Left Wing Men

Who think they are progressive...
Still misogynists whilst calling right wing men out.
I've a few of these on my Facebook. How they love to jump on any post I make about womens rights.

Nauseating. And what makes it even worse is the superiority they feel because they aren't Tories. Massive blind spot really.

as I get older I value courtesy more and more. It makes life better and enables things to get done that wouldn’t happen without it

i’ve previously made a joke along the lines of ‘at least right wing misogynists will open the door for you’

but actually I’m serious. If I have to deal with two men who both think I’m inferior because of my sex, I’ll pick the one who’ll act with a degree of courtesy every time

and in my experience that ain’t the leftie

It's probably more than that, there's likely to be a strong element of 'moral licensing'. Same phenomenon as found in some religious people.

My OH is a ' leftie' he still holds the door for me. As area lot of our other friends. I actually find more right people act more selfish and rude. Totally opposite experience of you.

waterwitch · 28/10/2022 09:21

Don’t think any single political grouping has a monopoly on courtesy, or obviously on misogyny.

Isn't this just the people you know though? Men hold the door for me all the time but I don't know if they are left or right.

Of course.
They are all advocates of women's rights too. We have 3 dds so maybe that helps but I don't recognise what you are saying.
Agree with pp there ate misognists from every walk of life.

WandaWomblesaurus · 28/10/2022 09:30

The men in my family are all lefties too but there's a fair few misogynistic attitudes amongst them.

DH understands the issues now.

After 5 years!

If they are rude / aggressive.

Delete their comments.
Set the post to be viewed excluding them.

People are afraid to speak up, and are happier to do so when they aren't being shouted at.... even virtually.

Echo chamber or stopping them bullying?

Discuss in person......

I put on Facebook that I supported J K Rowling and if that was a problem for people they were welcome to defriend me. A couple of people did but they were only acquaintances. I don't defriend.

oldwomanwhoruns · 28/10/2022 09:33

Absolutely, OH! I have the same rude, sneering attempted put-downs on Facebook from entitled leftie men. All my interactions are about women's rights.

I keep replying with politeness and facts.

I read somewhere - it might even have been here - that right wing men regard women as private property, left wing as public property, and thought that sounded depressingly spot-on.

CaveMum · 28/10/2022 09:52

JK Rowling wrote a great Twitter thread several years ago about the language that was being used by left wing men to describe, then Prime Minister, Theresa May.

Reading it made me sit up and pay attention to what JKR had to say politically and socially.

WandaWomblesaurus · 28/10/2022 10:00

Thank you so much for linking that - I remember reading it at the time and a large penny dropping about some of the behaviour I had started to see online.

See also Billy Bragg.

I'm sad about Billy Bragg. I adored his music when I was younger, it was the soundtrack to my teenage years. I have totally gone off him now.

ArabellaScott · 28/10/2022 10:03

Am I the only one to have heard the thread title sung in the voice of the Pet Shop Boys?

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 28/10/2022 10:09

Well I am now, obviously

In a restaurant
In a left wing town
Call the police there's a madman around

Much good that would do you.

I generally find 'political' people unbearable, whatever their views. Most sensible, intelligent people know there are no simple answers. We must muddle along as best we can. Considering what human beings really are (violent, territorial, irrational, status-obsessed apes), it's a miracle we have any civilization at all. Personally, I'm a skeptical, slightly pessimistic centrist. Any attempt to re-order society according to grand, abstract ideals is doomed. During the 20-century, various dreamers tried to impose Marxism, and 100 million people died as a result.

People who claim to be 'socialists' or 'libertarians,' or whatever, are usually narrow-minded and intolerant. Talking to them is like talking to a religious fundamentalist. They don't think for themselves. They don't need to. They already have all the answers. Thatcher and Corbyn are two sides of the same coin.

You see it online. No matter what the issue, a left-wing person will simply regurgitate the liberal-left position. But it isn't their opinion. It's just what they think they ought to think. Even worse are the people who don't really believe it at all. They just think it's cool to be left-wing.

NotLactoseFree · 28/10/2022 11:00

Oh yes. BIL is a classic example of the category. Overall patronising and annoying, obviously lots of "be kind" "TWAW" stuff. Suggested once that his DD's clothes were inappropriate - she's 22 and working on a bloody cruise ship, completely self supporting too! And then complained that she had made a decision to take the winter off. I pointed out that as he's not supporting her, he doesn't really get to have a say to which he said, with a completely straight face, "But I am supporting her - I sent her £100 last month."

Has lots to say about women's rights but also lots to say about how JKR should "stay out of it". I dread to think what he thinks of female prime ministers - have avoided that conversation!

I don't have any right wing male friends. I used to have lots of left wing friends but when I came out as GC, they woke leftie men came after me screaming twaw. In my opinion, MEN are generally misogynistic. Doesn't matter whether they vote left or right.

That is why I don't have a problem with KJK speaking to anyone who will listen. Left wing men have been hugely disappointing.

teawamutu · 28/10/2022 11:15

They've all read this.

MangyInseam · 28/10/2022 11:23

My experience is that you get shitty men in fairly even numbers on the left and right. It's true that there seems to be this smug moralistic attitude in some left wing men, but tbh it's as common with left wing women.

However, I don't assume men on the right are misogynists, that's really not been my experience, and I used to work in a sector that was dominated by right wing men. My experience was they tended to think that men and women were somewhat different, but most liked women as persons, wished us well, and behaved pretty decently.

And I also think it's a bad idea to make this assumption that any man who isn't in lockstep with your own thinking about women is a misogynist.
