware she has a shelf life.

And, if she is in her late 20s, she's not that far off her expiry date.
