Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Just so down today with the vote in Scotland and my female friends just not engaging or caring

That’s it really. I am trying so hard to explain to my female friends what is going on with gender ideology. They either are too busy to care or don’t want to engage. I just don’t get how they don’t see this as a massive gaslight, women losing their rights and children being harmed. I must sound deranged to them because I am so angry about it all. What are the blockers? Why don’t women care about other women - especially those who are disadvantaged who will suffer most with self id.

Solidarity OP. I'm Scottish, don't live there anymore but heart still there. Hate Sturgeon for this . Have fell oot with long term pals back home over this. They can't see it.Women can be worse than men at overlooking it because it won't ever affect them, in their nice wee life. I was fecking raging today at some wee guy in a Scottish band that are pretty big tweeting about how fucking amazing it all was and how progressive Scotland was . Bastard. Not progressive for the lassies in prison for shoplifting who have put up with sharing spaces with self ID ing sex offenders. But class never figures in Sturgeon's Scotland. I am so angry. I am proud of that SNP Minister resigning though. Ashamed of Labour though .

Oh gosh and *sowing. Reading back my post and cringe at the autocorrects

I find it profoundly depressing that so many bright, intelligent women will not engage. I get a mixture of #nodebate and#bekind. Fundamentally they don’t believe that:
the NHS would offer major operations and hormone treatment based on no evidence
the police would visit normal, law-abiding people for something (not illegal) that they wrote on SM
schools and organisations like the guides wouldn’t take child safeguarding seriously
Men have to be allowed to play in women’s sports teams
etc
There is still quite a lot of trust in authority in this country, and as pp’s have said, where counter narratives are not reported in the media it’s an easy topic to ignore.

waterwitch · 28/10/2022 07:34

Hoping the Scottish vote & attendant publicity will help

Ndd135632 · 28/10/2022 07:35

@Dontsayitsuseless it is soooooooo frustrating when smug men post stuff like that - oh it’s all so progressive and forwards. Have they not computed AT ALL that women are not happy with this and maybe they should dig a bit first as to why that may be before they start gloating all over Twitter. It really makes my head boggle that they feel so confident to go out there and tweet without understanding why the controversy.

The reason I dug in in the first place was to understand what all the fuss was about. That’s when I uncovered the whole bloody mess.

Big respect for the female MP that resigned. Massive disgrace for Nicola Sturgeon who STILL thinks she is the fairest of us all. Fairest bloody handmaiden more like.

I think it helps to think about other political campaigns that you agree with but take no action on. Which for me is pretty much everything else, I have friends who campaign on environmental issues, animal rights and for better treatment of refugees. I agree with them but am quite apathetic really.

For some reason, probably because these is so stupid and such an easy fix (stop pretending anyone can change sex) that it's the one I work on.

I'm aware this doesn't paint me in the best light, but it does give me empathy for the people who have their head in the sand.

Ndd135632 · 28/10/2022 07:55

@lovelyweathertoday yep I get what you are saying. I am also apathetic on climate and I have some good friends who are passionate about it and are active.

The slight difference on this one though is that the majority of people know climate is an issue and so when they campaign on it, we may be apathetic but also we are super congratulatory and grateful that they are doing something on our behalf. On this debate many women look down their noses and think we are bigots for doing this or don’t think it is something to be getting so worried about. It’s so frustrating.

I hear you OP, I feel down this morning after listening to that debate in the Scottish Parliament yesterday. All those MSPs just blindly trotting out their mantras was deeply depressing.

I think the coverage on BBC and Guardian is non existent or terrible. The only places which consistently report are the Times and the Telegraph. They simply have no idea.

It was actually on r4 this morning. I thought everyone was going to ignore it.

with regards to explaining to people - you just need to think what could chime with them. Young women - kicked off single sex teams, male healthcare workers doing smear tests, males in rape centres, males explaining toy kids in school how ‘we’ use tampons,

older women - males wiling your granny’s bottom in a care home, males handling your boobs at a mammogram…

if course your can have a man doing any of these things - but if you can’t ask for a woman - of if you do, can’t guarantee who you will get?

Humobean · 28/10/2022 08:16

I'm appalled this morning and down too. I raised this issue locally at the local elections and the Scottish Greens said they consulted all their local election candidates about my concerns and gave me the party line about downtrodden trans individuals individuals and how it was a human rights issue.

Their trans candidate was on twitter some time later to say the issue was not being raised by voters.

Liars.

Humobean · 28/10/2022 08:17

...I mean I'm heavily into green issues but absolutely cannot vote for them now.

KittenKong · 28/10/2022 08:18

Do the greens even bother about global warming or pollution anymore? Is it all about gender?

Humobean · 28/10/2022 08:23

KittenKong I went for an internal scan for post menopausal bleeding. I wasn't told the scan was transvaginal before the appointment (arranged by phone so now paper documentation), though had worked it out by the time the day came around. The person who called me into the room was female and for some reason I'd expected a female sonographer when I walked in. But it was a male sonographer - who was lovely but it did throw me. I have a history of childhood sexual abuse which I thought I had dealt with but clearly some residual trauma remains.

Grammarnut · 28/10/2022 08:23

TheClogLady
So awful that schools are teaching this rubbish. Were you able to sort out your DS's ideas, or does he still think sex is a social construct? I had a real argument with my DS (in his 40s) and he was sure that TWAW and it's only being nice, but now he no longer believes it (has a prepubescent daughter, as it happens).

Humobean · 28/10/2022 08:24

No paper documentation I meant, not 'now'

JanieAllen · 28/10/2022 08:35

I think this article in the Times gives us hope the Rebellion is a massive pain to Nicola and if it grows could cause the wheels to fall off the bus. She's now totally reliant on the Greens who DO not have any decent Green policies apart from hating on women.

KittenKong · 28/10/2022 09:04

We’re the greens always so bonkers? Weren’t they the party of ‘nuclear power? No thanks! 🌞’?

Ndd135632 · 28/10/2022 09:26

@KittenKong I would love to know the history of how the Scottish Green Party moved from environmental issues to those of removing women and girls safety too. Am sure some good lady from MN will be able to explain.

OP posts:
Ndd135632 · 28/10/2022 09:28

The Scottish Green Party has now even SEPARATED itself from the English and Welsh Greens because of it. So environmental issues no longer unite them! They may as well be called the Scottish Male Rights Party now.

KittenKong · 28/10/2022 09:31

Rainbow party? More bungle (and zippy) than anything else…

Grammarnut · 28/10/2022 10:16

People realise what gender id and allowing men to say they are women and enter women's spaces when it impinges on them or they come across something clear that shows how silly the idea is. I read Alan Byrne's article just as I had been thinking 'yes, sex is a spectrum' and came down to earth with a bump when I was reminded of what is needed for something to be true. Availability of information I could understand was crucial, rather than how intelligent I might be.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/10/2022 10:19

We’re the greens always so bonkers?

E&W Greens not much better. Apparently, from a friend who was there, they spent most of the final voting time at their last conference arguing for drag queens who go into schools to not have to have an enhanced DBS check. And refused to pass a report from an exec member who acknowledged that women didn't feel they can speak.

caroleanboneparte · 28/10/2022 10:20

Not RFT but I think most people are inherently selfish.

And this reflects how they vote.

Most women won't ever go to a refuge. So they won't vote based on that.

Most women won't ever go to prison. So they won't vote based on that.

Most women won't ever compete in competitive sport. So they won't vote for that.

Most women don't have memberships for private gyms with communal changing rooms. So they won't vote for that.

Most women don't think they'll become a crime stat or read crime stats. So they won't vote for that.

I'm not saying these things aren't important but when I speak to non feminist activist women I know they just don't register with these issues. (Even when they are feminist in other ways eg male violence/ equal pay etc)

667TheNeighbourOfTheBeast · 28/10/2022 10:29

I’m so disappointed and worried to see what is happening in Scotland. I had previously been a big fan of Sturgeon. I’m a lifelong socialist and I’m sad that Labour are going the same way. My DD age 19 thinks I’m wrong but is too scared to go into unisex toilets.

JanieAllen · 28/10/2022 10:33

Patrick Harvie hates women with a passion he's the dictionary deflinition of Misogynist. There is more message me.
